Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Reduction Strategies Among US Adolescents and Adults With Multiple Opposite-Sex Sex Partners or Perceived Partner Nonmonogamy, 2011-2017.

BACKGROUND: This study examined condom use and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing among unmarried, non-cohabiting women and men who had multiple past-year partnerships or perceived their partner's involvement in another sexual relationship. METHODS: We identified 5868 and 5330 unmarried, non-cohabiting sexually active women and men aged 15 to 44 years using National Survey of Family Growth data for 2011 to 2017. To measure multiple partnerships, we created 4 dichotomous variables that included both past-year number of opposite-sex sex partners (1, 2 or more) and perceived partner no

Increasing Access to Medical Forensic Care for the Pediatric Patient.

Child sexual abuse is a major public health problem. About one in every four girls and one in every 13 boys in the United States experience sexual abuse. In order to best serve these patients and families, the forensic nurse examiner team from a large urban Level 1 trauma center partnered with the local child advocacy center to provide ready access to educated, competent pediatric examiners who provide developmentally appropriate medical forensic care in a child-friendly environment. Consistent with national best practice standards, this occurs as part of a coordinated, colocated, highly funct

Stillbirth in Australia 2: Working together to reduce stillbirth in Australia: The Safer Baby Bundle initiative.

The rate of late gestation stillbirth in Australia is unacceptably high. Up to one third of stillbirths are preventable, particularly beyond 28 weeks' gestation. The aim of this second paper in the Stillbirth in Australia series is to highlight one key national initiative, the Safer Baby Bundle (SBB), which has been led by the Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth in partnership with state health departments. Addressing commonly identified evidence practice gaps, the SBB contains five elements that, when implemented together, should result in better outcomes than if performed individuall

Care networks in play: Understanding death of a parent as a contributing factor to homelessness.

Offering an understanding of specialized service needs of those becoming homeless because of the death of a parent or parental figure, this project is set in Detroit's urban context, where residents face economic hardship and intergenerational poverty. In this study, we analyze the voices of practitioners (n = 5) and men (n = 5) who have experienced parental death as a contributing factor to homelessness in Detroit, Michigan. Findings include the following: (1) the impact of death and dying experiences on these men and (2) the role of care networks in these men's lives, particularly when these

Applying Ecological Positive Youth Development Theory to Address Co-Occurring Health Disparities Among Immigrant Latino Youth.

This article outlines the theory and resulting approach employed in a multilevel, integrated, collaborative community intervention called Adelante, implemented by a university-community partnership in a Latino immigrant community to address co-occurring health disparities of substance abuse, sex risk, and interpersonal violence among youth. The basis for the intervention is a social-ecological interpretation of positive youth development theory, which focuses on changes in the person environment context and community assets as a preventive mechanism. This approach is viewed as appropriate for

Short-term benefits from the Incredible Years Parents and Babies Programme in Powys.

The Incredible Years parent and babies programme has been delivered widely across Wales, mainly in high disadvantage Flying Start areas, following training for group leaders funded by the Welsh Government. The programme targets parents and their babies during the first year of their life and contains all of the key components of effective parenting programmes, discussion, observation of effective parenting skills and practice. The Children and Young People's partnership in Powys, a rural county in East Wales, incorporated the programmes into their early intervention/prevention strategy. This p

Maintaining sexuality in menopause.

Sexual health in the menopause is a medical challenge because the progressive decline of sexual hormones interacts with the aging process and many psychosocial stressors modulate vulnerability for sexual symptoms (low sexual desire, poor arousal and lubrication, dyspareunia, orgasmic dysfunction and lack of satisfaction). In clinical practice, a coordinated approach is needed to optimally manage the risk for developing female sexual dysfunction (FSD), especially when chronic conditions are present. Biomedical and psychosocial interventions include general education, recognition of signs and sy

Identifying interventions to optimise advanced kidney care services: scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Multidisciplinary advanced kidney care (AKC) services provide care to patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) (typically estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤20 mls/min/1.73m2), as symptoms and complications become more common, also in preparation for kidney failure treatments. Despite their prominence in UK renal services, there is no consensus around the best practice for AKC services in terms of care delivery models or interventions to optimise patient care, and there is widespread geographical variation in practice. Measuring What Matters: Redesigning Evaluation With Consumers to Understand Engagement in Hand Therapy Using Virtual Reality.

