Molecular Mechanisms of Action of Selected Substances Involved in the Reduction of Benzo[a]pyrene-Induced Oxidative Stress.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) primarily formed by burning of fossil fuels, wood and other organic materials. BaP as group I carcinogen shows mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. One of the important mechanisms of action of (BaP) is its free radical activity, the effect of which is the induction of oxidative stress in cells. BaP induces oxidative stress through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), disturbances of the activity of antioxidant enzymes, and the reduction of the level of non-enzymatic antioxidants as well as of cytokine production. Chemic

Photo-induced reduction of vanadium in vanadium-containing iron/manganese oxide agglomerates by oxalic acid.

The stockpiling of vanadium-containing tailings allows vanadium to migrate into the surrounding area, resulting in toxic metal contamination. By using the vanadium-bearing iron/manganese (Fe/Mn) oxide agglomerates as the simulated tailings, the feasibility of photo-induced reduction of vanadium by oxalic acid was investigated. Batch effects of the available light and the reducing agents on agglomerates were investigated. Results showed that oxalic acid (5 mmol L-1) can convert V(V) to V(IV) and convert Fe(III) released from the Fe/Mn oxide agglomerates to Fe(II) under both light and dark condi

Solvation and Mobilization of Copper Active Sites in Zeolites by Ammonia: Consequences for the Catalytic Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides.

ConspectusCopper-exchanged chabazite (Cu-CHA) zeolites are catalysts used in diesel emissions control for the abatement of nitrogen oxides (NOx) via selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions with ammonia as the reductant. The discovery of these materials in the early 2010s enabled a step-change improvement in diesel emissions aftertreatment technology. Key advantages of Cu-CHA zeolites over prior materials include their effectiveness at the lower temperatures characteristic of diesel exhaust, their durability under high-temperature hydrothermal conditions, and their resistance to poisoning

Reduction and stabilization of Cr(VI) in soil by using calcium polysulfide: Catalysis of natural iron oxides.

Cr(VI)-contaminated soils could be remediated by using calcium polysulfide (CPS), while natural iron oxides as a main composition of soil would influence the pathways of the remediation. Through kinetic batch tests, the kinetics of Cr(VI) removal from soil, the effects of the contents of natural iron oxides, soil environmental conditions and mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal by using CPS with the presence of natural iron oxides were investigated. The results show that the removal of Cr(VI) by using CPS in soil fitted the pseudo-second-order model best, and the appearance of goethite increased the a

Oxaloacetate Ameliorates Chemical Liver Injury via Oxidative Stress Reduction and Enhancement of Bioenergetic Fluxes.

Chemical injury is partly due to free radical lipid peroxidation, which can induce oxidative stress and produce a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxaloacetic acid is an important intermediary in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) and participates in metabolism and energy production. In our study, we found that oxaloacetate (OA) effectively alleviated liver injury which was induced by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in vitro and carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) in vivo. OA scavenged ROS, prevented oxidative damage and maintained the normal structure of mitochondria. We further confirme

Synthesis of a "Masked" Terminal Nickel(II) Sulfide by Reductive Deprotection and its Reaction with Nitrous Oxide.

The addition of 1 equiv of KSCPh3 to [L(R)NiCl] (L(R) = {(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(R)}2CH; R = Me, tBu) in C6H6 results in the formation of [L(R)Ni(SCPh3)] (1: R = Me; 2: R = tBu) in good yields. Subsequent reduction of 1 and 2 with 2 equiv of KC8 in cold (-25 °C) Et2O in the presence of 2 equiv of 18-crown-6 results in the formation of "masked" terminal Ni(II) sulfides, [K(18-crown-6)][L(R)Ni(S)] (3: R = Me; 4: R = tBu), also in good yields. An X-ray crystallographic analysis of these complexes suggests that they feature partial multiple-bond character in their Ni-S linkages. Addition of N2O to a tolu

Mercury (II) reduction and co-precipitation of metallic mercury on hydrous ferric oxide in contaminated groundwater.

