Tool making cockatoos adjust the lengths but not the widths of their tools to function.

The ability to innovatively use or even manufacture different tools depending on a current situation can be silhouetted against examples of stereotyped, inborn tool use/manufacture and is thus often associated to advanced cognitive processing. In this study we confronted non-specialized, yet innovative tool making birds, Goffin's cockatoos (Cacatua goffiniana), with an apparatus featuring an out-of-reach food reward that could be placed at different distances from a tool opening. Alternatively, the food stayed at a constant distance but the tool opening in the front of the apparatus had differ

Avian paramyxovirus serotype 3 infection in Neopsephotus, Cyanoramphus, and Neophema species.

An outbreak of avian paramyxovirus serotype 3 (APMV-3) infection occurred in a private bird collection consisting mainly of Neophema species. Two Bourke's parrots (Neopsephotus bourkii) and one red-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) were examined after developing torticollis and circling. The 3 birds were euthanatized and submitted for necropsy. Brain and liver samples from the 3 birds were homogenized and inoculated into the allantoic cavity of 10-day-old embryonated specific-pathogen-free chicken eggs. An APMV-3 isolate replicated but did not induce embryonic mortality after up t

The topographical anatomy and arterial supply of the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

This investigation was conducted on 30 adult, male and female budgerigars. The thyroid and parathyroid glands adhere to each other on both sides of the body and are surrounded by a common connective tissue capsule. The glandular "cluster" on the right side was cranial and dorsal in relation to that on the left. The thyroid glands were most often supplied with blood by the following glandular arteries: the caudal thyroid (1-4), the cranial thyroid (1-3) and the middle thyroid (1 or 2). The caudal thyroid generally branched from the oesophagotracheobronchial artery. On the right side the cranial

Detection of Leishmania donovani in Wild-Caught Phlebotomine Sand Flies in Endemic Focus of Leishmaniasis in Himachal Pradesh, India.

An endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is located in the Sutlej River Valley in Himachal Pradesh (India) in the north-western Himalaya where CL co-exists with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). In areas of the Indian subcontinent such as Rajasthan, cutaneous leishmaniasis is transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) and Phlebotomus salehi. In Himachal Pradesh, Phlebotomus longiductus (Parrot) is suspected to be the vector for CL. In the current study, sand flies were collected and tested for Leishmania infection and to confirm the vector species causing CL. Sand flies were collected du

Comparison of different methods of semen cryopreservation in Melopsittacus undulatus.

Melopsittacus undulatus is largely used as a potential model for assisted reproduction in other endangered parrot species. Semen was collected from nineteen healthy adult males, by massage technique, during the breeding season. After preliminary evaluations through CASA analysis, eight birds were selected as semen donors and five ejaculates of each bird were utilized to evaluate the effect of 10% ethylene glycol (EG) addition, in two times, during 40min of equilibration time at 4°C, and to compare two programmable freezing curves (a rapid and a slow temperature descent rate) and freezing on ni

Delayed Clinical Onset of Congenital Heart Disease in a Geriatric Macaw (Ara ararauna).

An approximately 33-year-old male blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) was presented for postmortem examination after dying without premonitory signs at the owner's home. The bird had a recent history of a grade II/VI left-sided systolic murmur, feather-destructive behavior, was overweight, and had bilateral cataracts. Gross and microscopic postmortem examinations revealed a subaortic interventricular septal saccular defect most compatible with a diverticulum intimately associated with a multifocally fibrotic right coronary aortic semilunar cusp, and its distended sinus. The resulting congestive

Seal and sea lion brains have evolved to support volitional control of vocal behavior and learning.

Seals and sea lions have highly developed volitional breathing control, to which the phocid seals add vocal production learning, including mimicry. In this work, using histology and ex vivo diffusion magnetic resonance imaging tractography, we provide evidence for a phylogenetic spectrum of accumulative neural adaptations supporting aspects of volitional vocal control across pinnipeds. Otariids and phocid seals, but not coyotes, have a direct connection between the vocal motor cortex and phonatory brainstem nuclei. Harbor seals showed hypertrophic connectivity between the anterior ventrolatera

How do big brains evolve?

