Segmentation of the Cerebellar Peduncles Using a Random Forest Classifier and a Multi-object Geometric Deformable Model: Application to Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6.

The cerebellar peduncles, comprising the superior cerebellar peduncles (SCPs), the middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP), and the inferior cerebellar peduncles (ICPs), are white matter tracts that connect the cerebellum to other parts of the central nervous system. Methods for automatic segmentation and quantification of the cerebellar peduncles are needed for objectively and efficiently studying their structure and function. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides key information to support this goal, but it remains challenging because the tensors change dramatically in the decussation of the SCPs

A variational framework for joint detection and segmentation of ovarian cancer metastases.

Detection and segmentation of ovarian cancer metastases have great clinical impacts on women's health. However, the random distribution and weak boundaries of metastases significantly complicate this task. This paper presents a variational framework that combines region competition based level set propagation and image matching flow computation to jointly detect and segment metastases. Image matching flow not only detects metastases, but also creates shape priors to reduce over-segmentation. Accordingly, accurate segmentation helps to improve the detection accuracy by separating flow computati

Region-based nasopharyngeal carcinoma lesion segmentation from MRI using clustering- and classification-based methods with learning.

In clinical diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) lesion, clinicians are often required to delineate boundaries of NPC on a number of tumor-bearing magnetic resonance images, which is a tedious and time-consuming procedure highly depending on expertise and experience of clinicians. Computer-aided tumor segmentation methods (either contour-based or region-based) are necessary to alleviate clinicians' workload. For contour-based methods, a minimal user interaction to draw an initial contour inside or outside the tumor lesion for further curve evolution to match the tumor boundary is prefer

Network methods for describing sample relationships in genomic datasets: application to Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Genomic datasets generated by new technologies are increasingly prevalent in disparate areas of biological research. While many studies have sought to characterize relationships among genomic features, commensurate efforts to characterize relationships among biological samples have been less common. Consequently, the full extent of sample variation in genomic studies is often under-appreciated, complicating downstream analytical tasks such as gene co-expression network analysis. RESULTS: Here we demonstrate the use of network methods for characterizing sample relationships in micr

Feed-forward hierarchical model of the ventral visual stream applied to functional brain image classification.

Functional brain imaging is a common tool in monitoring the progression of neurodegenerative and neurological disorders. Identifying functional brain imaging derived features that can accurately detect neurological disease is of primary importance to the medical community. Research in computer vision techniques to identify objects in photographs have reported high accuracies in that domain, but their direct applicability to identifying disease in functional imaging is still under investigation in the medical community. In particular, Serre et al. (: In: IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and P

A pattern-based approach to bowel obstruction in the newborn.

Intestinal obstruction is common in newborns, and the radiologist plays a critical role in the care of these children. Diagnosing and managing the potentially obstructed newborn can be challenging, especially given the myriad underlying pathologies that range from benign to acutely life-threatening. A familiarity with the most common diagnoses is essential, but equally important to the radiologist is a systematic approach to management of the child in this setting. We propose an approach based on the recognition of eight radiographic patterns, five upper gastrointestinal examination (UGI) patt

Fast opposite weight learning rules with application in breast cancer diagnosis.

Classification of breast abnormalities such as masses is a challenging task for radiologists. Computer-aided Diagnosis (CADx) technology may enhance the performance of radiologists by assisting them in classifying patterns into benign and malignant categories. Although Neural Networks (NN) such as Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have drawbacks, namely long training times, a considerable number of CADx systems employ NN-based classifiers. The reason being that they provide high accuracy when they are appropriately trained. In this paper, we introduce three novel learning rules called Opposite Weigh

A novel myoelectric pattern recognition strategy for hand function restoration after incomplete cervical spinal cord injury.

This study presents a novel myoelectric pattern recognition strategy towards restoration of hand function after incomplete cervical spinal cord Injury (SCI). High density surface electromyogram (EMG) signals comprised of 57 channels were recorded from the forearm of nine subjects with incomplete cervical SCI while they tried to perform six different hand grasp patterns. A series of pattern recognition algorithms with different EMG feature sets and classifiers were implemented to identify the intended tasks of each SCI subject. High average overall accuracies (> 97%) were achieved in classifica

Starry sky pattern of fetal liver sonogram as first sign of twin-twin transfusion syndrome.

'Starry sky' liver is one of the most common sonographic patterns in diffuse liver disease. It is characterized by clearly identified portal venules due to diminished parenchymal echogenicity. In advanced cases of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), volume overload is considered the key factor in the pathogenesis of cardiac dysfunction of the recipient twin. When right-sided failure occurs, the liver might show signs of edema and, as in acute hepatitis, the appearance of starry sky might develop. We present a case in which the sonographic appearance of starry sky liver, along with right-

Automatic skin lesion segmentation via iterative stochastic region merging.

