Sweet Temptations: How Does Reading a Fotonovela About Diabetes Affect Dutch Adults with Different Levels of Literacy?

Recent studies suggest that health-related fotonovelas-booklets that portray a dramatic story using photographs and captions-may be effective health communication tools, especially for readers with a low level of literacy. In this experiment, effects on knowledge and behavioral intentions were assessed of a fotonovela originally developed for a Latin-American audience. Dutch readers from a low literacy group (N = 89) and a high literacy group (N = 113) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a fotonovela condition (all captions translated into Dutch), a traditional brochure conditio

Preference of patient information leaflets over standard drug monographs by patients prescribed hydrochlorothiazide, nifedipine and enalapril.

Standard drug monographs (SDMs) have been described as deficient in providing information in a manner simplified enough for patient reading. The aim of this study was to design patient information leaflets for hydrochlorothiazide, nifedipine and enalapril with content indicated by patients as relevant and to evaluate them against the SDM. Patient information leaflet (PIL) for each drug was designed to contain information on name, use of drug, how it works, how it is to be taken, common side effects, storage, missed dose action, things to avoid and when to contact the physician. Appropriateness

Interventions for reducing anxiety in women undergoing colposcopy.

BACKGROUND: Prior to the development of cervical cancer abnormal cervical cells can be detected on a cervical smear. The usual practice following an abnormal cervical smear is to perform colposcopy. Colposcopy is the visualisation of the cervix using a binocular microscope. Women experience high levels of anxiety and negative emotional responses at all stages of cervical screening. High levels of anxiety before and during colposcopy can have adverse consequences, including pain and discomfort during the procedure and high loss to follow-up rates. This review evaluates interventions designed to

Evaluating psychosocial and behavioral mechanisms of change in a tailored communication intervention.

This study examined the impact of a tailored nutrition intervention at 3 and 6 months postintervention. In all, 357 Latinas were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) a control condition comprised of previously developed Spanish language targeted materials, (2) tailored print materials, or (3) tailored print materials accompanied by personalized dietary counseling via lay heath advisors (promotoras). At 6 months postintervention, significant group by time interactions were observed on the dietary behavioral strategies scales. The promotora condition resulted in significant behavior

Nigeria task force alerts public to fistula hazards.

Nigeria's National Task Force on Vesico-vaginal Fistula has published a booklet to draw public attention to the problem of fistulae. The 20-page booklet explains how fistulae happen and what can be done to prevent them. It makes clear that early marriage and early pregnancy are major causes of fistulae that lead to the social rejection of many young women. The booklet tells the story of two girls in a series of color pictures with accompanying text in Hausa and English. One girl is given in marriage to an older man at the age of nine, becomes pregnant before she is fully grown, suffers obstruc

Acceptability of a standalone written leaflet for the National Health Service for England Targeted Lung Health Check Programme: A concurrent, think-aloud study.

BACKGROUND: Many countries are introducing low-dose computed tomography screening programmes for people at high risk of lung cancer. Effective communication strategies that convey risks and benefits, including unfamiliar concepts and outcome probabilities based on population risk, are critical to achieving informed choice and mitigating inequalities in uptake. METHODS: This study investigated the acceptability of an aspect of NHS England's communication strategy in the form of a leaflet that was used to invite and inform eligible adults about the Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) programme. The Cervical Dysplasia Worksheet: A Longitudinal Map of Cervical Dysplasia Cytology and Histology Tests and Procedures.

OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were to describe the Cervical Dysplasia Worksheet (CDW), provide evidence of its feasibility to view patient cervical dysplasia results over time, and evaluate patient attitudes toward the tool in the setting of abnormal result follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CDW augments the ASCCP guidelines for managing abnormal cervical cancer screenings by visually depicting cervical cytological and histological history along a color gradient showing severity. We evaluated tool feasibility by graphing a retrospectively reviewed convenience sample of patient data. A cross-se

Interventions for raising breast cancer awareness in women.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer continues to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women globally. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are key to better outcomes. Since many women will discover a breast cancer symptom themselves, it is important that they are breast cancer aware i.e. have the knowledge, skills and confidence to detect breast changes and present promptly to a healthcare professional. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions for raising breast cancer awareness in women. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Breast Cancer Group's Specialise

From observation to intervention: development of a psychoeducational intervention to increase uptake of BRCA genetic counseling among high-risk breast cancer survivors.

We describe the development of a psychoeducational intervention (PEI) to increase uptake of genetic counseling targeted to high-risk breast cancer survivors. Based on previous research, scientific literature, and a review of cancer education websites, we identified potential PEI content. We then assessed the initial acceptability and preference of two booklets of identical content but different layouts, by presenting the booklets to individuals with a personal or family history of breast cancer (n = 57). The preferred booklet was evaluated by two focus groups of ten breast cancer patients who

A Review on Self-Care-Promoting Interventions in Hemodialysis Patients.

Considering the importance of self-care in hemodialysis patients and the lack of comprehensive evaluation of the effects of interventions on self-care in patients undergoing hemodialysis, the present study provides evidence to review the interventions and strategies that promote self-care behaviors in hemodialysis patients. This narrative review study was conducted to identify interventions to promote self-care in hemodialysis patients. To find evidence related to the study objective, the databases such as PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, SID, Magiran, and the Google Scholar search engi

Empowering women, strengthening support: a quality improvement project to enhance pelvic floor health awareness.

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a prevalent yet under-recognised condition among obstetric women, often presenting as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Despite evidence supporting pelvic floor muscle training as an effective first-line management strategy, awareness and service utilisation remain suboptimal. This quality improvement project, conducted at Singapore General Hospital, aimed to enhance PFD awareness among obstetric patients and nursing staff and to increase physiotherapy uptake from a baseline of 0% to 50% within 6 months.The comprehensive root cause analysis ident

A storytelling approach to type 1 diabetes mellitus community health education to promote early recognition in underserved populations.

The incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has increased worldwide over recent decades. Early disease recognition reduces the occurrence of complications. This study aimed to determine if a community health education intervention utilizing a storytelling teaching method could increase knowledge and awareness regarding T1DM among underserved communities to promote early recognition. Six pharmacy students delivered educational sessions at various venues using standardized materials, including pamphlets, poster boards, and a narrative case titled "Recognizing the Signs: Bella's Story." TB will never end because of us: Experiences of TB preventive treatment among people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). TB preventive treatment (TPT) has been found to reduce the risk of TB among PLWHA. As TPT has become a standard component of HIV care, understanding client-level perceptions and knowledge of TPT is crucial to optimizing uptake. METHODS: This qualitative sub-study was conducted within a cluster-randomized trial evaluating a TPT initiation strategy in two provinces of South Africa. The qualitative component explored patient understanding and experiences with HIV, TB, and

Primary Outcome from a cluster-randomized trial of three formats for delivering Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) to the significant others of problem drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is an intervention designed to help the concerned significant others (CSOs) of people with alcohol problems who are reluctant to seek treatment. It aims to improve the well-being of CSOs and teach them how to change their behavior in order to positively influence the "identified patient" (IP) to seek treatment. METHODS: The aim of the present pragmatic cluster-randomized trial was to compare the effectiveness of three formats for delivering CRAFT in real life settings: group sessions, individual sessions, and written material onl
