Occupational allergy in saffron workers.

Sensitization to the flower of saffron, a plant commonly grown in Spain for commercial purposes, and its clinical significance as an occupational allergen were studied. The prick test and RAST, with saffron pollen, stamen, and pistil extracts, were used to evaluate the cutaneous and specific antibody responses in the studied population. Provocation tests in patients with clinical findings were used to verify the implication of saffron components in these symptoms. Fifty saffron workers were evaluated. Three of them were sensitized to saffron pollen and stamen proteins, giving prick and RAST po

Discriminatory ability of WL Nutrient Agar for yeasts associated with olive environments: a binary scoring and machine learning approach.

Wallerstein Laboratory Nutrient Agar (WLNA) is widely used to differentiate yeast colonies in wine and brewing microbiology, but its discriminatory ability for species associated with table olives and olive oil production environments has never been formally evaluated. We assessed colony features of 227 ascomycetous yeast isolates from these matrices - representing twelve species, predominantly Pichia membranifaciens, P. manshurica, P. kudriavzevii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kluyveromyces marxianus, and Candida boidinii - using a binary scoring scheme applied to thirt

Olive-derived bioactive combinations: synergistic angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition and distinct mechanisms of triterpenic acids and phenolics.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases, largely driven by hypertension, remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition is a well-established therapeutic approach; however, synthetic inhibitors are frequently associated with adverse effects. Natural bioactive compounds, particularly those derived from olives, have been proposed as potential alternatives or complementary agents. RESULTS: This study evaluated the ACE-inhibitory potential of olive-derived triterpenic acids (oleanolic acid (OA) and maslinic acid (MA)) and phenolic compounds (hydroxyt

Tapping into haloalkaliphilic bacteria for sustainable agriculture in treated wastewater: insights into genomic fitness and environmental adaptation.

The increasing salinity and alkalinity of soils pose a global challenge, particularly in arid regions such as Tunisia, where about 50% of lands are sensitive to soil salinization. Anthropogenic activities, including the use of treated wastewater (TWW) for irrigation, exacerbate these issues. Haloalkaliphilic bacteria, adapted to TWW conditions and exhibiting plant-growth promotion (PGP) and biocontrol traits, could offer solutions. In this study, 24 haloalkaliphilic bacterial strains were isolated from rhizosphere sample of olive tree irrigated with TWW for more than 20 years. The bacterial id

CuO coated olive cake nanocomposites for rapid phenol removal and effective discoloration of high strength olive mill wastewater.

The potential of solid olive wastes-based adsorbent (CuO-OC) with photocatalytic power was established for the removal of total phenolics and photocatalytic discolourization of high strength olive mill wastewater (OMW). Clear insight of the FTIR and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses showed that oxygen-containing functional groups of CuO-OC likely participated in the adsorption of total phenols from the OMW via a π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. Also, the total pore volume of CuO-OC decreased from 0.068 to 0.052 cm3 g-1 after adsorption, which suggested that phenol

First Report of Knot Disease Caused by Pseudomonas savastanoi on Sweet Olive in Central Italy.

In April 2012 the presence of hyperplastic outgrowths on trunks, branches, and twigs of sweet olive plants, Osmanthus fragrans Lour (Fam. Oleaceae), was recorded in two ornamental hedges made up of five and four plants, respectively, in the city center of Montecatini (Pistoia-Italy). All sweet olive plants were seriously affected by the disease with outgrowths appearing either singly or close together, often forming a single mass that could extend up to 20 cm along the stems, occasionally surrounding the entire circumference. The symptoms observed on O. fragrans closely resembled those induced

Rational modification of olive derived 4-ethylguaiacol into a BBB-permeable acetylcholinesterase inhibitor via molecular docking, DFT, and molecular dynamics: a computational approach to alzheimer's drug discovery.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects more than 55 million people worldwide, yet no disease-modifying therapy has been approved. Here, 23 phytochemicals from Olea europaea (olive) were evaluated using a multi-filter pipeline comprising ADME/drug-likeness screening, BBB permeability assessment, molecular docking, DFT analysis, and MD simulations. This is the first computational study of olive phytochemicals targeting AChE to use BBB permeability as an explicit screening filter, addressing the CNS penetrance gap that limits translation of prior in silico hits. ADME screening (through SwissADME) ident

Nano-Functionalized Biopolymer Films with Green-Synthesized CuO/Attapulgite for Light-Promoted Antibacterial Therapy and Wound Healing.

