Craniocerebral maduromycosis.

Craniocerebral maduromycetoma is extremely rare; only 2 cases have been reported so far. The authors report a case of maduromycetoma in a 17-year-old girl from a rural background in the state of Rajasthan, India, with involvement of the right parietal cortex, overlying bone, and subcutaneous tissue. The mass was totally excised, along with the involved dura mater, bone, and scalp. She was given antifungal drugs in the postoperative period. The patient responded very well to the treatment, and there were no signs of recurrence at the 6-month follow-up visit. The clinical features, imaging and h

[Fibrous dysplasia of the skull: neurologic manifestations].

The neurological manifestations of eight patients with osseous fibrous dysplasia of skull were retrospectively studied. In this series, the frontal bone was involved in 75% of the patients, the sphenoid or temporal bones in 37.5%, and the parietal in 25%. It was observed that cranial deformities occurred in all but one case, headache was present in 87.5% of the patients, visual disturbances in 50%, proptosis in 25%, and auditive symptoms in 12.5%. Six out of the eight patients were operated on: three of the four who presented progressive visual loss had postoperative improvement. In their foll

Multicentric Calvarial Hemangioma with Dural Invasion: A Case Report.

Calvarial hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors originating from the skull bones, most commonly observed in the frontal and parietal bones of the cranium. Although most cases are asymptomatic, they can present with headache, cosmetic deformity, or, rarely, neurological deficit. The lesions are usually solitary; multicentric involvement and dural invasion are exceedingly rare phenomena. Here, we report a 22-year-old male patient who presented with frontal headache and a palpable scalp swelling. Imaging revealed two separate expansile lytic lesions in the right and left frontal bones with

[A case of solitary plasmacytoma that originated in a rib].

A 52-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of left anterior chest pain. A chest X-ray showed a tumor shadow in the left 4th rib. No abnormalities were detected in peripheral blood and aspirated bone marrow samples. The tumor was surgically resected with the involved bone, the intercostal muscle and the parietal pleura. The resected specimen contained a 3 x 6 x 3 cm lesion, and histological investigation of the tumor revealed a plasmacytoma of the rib. It relapsed as a multiple myeloma within two months after surgery. Chemotherapy was administered and the bone les

One-piece Craniofacial Bone Fracture Reduction With an Additional Single Osteotomy at the Zygomaticomaxillary Buttress: A Successful Reduction of Frontoorbitozygomaticomaxillary Fracture Associated With a Temporoparietal Bone Fracture.

A frontoorbitozygomaticomaxillary fracture, also known as a complex midface fracture or "quadripod fracture," is a type of facial fracture involving multiple midface region bones. This includes the frontal bone (forehead), orbitozygomatic complex (which includes the zygomatic bone or cheekbone and the orbital bones around the eye), and the maxillary bone (upper jaw). These complex midface fractures associated with temporoparietal bone fractures can occur in clinical practice. However, a single-piece fracture of these has not been reported before. This study reports a 44-year-old male patient w

Treatment of recurrent intractable periauricular fistula using temporoparietal fascia.

The temporoparietal fascia has been used extensively for vascularized tissue coverage, augmentation, and facial contouring. The temporoparietal fascial graft provides thin, broad, pliable, easily neovascularized, adequate coverage, contour, and bulk, as well as a hidden donor site.A 19-year-old woman had periauricular fistulae since she was 2 years. Her condition was diagnosed as left preauricular fistula, and she has been operated on by otolaryngologists 8 times and by plastic surgeons 2 times. The temporoparietal fascia was tunneled through a postauricular pocket to fulfill the cavity under

A case of unilateral coronal synostosis in a child with craniofacial microsomia.

Craniofacial microsomia is a congenital malformation complex associated with a wide array of craniofacial and extracraniofacial anomalies. Frontal plagiocephaly has been shown to occur in approximately 5% to 12% of patients with craniofacial microsomia. The etiology of craniofacial microsomia-associated frontal plagiocephaly is unclear; of the cases described in the literature, all but one had physical findings suggestive of deformational plagiocephaly. In the case with equivocal physical findings, radiographic studies showed no evidence of craniosynostosis. Unlike the above cases, we report a

Bilambdoid and posterior sagittal synostosis: the Mercedes Benz syndrome.

A consistent pattern of craniosynostosis in the sagittal and bilateral lambdoid sutures is described in three patients. The external cranial ridging associated with fusion of these sutures produces a characteristic triradiate, or "Mercedes Benz," appearance to the posterior skull. Locally marked growth restriction is evident in the posterior fossa with compensatory secondary expansion of the anterior fossa manifesting a degree of frontal bossing which mimics bicoronal synostosis. Although this appearance could lead to inadvertent surgery in the frontal region, attention to the occipital region

Treatment of calcified cephalohematoma.

This is a case report concerning the surgical treatment of a calcified cephalohematoma, which was possibly caused by an intrauterine fetal monitor. This is the first report of this particular entity as a complication of an intrauterine fetal monitor. As far as we can determine, there is no detailed information available about surgical decision making or surgical techniques for removing such lesions. We operated because of the size and persistence of the lesion. We developed a procedure in which we used the bony cap of the cephalohematoma for a cranioplasty, securing it with microplates.