Mercury (Hg) speciation and sorption analyses in contaminated aquifers are useful for understanding transformation, retention, and mobility of Hg in groundwater. In most aquifers hydrous ferric oxides (HFOs) are among the most important sorbents for trace metals; however, their role in sorption or mobilization of Hg in aquifers has been rarely analyzed. In this study, we investigated Hg chemistry and Hg sorption to HFO under changing redox conditions in a highly HgCl2-contaminated aquifer (up to 870μgL(-1) Hg). Results from aqueous and solid phase Hg measurements were compared to modeled (PHRE

Cardioprotective effects of thyroid hormones in a rat model of myocardial infarction are associated with oxidative stress reduction.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved with progression from infarction to heart failure. Studies show that thyroid hormones (TH) present cardioprotective effects. This study aims to evaluate whether TH effects after infarction are associated to redox balance modulation. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Sham-operated (SHAM), infarcted (AMI), sham-operated+TH (SHAMT), and infarcted+TH (AMIT). During 26 days, animals received T3 (2 μg/100g/day) and T4 (8 μg/100g/day) by gavage. Echocardiographic parameters were assessed and heart tissue was collected to biochemical analysis. A

Reduction of dopaminergic degeneration and oxidative stress by inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme in a MPTP model of parkinsonism.

There is growing evidence indicating that oxidative stress is a key contributor to the pathogenesis and progression of Parkinson's disease. The brain, and particularly the basal ganglia, possesses a local rennin-angiotensin system. Angiotensin activates NAD(P)H-dependent oxidases, which are a major intracellular source of superoxide, and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) have shown antioxidant properties. We treated mice with MPTP and the ACEI captopril to study the possible neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of the latter on the dopaminergic system. Pre-treatment with capt

Effect of sulfur compounds on biological reduction of nitric oxide in aqueous Fe(II)EDTA2- solutions.

Biological reduction of nitric oxide (NO) in aqueous solutions of EDTA chelated Fe(II) is one of the main steps in the BioDeNOx process, a novel bioprocess for the removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from polluted gas streams. Since NOx contaminated gases usually also contain sulfurous pollutants, the possible interferences of these sulfur compounds with the BioDeNOx process need to be identified. Therefore, the effect of the sulfur compounds Na2SO4, Na2SO3, and H2S on the biological NO reduction in aqueous solutions of Fe(II)EDTA2- (25 mM, pH 7.2, 55 degrees C) was studied in batch experiments.

Elevated oxidative stress and reciprocal reduction of vascular endothelial growth factor levels with severity of COPD.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The prevalent theory concerning the pathogenesis of COPD is that it is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. However, it has been reported that a decrease in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) might affect the pathogenesis of COPD. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the differences between oxidative stress and VEGF levels, and the severity of COPD. DESIGN: Controlled cross-sectional analysis. SETTING: University hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve healthy control subjects and 57 COPD patients were included in this study. These COPD patients were divi

Comparisons of oxidative metabolism and reductive capacity in sulfonamide-tolerant and -intolerant patients with human immunodeficiency virus.

Hypersensitivity reactions to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole occur with a high frequency in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. This study tested whether differences in oxidative metabolism and plasma reductive capacity correlate with sulfonamide intolerance in patients with HIV. Eighteen stable outpatients with HIV were prospectively studied. Nine patients had documented histories of hypersensitivity reactions to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and nine did not. Urinary caffeine metabolite ratios assessed the activity of two oxidative enzymatic pathways: cytochrome P-450 1A2 (d

From Oxidative to Reductive Stress: Metal-Dependent Mechanisms of Cancer Cell Death in Troxerutin Complexes.