The rapid emergence of drug-resistant bacterial infections poses a significant global challenge to wound management, necessitating the development of alternative antibacterial strategies beyond conventional antibiotics. Herein, a plant-mediated green synthesis approach is employed for fabricating visible-light-responsive copper oxide/attapulgite (CuO/APT) nanocomposites using Olea europaea leaf extract. The one-dimensional APT serves as an effective biological template to promote heterogeneous nucleation and stabilization of ultrafine CuO nanoparticles (5-20 nm) with enhanced visible-light cat

Oleuropein attenuates testicular ischemia-reperfusion by inhibiting apoptosis and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is the key reason of injury after testicular torsion and may eventually lead to male infertility. Oleuropein, a natural antioxidant isolated from Olea europaea, has shown beneficial effects in different models of ischemia. We evaluated the effects of oleuropein on testicular IRI and explored the underlying protective mechanisms. METHODS: A mouse testicular torsion/detorsion (T/D) model and an oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) germ cell model were established and treated with oleuropein. H&E staining was used to evaluate testicular pat

Diosmetin attenuates fibromyalgia-like symptoms in a reserpine-induced model in mice.

Fibromyalgia is a potentially disabling idiopathic disease characterized by widespread chronic pain associated with comorbidities such as fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Current therapeutic approaches present adverse effects that limit adherence to therapy. Diosmetin, an aglycone of the flavonoid glycoside diosmin found in citrus fruits and the leaves of Olea europaea L., has antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Here, we investigated the effect of diosmetin on nociceptive behaviors and comorbidities in an experimental fibromyalgia model induced by reserpine in mice

Unraveling fungal community biodiversity in table olives through tree-based machine learning classification.

In recent years, the number of omics studies aimed at characterizing fungal communities in fermented foods, such as table olives, has steadily increased. Moreover, advances in bioinformatics and artificial intelligence have provided new resources for analysing these datasets. Among these tools, supervised machine learning (ML) models, particularly tree-based algorithms, are especially valuable for their interpretability and their ability to identify underlying patterns. In this study, we evaluated three target variables of table olive samples (processing type, country of origin, and olive cult

Establishment of a rapid, inexpensive protocol for extraction of high quality RNA from small amounts of strawberry plant tissues and other recalcitrant fruit crops.

Strawberry plant tissues and particularly fruit material are rich in polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds, thus rendering the isolation of nucleic acids a difficult task. This work describes the successful modification of a total RNA extraction protocol, which enables the isolation of high quantity and quality of total RNA from small amounts of strawberry leaf, root and fruit tissues. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) amplification of GAPDH housekeeping gene from isolated RNA further supports the proposed protocol efficiency and its use for downstream molecular app

Mineral content and sensory characteristics of Gordal green table olives fermented in chloride salt mixtures.

UNLABELLED: This work studies the effects of the initial brine concentrations of NaCl, KCl, and CaCl(2) on the mineral content and gustatory and kinaesthetic sensations of fermented green table olives, using a simplex centroid mixture design augmented with interior points. The sodium in the flesh was linearly related to the mixture concentrations while potassium and calcium were linked by quadratic and special cubic models respectively. Acidity, saltiness, hardness, fibrousness, and crunchiness were expressed as linear funtions of the NaCl, KCl, and CaCl(2) initial brine contents but bitternes

Two cases of food-borne botulism in Finland caused by conserved olives, October 2011.

In October 2011 in Finland, two persons fell ill with symptoms compatible with botulism after having eaten conserved olives stuffed with almonds. One of these two died. Clostridium botulinum type B and its neurotoxin were detected in the implicated olives by PCR and mouse bioassay, respectively. The olives were traced back to an Italian manufacturer and withdrawn from the market. The public and other European countries were informed through media and Europe-wide notifications.
