Mesenteric panniculitis is associated with cardiovascular risk-factors: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the prevalence of cardiovascular risk-factors in patients with mesenteric panniculitis. AIMS: To determine whether cardiovascular risk-factors and mesenteric panniculitis are associated. METHODS: Retrospective, matched case-control study of patients referred to Meir Medical Center, Israel, 2014-2019, who underwent computerized tomography scan, were diagnosed mesenteric panniculitis by radiologic criteria. They were compared to two, matched case-control groups: hospitalized patients without mesenteric panniculitis and the general population based on Israeli Mi

Regorafenib- associated panniculitis.

Regorafenib is a second-generation multikinase inhibitor that is approved for the treatment of metastatic colon cancer and advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Hand-foot skin reaction, alopecia, and oral mucositis are well-established side effects of this medication. Herein, we discuss a 60-year-old woman who developed a lobular and septal granulomatous panniculitis after six months of therapy with regorafenib. Biopsy demonstrated focal lobular and septal granulomatous inflammation admixed with septal fibrosis and lobular lymphohistiocytic infiltrate associated with fat necrosis. To our k

Spontaneous resolution of severe, symptomatic mesocolic panniculitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare chronic fibrosing inflammatory disease that typically affects the adipose tissue and mesentery of the small intestine but may also affect the mesosigmoid and the mesocolon. The pathology of this disease remains unclear despite association with some malignancies or inflammatory disorders. We report a case of mesocolic panniculitis and a literature review of its clinical presentation, imaging findings, associated conditions and treatment options. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64 year-old Caucasian man was admitted to the gastroenterology department for sever

Are tumefactive lesions classified as sclerosing mesenteritis a subset of IgG4-related sclerosing disorders?

BACKGROUND: The relationship between tumefactive lesions classified as sclerosing mesenteritis and IgG4-related sclerosing disorders (eg, lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis/autoimmune pancreatitis) remains uncertain. AIMS: To review lesions coded as "sclerosing mesenteritis" for findings in keeping with IgG4-related sclerosing disorders. METHODS: Inclusion in the study required available paraffin blocks for IgG4 staining and documentation of a mass lesion. RESULTS: A total of nine mesenteric lesions (3-14 cm) were identified in 6 male and 3 female patients. On H&E-stained sections, a

[Drug addiction morbidity in Republic of Dagestan].

In Republic of Dagestan, analysis of drug addiction morbidity rate for last ten years refers to that its level in urban population is four times higher than in rural areas. Portion of opiate addicts detected for the first time consists 46.8% in urban areas and 22.1% in rural areas. In the morbidity structure of age-specific drug addiction highest level is in the age group of 20-39 years and 40-59 years. In rural areas, as compared with urban areas, drug addiction cases among women were detected for the first time only in 2004. In rural areas and towns of Republic, there are territories with hi

Aggressive multiple myeloma presenting as mesenteric panniculitis.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disease of the bowel mesentery, characterized by tumor-like infiltration by chronic inflammatory cells, fat necrosis, and fibrosis. Reported cases cited clinical presentation ranging from abdominal pain to fever of unknown origin, the majority of which were idiopathic and associated with a benign prognosis. We report the case of a 43-yr-old male who presented with malaise, weight loss, microcytic anemia, and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Radiographic and histological investigations revealed typical features of mesenteric panniculitis. Initial treatmen

Retractile mesenteritis: to treat or not to treat.

Retractile mesenteritis is a rare entity characterized by an inflammatory process of the mesenteric adipose tissue. The disease usually presents with abdominal pain or a palpable abdominal mass. In the majority of cases, the disease is self-limiting and the prognosis is favorable. In this paper we describe a patient who presented with a 7 x 8 cm mass in the left upper abdomen, nausea and pain in the lower back. Symptomatic treatment was given with good result. The literature on different therapeutic intervention is briefly discussed.