INTRODUCTION: Consumer involvement is essential to ensure health service evaluations reflect what matters to those receiving care. This service improvement project describes how the evaluation of virtual reality (VR) in outpatient hand therapy was redesigned in partnership with consumers to better capture engagement with hand therapy. METHOD: The evaluation was undertaken in an outpatient hand therapy service. Initial evaluation relied on standardised quantitative measures, which did not address the original purpose of implementing VR in the treatment setting. Through collaboration with consu

Relational ethics meets principled practice in community research engagements to understand and address homelessness.

Growing homelessness in Aotearoa New Zealand stems primarily from rising inequalities and poverty. Drawing from scholarship on relational ethics, principled practice and Māori cultural concepts, this paper offers our reflections on nearly two decades of collective work to document and address homelessness. Central to the approach outlined are enduring community partnerships, the cultivation of reciprocal relations, and time spent with homeless people and those trying to work with them. We present exemplars for how we draw on everyday interactions with homeless people and agency staff to enhanc

Quality of Life in Sickle Cell Disease: What Matters.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) represents the practical effects of an illness in terms of symptoms and impacts, and of consequent treatments, as perceived by the patient. HRQoL is a complex multidimensional phenomenon in sickle cell disease (SCD) involving external stressors, thought patterns, emotional distress, physiological arousal, pain, and other complications of SCD. Social determinants of health comprise food and housing security, employment and education, and experiences of racism and discrimination; these social determinants also potentially affect health, HRQoL, and access to

From Intent to Action: Using Implementation Science to Guide Student-Led Street Medicine Outreach.

Medical students increasingly engage in community-based initiatives to address health inequities among marginalized populations, yet often lack structured guidance for translating intent into feasible practice. This Practice Note describes how the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment framework was used to guide a student-led foot and wound care initiative serving people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in northern Minnesota. In a setting marked by extreme cold and rising homelessness, students partnered with community organizations and volunteer registered n

Indigenizing paediatric concussion injury prevention.

This commentary addresses the urgent need for culturally responsive approaches to concussion prevention for Indigenous children in Canada, who face disproportionately higher injury rates compared to non-Indigenous populations. Current prevention strategies do not consider Indigenous priorities of children in Canada, creating a critical gap in culturally appropriate interventions. Effective Indigenization of concussion prevention requires collaborative development between health care professionals and cultural experts, community-specific approaches that respect diverse practices across Indigeno

Developing practice-led solutions for intergenerational diabetes in Pacific populations: a participatory action research project in general practice.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing complex clinical and service delivery challenges in general practice, such as managing type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Pacific families experiencing intergenerational diabetes, is difficult. AIM: This study used participatory action research (PAR) to identify initial steps toward a new model of T2D care for Pacific peoples, to disrupt the cycle of intergenerational diabetes. METHODS: A modified PAR process was undertaken in a very low-cost access general practice serving a predominantly Pacific population. Six sequential focus groups (FGs) were held with clinical, support,

Supporting community overdose response planning in Ontario, Canada: Findings from a situational assessment.

BACKGROUND: Many communities across North America are coming together to develop comprehensive plans to address and respond to the escalating overdose crisis, largely driven by an increasingly toxic unregulated drug supply. As there is a need to build capacity for successful implementation, the objective of our mixed methods study was to identify the current planning and implementation practices, needs, and priority areas of support for community overdose response plans in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We used a situational assessment methodology to collect data on current planning and implementa

Association of gastro-oesophageal reflux and chronic rhinosinusitis: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Data science education in K-12 settings often lacks authentic, hands-on experiences that allow students to meaningfully engage with data practices such as data collection, organization, visualization, and interpretation. Project-based learning provides a pedagogically grounded approach for developing these skills by situating data work within real scientific inquiry. The NIH SEPA-funded WInSTEP-SEPA (Wisconsin Inquiry-based Science Teacher Education Partnership-Science Education Partnership Award) portal was designed to operationalize this approach by embedding data science and dat

Sexual risk-taking among homeless young people in Pakistan.

Homeless young people who engage in sex work are at increased risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and herpes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 homeless young people between the ages of 16 and 25 years from Rawalpindi, Pakistan, to explore how sexual practices were mediated through social and contextual conditions. Participants engaged in sex for a range of reported reasons, most commonly to generate income, but also to build intimacy and to establish intimate partnerships which could bring physical protection and social an