An automatic method for segmenting skin lesions in conventional macroscopic images is presented. The images are acquired with conventional cameras, without the use of a dermoscope. Automatic segmentation of skin lesions from macroscopic images is a very challenging problem due to factors such as illumination variations, irregular structural and color variations, the presence of hair, as well as the occurrence of multiple unhealthy skin regions. To address these factors, a novel iterative stochastic region-merging approach is employed to segment the regions corresponding to skin lesions from th

Snakules: a model-based active contour algorithm for the annotation of spicules on mammography.

We have developed a novel, model-based active contour algorithm, termed "snakules", for the annotation of spicules on mammography. At each suspect spiculated mass location that has been identified by either a radiologist or a computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm, we deploy snakules that are converging open-ended active contours also known as snakes. The set of convergent snakules have the ability to deform, grow and adapt to the true spicules in the image, by an attractive process of curve evolution and motion that optimizes the local matching energy. Starting from a natural set of automa

A novel method for blood vessel detection from retinal images.

BACKGROUND: The morphological changes of the retinal blood vessels in retinal images are important indicators for diseases like diabetes, hypertension and glaucoma. Thus the accurate segmentation of blood vessel is of diagnostic value. METHODS: In this paper, we present a novel method to segment retinal blood vessels to overcome the variations in contrast of large and thin vessels. This method uses adaptive local thresholding to produce a binary image then extract large connected components as large vessels. The residual fragments in the binary image including some thin vessel segments (or pi

Computer-aided diagnosis of knee-joint disorders via vibroarthrographic signal analysis: a review.

The knee is the lower-extremity joint that supports nearly the entire weight of the human body. It is susceptible to osteoarthritis and other knee-joint disorders caused by degeneration or loss of articular cartilage. The detection of a knee-joint abnormality at an early stage is important, because it helps increase therapeutic options that may slow down the degenerative process. Imaging-based arthrographic modalities can provide anatomical images of the joint cartilage surfaces, but fail to demonstrate the functional integrity of the cartilage. Knee-joint auscultation, by means of recording t

Counting moles automatically from back images.

Density of moles is a strong predictor of malignant melanoma, therefore, enumeration of moles is often an integral part of many studies that look at malignant melanoma. An automatic method of segmenting and counting moles would help standardize studies, compared with manual counting. We have developed an unsupervised algorithm for segmenting and counting moles from two-dimensional color images of the back torso region, as part of a study to evaluate the effectiveness of sunscreen. The method consists of a new variant of mean shift filtering that forms clusters in the image and removes noise, a

Estimation and comparison of CAD system performance in clinical settings.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems are frequently compared using free-response receiver operating characteristic (FROC) curves. While there are ample statistical methods for comparing FROC curves, when one is interested in comparing the outcomes of 2 CAD systems applied in a typical clinical setting, there is the additional matter of correctly determining the system operating point. This article shows how the effect of the sampling error on determining the correct CAD operating point can be captured. By incorporating this uncertainty, a method is presented that al

Development of a new three-dimensional cranial imaging system.

The development of a new three-dimensional (3D) imaging system designed to obtain a digital image of an infant's cranium is described. This system is intended to replace the manual plaster-casting technique currently used during the process of fabricating cranial remodeling bands. The system uses 18 triangulated digital cameras and the projection of random infrared patterns to capture a 360 degrees image of an infant's cranium instantaneously, including the face and top of the head. Accuracy was calculated by comparing models digitized with this system with the same models digitized with high-

Computer programs for neuroanatomy: three-dimensional reconstruction and analysis of populations of cortical neurons and other bodies with a laminar distribution.

The program is designed for analysis of serial microtome sections containing biological structures (bodies, particles), each of which may be represented as one point. Any subset of sections may quickly be selected for reconstruction. In addition to rotation, translation, scaling etc. two particular features are offered. (1) Section-independent parts of reconstructions may be isolated ("windows") and then reconstructed, analyzed and subdivided, like the parent data. (2) Curved, bandshaped parts may be unfolded, for inspection of distribution pattern, determination of density etc. The program is

Electroencephalographic quantification by time domain analysis in normal 7--15-year-old children.

Automatic EEG analysis was performed on 239 apparently healthy school age children. The children were classed in 3 age groups: (1) average age of 7; (2) average age of 11; (3) average age of 15. A time analysis method, comparable to classical visual analysis, permitted quantification of the records. The mean amplitude, frequency and percentage time for alpha and theta rhythms were determined for each subject for fronto-central and centro-occipital derivations bilaterally. Records were performed during periods of rest with eyes open and eyes closed. During hyperventilation, records were taken w

An image analysis system for cervical cytology automation using nuclear DNA content.

An experimental computer/image analysis system has been used to investigate cytology automation techniques based on nuclear DNA measurement and morphological artefact rejector tests. The system automatically measures and normalizes the integrated optical density of cell nuclei in specially prepared cervical cytology specimens, and selects any objects with abnormally high values for further analysis. These are then analyzed by morphological and densitometric tests designed to eliminate false positive signals caused by non-nuclear artefacts. The coordinates of the remaining abnormal nuclei are r