In both birds and mammals, variation in brain size predominantly reflects variation in mass or volume of the pallium (neocortex) and, to a lesser extent, of the cerebellum, suggesting convergent coevolution of brains and cognition. When brain measures are based on neuron counts, however, a surprisingly different picture emerges: The number of neurons in the cerebellum surpasses those in the pallium of all mammals (including humans and other primates) and in many but not all birds studied to date. In particular, parrots and corvids, clades known for cognitive abilities that match those of prima

Entopallium Lost GFAP Immunoreactivity during Avian Evolution: Is GFAP a "Condition Sine Qua Non"?

INTRODUCTION: The present study demonstrates that in the same brain area the astroglia can express GFAP (the main cytoskeletal protein of astroglia) in some species but not in the others of the same vertebrate class. It contrasts the former opinions that the distribution of GFAP found in a species is characteristic of the entire class. The present study investigated birds in different phylogenetic positions: duck (Cairina moschata domestica), chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), and quails (Coturnix japonica and Excalfactoria chinensis) of Galloanserae; pigeon (Columba livia domestica) of a gro

Unexpected Pathogen Diversity Detected in Australian Avifauna Highlights Potential Biosecurity Challenges.

Birds may act as hosts for numerous pathogens, including members of the family Chlamydiaceae, beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avipoxviruses, Columbid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CoAHV1) and Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 1 (PsAHV1), all of which are a significant biosecurity concern in Australia. While Chlamydiaceae and BFDV have previously been detected in Australian avian taxa, the prevalence and host range of avipoxviruses, CoAHV1 and PsAHV1 in Australian birds remain undetermined. To better understand the occurrence of these pathogens, we screened 486 wild birds (kingfisher, parrot, pigeon and

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Avian Chlamydiosis Detected by Polymerase Chain Reaction in Psittacine Birds in Thailand.

This study surveyed avian chlamydiosis, with the aim to estimate the prevalence and potential risk factors associated with Chlamydia psittaci infection in psittacine birds kept as domestic pets in Thailand. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from 120 psittacine birds that were randomly selected from hospitals in the central (Bangkok) and northeastern regions (Khon Kaen) of Thailand between 2019 and 2021. The oropharyngeal swabs were subject to polymerase chain reaction testing to detect the C psittaci ompA gene. The prevalence of C psittaci was 2.5% (3/ 120, 95% confidence interval = 0.3-5.3).

Prevalence of asymptomatic infections of Chlamydia psittaci in psittacine birds in Korea.

Avian chlamydiosis is an acute or chronic bacterial disease of birds. Chlamydia psittaci is the primary agent of the disease. It is also an important zoonotic pathogen. Chlamydia avium and Chlamydia gallinacea have also been recognized as potential causative agents of the disease. Clinical signs of this disease can vary in severity. Asymptomatic infections of Chlamydia have commonly been reported in various birds worldwide. In this study, we investigated the distribution of Chlamydia species in healthy psittacine birds in Korea. A total of 263 samples (pharyngeal/cloacal swabs and faeces) were

Comparison of herpesvirus isolates from falcons, pigeons and psittacines by restriction endonuclease analysis.

Field isolates of herpesviruses recovered from falcon, pigeon, and psittacine birds were compared by restriction endonuclease (RE) analysis using four separate enzymes. Pigeon and falcon herpesviruses had strikingly similar DNA cleavage patterns, while DNA cleavage pattern of virus isolates from a double-yellow headed Amazon and an African grey parrot had different genomic patterns to both the pigeon and falcon herpesviruses. These findings support the field observations that pigeon herpesvirus causes a fatal herpesviral infection in the livers of pigeon-eating falcons.