The importance of nonlinear tissue modelling in finite element simulations of infant head impacts.

Despite recent efforts on the development of finite element (FE) head models of infants, a model capable of capturing head responses under various impact scenarios has not been reported. This is hypothesized partially attributed to the use of simplified linear elastic models for soft tissues of suture, scalp and dura. Orthotropic elastic constants are yet to be determined to incorporate the direction-specific material properties of infant cranial bone due to grain fibres radiating from the ossification centres. We report here on our efforts in advancing the above-mentioned aspects in material

Cellular dynamics and tissue interactions of the dura mater during head development.

During development and growth of the neurocranium, the dura mater regulates events in the underlying brain and overlying skull by the release of soluble factors and cellular activity. Morphogenesis of the cranial bones and sutures is dependent on tissue interactions with the dura mater, which control the size and shape of bones as well as sutural patency. Development of the brain also involves interactions with dura mater: secretion of stromal derived factor 1 (SDF-1) is a critical event in directing migration of the external granular layer precursors of the cerebellar cortex and the Cajal-Ret

The Sox2 high mobility group transcription factor inhibits mature osteoblast function in transgenic mice.

We have previously shown that in osteoblasts Sox2 expression can be induced by Fgfs, and can inhibit Wnt signaling and differentiation. Furthermore, in mice in which Sox2 is conditionally deleted in the osteoblastic lineage, bones are osteopenic, and Sox2 inactivation in cultured osteoblasts leads to a loss of proliferative ability with a senescent phenotype. To help understand the role of Sox2 in osteoblast development we have specifically expressed Sox2 in bone from a Col1α1 promoter, which extended Sox2 expression into more mature osteoblasts. In long bones, trabecular cartilage remodeling

Injury pattern and the biomechanical assessment of skull fracture risk in blows with a rubber mallet.

Acts of violence often result in blunt force trauma. On behalf of the court, forensic experts not only have to assess injuries in terms of morphology or severity, but they also have to give statements regarding the risk of potential fatal injuries. We describe a case of domestic violence where a man hit the head of his wife using a rubber mallet. His wife sustained extensive and multiple parietal scalp lacerations and avulsions with exposure of the cranial bone. A CCT revealed neither skull fractures nor intracranial injuries. Biomechanical measurements were performed using a bowling ball and

Posttraumatic Triple Acute Epidural Hematomas: First Report of Bilateral Synchronous Epidural Hematoma and a Third Delayed.

BACKGROUND: Development of a delayed acute epidural hematoma (DEDH) represents a rare event, characterized by a high mortality rate. It is defined as an extradural bleeding not evident at the first brain computed tomography (CT) scan performed after traumatic brain injury but evidenced by further radiologic evaluations. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old male was admitted to our unit after brain injury due to an assault. Immediate brain CT scan revealed a right frontal epidural hematoma (EDH) and a smaller left anterior temporal EDH with multiple, bilateral skull fractures in the frontal, pariet

Cranial hemophilic pseudotumor: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Hemophilic pseudotumor is a rare complication of hemophilia, occurring in 1 to 2% of patients with severe hemophilia. Its principal sites of occurrence are the long bones and the pelvis. Only one case of this tumor occurring in the cranium has been previously reported. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We report a case of cranial hemophilic pseudotumor involving the diploe of the right parietal vault. A 29-year-old man with severe hemophilia (Factor VIII, 0.8% of normal activity) presented with an unsightly scalp protrusion measuring 5 x 5 x 2 cm and tingling discomfort in the

Tracing craniosynostosis to its developmental stage through bone center displacement.

In metopic and coronal suture synostosis, the involved bone centers are abnormally situated just next to the affected suture. Bone centers are the starting point of ossification during embryogenesis from which bone growth spreads radially. In this paper, we describe a similar observation for sagittal suture synostosis, with both parietal bone centers located almost completely cranially. The (reduced) distance between the bone centers of a synostotic suture reflects the time during embryogenesis at which fusion took place. We suggest that in craniosynostosis the bone centers arise in their norm

Functional haploinsufficiency of the human homeobox gene MSX2 causes defects in skull ossification.

The genetic analysis of congenital skull malformations provides insight into normal mechanisms of calvarial osteogenesis. Enlarged parietal foramina (PFM) are oval defects of the parietal bones caused by deficient ossification around the parietal notch, which is normally obliterated during the fifth fetal month. PFM are usually asymptomatic, but may be associated with headache, scalp defects and structural or vascular malformations of the brain. Inheritance is frequently autosomal dominant, but no causative mutations have been identified in non-syndromic cases. We describe here heterozygous mu

Effects of glass-ceramic produced by the sol-gel route in macrophages recruitment and polarization into bone tissue regeneration.

Effective bone substitute biomaterials remain an important challenge in patients with large bone defects. Glass ceramics produced by different synthesis routes may result in changes in the material physicochemical properties and consequently affect the success or failure of the bone healing response. To investigate the differences in the orchestration of the inflammatory and healing process in bone grafting and repair using different glass-ceramic routes production.
