Clinical and histologic comparison of two different composite grafts for sinus augmentation: a pilot clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sinus augmentation is a procedure used for augmenting insufficient bone height that is often observed in the maxillary posterior areas. Many different techniques as well as bone graft regimens have been suggested for performing this procedure. It was the goal of this study to compare, clinically and histologically, two different composite grafting regimens used for sinus augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five patients, needing a bilateral sinus augmentation to allow implant placement, were recruited for this study. Right sinuses were grafted with cortical bone (co

Use of reciprocating saw for alveolar ridge reduction in the anterior mandible for immediate load implant-supported hybrid dentures.

PURPOSE: Alveolar ridge reduction, which is needed to create sufficient room for abutments, metal framework, and acrylic teeth, and a flat bone platform using commonly used burs is a time-consuming procedure and may cause discomfort to the patient. The aim of this study was to describe an alternative technique to fabricate a mandibular hybrid denture in 4 days without making any final impression and to describe the use of a reciprocating saw for alveolar ridge reduction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients aged 45 to 75 years were considered for this study. Each patient received 5 implants for

Randomized study evaluating recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 for extraction socket augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Conventional dentoalveolar osseous reconstruction often involves the use of grafting materials with or without barrier membranes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of bone induction for the placement of dental implants by two concentrations of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) delivered on a bioabsorbable collagen sponge (ACS) compared to placebo (ACS alone) and no treatment in a human buccal wall defect model following tooth extraction. METHODS: Eighty patients requiring local alveolar ridge augmentation for buccal wall defects (> or =5

Oral rehabilitation of adult twins with severe lack of bone due to hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia--a 12-month follow-up.

PURPOSE: Patients with x-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED, OMIM 305100) often present with exceptional oral conditions, because alveolar ridges can remain severely hypotrophic due to oligo- or anodontia in the primary and/or permanent dentition. This can seriously disable a young person physically and psychologically, and lead to sociopsychological isolation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The oral rehabilitation of fraternal male twins with XLHED, one with severe hypodontia and the other with anodontia is described. The treatment of both patients comprised augmentation of the jaws usin

A new method to eliminate the risk of maxillary sinusitis with zygomatic implants.

PURPOSE: A new approach for zygomatic implant placement was proposed to eliminate the risk of maxillary sinusitis related to the procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of this new approach was conducted, and consecutive patients treated between June 2007 and December 2008 were included. An extended sinus lift with retained bone window was performed, such that zygomatic implants were placed completely outside the displaced maxillary sinuses. All patients were followed up radiologically at regular intervals using cone beam computed tomography to evaluate the status of the zygomat

Optimization in multi-implant placement for immediate loading in edentulous arches using a modified surgical template and prototyping: a case report.

Immediate loading of dental implants shortens the treatment time and makes it possible to give the patient an esthetic appearance throughout the treatment period. Placement of dental implants requires precise planning that accounts for anatomic limitations and restorative goals. Diagnosis can be made with the assistance of computerized tomographic scanning, but transfer of planning to the surgical field is limited. Recently, novel CAD/CAM techniques such as stereolithographic rapid prototyping have been developed to build surgical guides in an attempt to improve precision of implant placement.

The prosthetic rehabilitation of a panfacial fracture patient after reduction: a clinical report.

Panfacial fractures involve trauma to the lower, middle, and upper facial bones and often require a team approach for management. Early and complete restoration of preinjury facial contours and function should be the goal of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. When the intraoral landmarks are lost, overall facial anatomic landmarks can be used to restore the oral cavity. A patient with complex clinical panfacial fractures, including a vertically and horizontally malpositioned native alveolar bone and severe facial asymmetry, is presented. A functional and esthetic rehabi

Medication related osteonecrosis (MRONJ) in the management of CTIBL in breast and prostate cancer patients. Joint report by SIPMO AND SIOMMMS.

BACKGROUND: Low-doses of bone modifying agents (LD-BMAs) compared to those used to treat bone metastases are used in breast or prostate cancer patients on adjuvant endocrine therapy to prevent Cancer Treatment Induced Bone Loss (CTIBL). Their use is associated with an increased risk of developing Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ). However, there is not clarity about strategies aimed to minimize the MRONJ risk in cancer patients at different conditions as low- vs high-doses of BMA. This joint report from the Italian Societies of Oral Pathology and Medicine (SIPMO) and of Itali