Flavonoid-oxidovanadium(IV) (VO) complexes have been widely investigated as anticancer agents because of their ability to induce oxidative stress in tumor cells. In contrast, Zn complexes with ligands capable of reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) may exert antitumor effects through a reductive-stress mechanism. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a Zn-troxerutin complex, its interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA), and its anticancer activity. This study aims to correlate the chemical and biological properties of the complex after replacing a redox-act

Ascorbic acid (AA) or vitamin C is an important biomolecule that plays a crucial role in biological and physiological systems. Deficiency and/or excess of AA in the body can lead to severe diseases such as scurvy and gastrointestinal complications. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor the levels of AA in the body and supplements. Polyvinylpyrrolidone nickel oxide nanoparticles (PVP-NiONPs) are prepared and evaluated for their potential as nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity. o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) was used as a chromogen in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The oxidized OPD was produced

Resistance exercise alleviates overactive bladder by attenuating detrusor oxidative stress via peroxynitrite reduction.

Overactive bladder (OAB) remains challenging to treat due to drug intolerance and limited efficacy of behavioral therapies. The mechanistic basis by which exercise improves bladder function is poorly understood. Here, we established a clinically translatable resistance exercise model using graded treadmill loading (5-15% body weight [BW], 10-30 min/day) in a cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced OAB rat model to identify the optimal therapeutic intensity and delineate redox-related mechanisms. Effects of Annealing Conditions on the Catalytic Performance of Anodized Tin Oxide for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction.

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to value-added products has garnered significant interest as a sustainable solution to mitigate CO2 emissions and harness renewable energy sources. Among CO2RR products, formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-) is particularly attractive due to its industrial relevance, high energy density, and potential candidate as a liquid hydrogen carrier. This study investigates the influence of the initial oxidation state of tin on CO2RR performance using nanostructured SnOx catalysts. A simple, quick, scalable, and cost-effective synthesis strategy was employed to f

Feasibility of controlled nitric oxide generation via ascorbate induced chemical reduction of nitrite ions.

Inhalable nitric oxide (iNO) is a lifesaving, FDA-approved drug to improve oxygenation in persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. iNO also has many other applications in lung diseases owing to its vasodilatory and antimicrobial effects. However, its wider therapeutic application is often prohibited by the high cost and logistical barriers of traditional NO/N2 gas tanks. Development of low-cost, portable and tankless nitric oxide (NO) generators is a critical need to advance iNO therapy. Here, we describe the feasibility of NO generation by the controlled reduction of nitrite (NO2-) i

Polyoxometalates for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide and its derivatives: from novel structures to functional applications.

Nitrogen oxide and its derivatives, including nitroaromatic hydrocarbons and various other nitro compounds, are commonly used in industrial applications such as synthesizing drugs, dyes, pesticides, and explosives. However, these compounds are also highly toxic to the environment. Their long-term accumulation can significantly affect air and water quality and disrupt ecosystems. Thus, efficiently converting these harmful compounds into more valuable products through catalytic processes is an urgent challenge in chemical catalysis. In this regard, polyoxometalates (POMs) have emerged as promisi

Monitoring the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the fluidized bed drying/granulation process and evaluation of reduction methods.

The presence of N-nitrosamine impurities and nitrosamine drug substance-related impurities (NDSRIs) in medicines poses a significant challenge not only for manufacturers of drug substances, drug products, and excipients but also for related industries such as machinery and analytical equipment manufacturers. In addition to the ongoing identification of new NDSRIs, new causes of nitrosamine generation such as atmospheric nitrogen oxides have also been identified. These developments suggest that further discoveries in this area are likely in the future. This study is the first to demonstrate a m

Sirtuins mediate the reduction of age-related oxidative damage in the cochlea under a cocoa-rich diet.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a common condition among older adults. It has long been established that ARHL is more prevalent, is more severe, and tends to occur earlier in men than in women. A key factor contributing to ARHL is oxidative stress, which harms the inner ear cells. Sirtuins are a family of proteins that play critical roles in cellular regulation, particularly in response to stress and aging, and have demonstrated anti-aging effects. Cocoa flavonoids, due to their antioxidant properties, have been reported to provide numerous health benefits. The present study aimed to evalua
