Use of the MMPI in the prediction of dangerous behavior.

The prediction of violent behavior can be an important aspect in the diagnostic work-up of a patient. Can the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) be of any help in predicting dangerous behavior? DSM-III disorders in which violent behavior has a high probability to occur, and the corresponding MMPI profiles are discussed.

Phemenological aspects of personality disorders in adult psychiatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Many empirical studies give evidence of co-occurrence of mental and personality disorders (PDs). On the other hand theoretical models explain the relationship between personality and mental disorders from different perspectives. This research studied the phemenological aspects of PDs in adult psychiatric patients with different mental disorders according to cognitive and psychoanalytic criteria for personality pathology. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In order to study personality pathology in different diagnostic groups we constructed a self-report Questionnaire of Personality Disorders (

[Schizophrenic defect syndromes and drive behavior].

First the terms "impulse" (Antrieb) and "schizophrenic defect" (schizophrener Defekt) are explained and defined. 49 (= 12 per cent) of the 409 schizophrenic in-patients, treated 1970-1972, had the symptoms of a schizophrenic defect. All of them showed disturbances of impulse: more than half the patients a deficiency, nearly a third an unsettled surplus, and about ten percent an alternating impulse. The deficiency as the alternating impulse usually were accompanied with a negativ mood. The surplus of impulse was bound up as equal parts with positive and negative moods. At last any kind of distu

A late form of neurosyphilis manifesting with psychotic symptoms in old age and good response to ceftriaxone therapy.

Neurosyphilis can present with psychiatric symptoms. The late form can occur in old age with psychosis, paranoid delusions, affective disorders or cognitive impairment. Here we present a case of neurosyphilis in an elderly woman who, over six months, progressively manifested personality changes and paranoid delusions which were initially suspected as Alzheimer's disease. Psychotic symptoms showed a good response to antibiotic treatment. We conclude that neurosyphilis is a relevant differential diagnosis in patients developing severe psychiatric symptoms in old age. As a causal antibiotic treat

Personality connotations of psychiatric diagnoses. Implications for a similarity model.

The major concern of this study was to identify the personality traits connotated by a number of diagnostic labels such as paranoid, schizoid, hysterical, and cyclothymic. Twenty psychiatrists were given a list of nonpsychotic personality disorders and were asked to indicate what personality traits were typically associated with them. Results showed good agreement among psychiatrists on the personality traits they believed to be implied by the diagnostic terms. A factor analysis of the ratings showed a circular configuration of relative similarity among the different diagnoses. The results are

The significance of personality disorder and traits in short-term psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy for major depression.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown inconsistent results regarding the impact of personality disorder (PD) on psychotherapy outcomes for depression. There is a scarcity of studies comparing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with short-term psychodynamic therapy (STPP). This study aimed to compare outcome of STPP and CBT in depressed patients with and without PD and investigate whether PD or specific PD traits differentially affected outcome in STPP and CBT. METHODS: One hundred outpatients with major depression (PD, n=28; NoPD, n=72) were randomized to STPP or CBT and followed up after 28 weeks.

Psychopathological mediators between insecure attachment and psychotic features in a non-clinical sample: the role of depression and interpersonal sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Attachment styles represent a personality pattern critical to psychological health, with insecure attachment being a central factor in developing psychopathological characteristics of psychosis. However, its downstream psychopathological pathways remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the putative psychopathological mediators in the relationship between insecure attachment and psychotic features in a non-clinical sample of university students. METHODS: We recruited two non-clinical samples for a total of 978 subjects, 324 males and 654 females, and administered the Rela

Proteomic profile of serum from patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

This article describes the most likely classes of proteins and molecular processes that specifically characterize schizophrenic spectrum disorders such as simple and paranoid schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, and acute polymorphic psychotic disorder (APPD). The identification of patients' serum proteins was carried out using mass spectrometry. For patients with paranoid schizophrenia, the proteins responsible for translation and transcription are characteristic. A significant part of the proteins of patients with simple schizophrenia regulate the cell's main metabolic and transport processe

Paranoia and Suicidality: A Cross-Sectional Study in the General Population.

Paranoia and suicidality seem to be common traits expressing in the general population to varying degrees. This study aims to explore the association between both and to identify determinants of comorbidity. We interviewed a representative sample of the population in Andalusia (n = 4507) and assessed paranoia and suicidality utilizing the Spanish Green's Paranoid Thoughts Scale (S-GPTS) and the suicidality section of the MINI Neuropsychiatric Interview, respectively. We gathered data on socio-demographics, personality, substance abuse, social support, and environmental distress. We found that

An empirical comparison of interpersonal and DSM-III approaches to classification of personality disorders.

In recent years, a number of authors have attempted to map correspondences between interpersonal models and traditional psychiatric classification. Many of the proposed relationships are plausible from a theoretical standpoint, but at present little empirical evidence has been gathered in support of these speculations. This paper describes the results of a project that suggests that the convergence of these two approaches to personality taxonomy is not as high as might be expected. In particular, it seems that DSM-III personality disorders are not as differentiated with respect to affiliative

Pathological dissociation and neuropsychological functioning in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Transient, stress-related severe dissociative symptoms or paranoid ideation is one of the criteria defining the borderline personality disorder (BPD). Examinations of the neuropsychological correlates of BPD reveal various findings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between dissociation and neuropsychological functioning in patients with BPD. METHOD: The performance on an extensive neuropsychological battery of patients with BPD with (n=10) and without (n=20) pathological dissociation was compared with that of healthy controls (n=30). RESULTS: Patients w

Face Your Fears: Virtual reality-based cognitive behavioral therapy (VR-CBT) versus standard CBT for paranoid ideations in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders cause suffering for patients, relatives, and the surrounding society. Paranoid ideations, encompassing ideas of social reference and manifest persecutory delusions, are among the most frequent symptoms in this population and a cause of significant distress. Recent meta-analyses of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for psychosis show small to moderate effect sizes in reducing paranoid ideations. Virtual reality-based CBT (VR-CBT) could improve therapy efficacy as exposure and behavioral experiments in VR can be optimized, individualized, and carried

Day treatment of patients with personality disorders: experiences from a Norwegian treatment research network.

This study sought to investigate the following research questions: Are time-limited day treatment programs for patients with personality disorder (PD) effective outside resourceful university settings, and what are the overall treatment results when the program is implemented on a larger scale? Do all categories and subtypes of PDs respond favorably to such treatment? How intensive should such day treatment programs be? All patients (n = 1,244) were consecutively admitted to eight different treatment programs in the Norwegian Network of Psychotherapeutic Day Hospitals from 1993 to 2000. Altoge

[Personality and psychopathology in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome].

Twenty-one patients with primary Sjogrens' syndrome were investigated for hostility structure and psychiatric symptomatology. It was observed that they manifested high levels of hostility with an intropunitive direction in combination with highly scored delusional items of guilt and paranoid hostility. Acting-out hostility was in low levels. From the psychopathology point of view the majority of patients reported mainly depression and somatization, as well as anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Unexpectedly paranoid symptoms were revealed in a substantial number of these patients. SS pa

[Psychogenic pathologic personality development in advanced age].

A study of 51 patients with psychogenic abnormalities developed in old age has shown that the development of such disorders is a comparatively frequent outcome of neuroses and reactive psychoses with the onset in the presenile period and only as an exception takes place in patients with the onset of psychogenic disturbances in old age. Depressive development has proved most typical for advanced age. Such manifestations as chronic subdepression, diffuse hypochondria, egocentrism and rent orientations are universal for all clinical variants of senile pathological development of personality. Acco