CT evaluation of mesenteric panniculitis: prevalence and associated diseases.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of mesenteric panniculitis on CT and to describe its appearance and associated diseases. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 7620 consecutive abdominal CT examinations were prospectively evaluated for features common to mesenteric panniculitis such as a well-delineated inhomogeneous hyperattenuated fatty mass at the mesenteric root, envelopment of mesenteric vessels, and no evidence of invasion of the adjacent small-bowel loops that may be displaced. RESULTS: CT findings of mesenteric panniculitis were seen in 49 patients (0.6%). We

Sclerosing mesenteritis: an unusual cause of abdominal pain in an HIV-positive patient.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, idiopathic, and benign mesenteric lesion that is characterized by fat necrosis, fibrosis, and chronic inflammation. We report a case of sclerosing mesenteritis presenting as recurrent abdominal pain in an HIV-positive patient. Because of the wider differential diagnosis in such cases, the patient underwent an extensive workup culminating in a laparoscopy with biopsy. Tamoxifen has been shown to be useful in the treatment of desmoid tumors and idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. We present the first case of sclerosing mesenteritis to respond to tamoxifen ther

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis Associated with Disseminated Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Infection in a Patient with Mesenteric Panniculitis.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by non-specific inflammation of the adipose tissue in the mesentery. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a life-threating disease associated with aberrant macrophage overactivation, in which infections can be a leading cause in immunocompromised hosts. Here, we report a rare case of mesenteric panniculitis and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis complicated by disseminated Mycobacterium intracellulare. A 71-year-old male with mesenteric panniculitis was admitted to our hospital for fever and pancytopenia. He was treated w

Crohn's disease mistaken for long-standing idiopathic mesenteric panniculitis: A case report and management algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is mostly an associated sign of an intra-abdominal or systemic inflammatory primary disease. Nevertheless, etiological and differential diagnosis of idiopathic MP can be challenging when an associate primary cause is not in the foreground. METHODS: We report here the case of an isolated small bowel Crohn's disease, long time considered as idiopathic MP. RESULTS: This patient presented to our department with a 10-year history of acute abdominal symptoms evolving with flare-up and remission. A diagnosis of idiopathic MP was made based on compatible CT-s

Mesenteric panniculitis: prevalence, clinicoradiological presentation and 5-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence, clinicoradiological characteristics and outcome of patients with mesenteric panniculitis (MP) in a large hospital-based population. METHODS: Consecutive abdominal CT examinations of 3820 patients were evaluated for MP. Clinical characteristics, therapy and outcome of patients with MP were evaluated during a 5-year follow-up period. A matched pair analysis was performed to further investigate the relation between MP and malignancy. RESULTS: 94 (2.5%) patients with MP were identified (mean age, 66.6 ± 11.2 years, 70.2% male). MP coexisted with malignancy (es

[A case of idiopathic sclerosing mesenteritis with retroperitoneal fibrosis].

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare inflammatory disease of the bowel mesentery. It produces tumor-like masses of the mesentery composed of varying degrees of fibrosis, chronic inflammation, and fat necrosis. It has been described variously as fibrosing mesenteritis, retractile mesenteritis, mesenteric Weber Christian disease, and systemic nodular panniculitis. The etiology and pathogenesis of the disease are as yet unknown, but autoimmune disorder, previous abdominal surgery, trauma, and ischemia could play a role. The clinical features include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipati

Demonstration of efficacy of combining corticosteroids and colchicine in two patients with idiopathic sclerosing mesenteritis.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is an uncommon condition of unknown etiology. It is likely to be the fibrous evolution of mesenteric panniculitis. It often has an indolent course but may be complicated by progressive bowel obstruction. The treatment of the symptomatic forms is not well established. The observations of two women (20 and 65 years old) with a relentless downhill course of biopsy-proved sclerosing mesenteritis are described. A treatment regimen with corticosteroid therapy (initially 1 mg/kg/day) and colchicine (1 mg/day) led, in both cases, to a rapid improvement. Abdominal computer tomog
