The visual magnocellular-dorsal dysfunction in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia impedes Chinese character recognition.

The visual magnocellular-dorsal (M-D) deficit theory of developmental dyslexia (DD) is still highly debated. Many researchers have made great efforts to investigate the relationship between M-D dysfunction and reading disability. Given that visual analysis plays an important role in Chinese reading, the present study tried to examine how the M-D dysfunction affected Chinese character recognition in Chinese children with DD. Sixteen DD children with M-D deficit, fifteen DD children with normal M-D function and twenty-seven age-matched typically developing children participated in this study. A

The influence of artificial scotomas on eye movements during visual search.

PURPOSE: Fixation durations are normally adapted to the difficulty of the foveal analysis task. We examine to what extent artificial central and peripheral visual field defects interfere with this adaptation process. METHODS: Subjects performed a visual search task while their eye movements were registered. The latter were used to drive a real-time gaze-dependent display that was used to create artificial central and peripheral visual field defects. Recorded eye movements were used to determine saccadic amplitude, number of fixations, fixation durations, return saccades, and changes in saccad

Motion and shape perception in cerebral akinetopsia.

Motion cues serve many purposes in primate vision. Consequently, akinetopsia, a defect of movement perception due to cerebral lesions, would be expected to comprise a range of motion-related defects. To address this issue we explored further the perceptual profiles in akinetopsic subject L.M. who has motion perception deficits due to extensive bilateral lesions of the dorsolateral visual association cortex that spare primary visual cortex, area V1. We used several different experimental procedures. Using random-dot motion stimuli, we showed that L.M. can still perceive global coherent motion a

Diagnostic features predicted by deep learning improve human object recognition in simulated prosthetic vision.

Objective. Cortical visual prostheses aim to partially restore vision by electrically stimulating V1. Yet, their effectiveness is constrained by the limited number of simultaneously elicitable phosphenes. Identifying sparse but informative visual features for object recognition is therefore crucial to enable functional prosthetic vision. In this study, we aim to target diagnostic features for object recognition.Approach. We combined a deep learning pipeline with bioplausible phosphene simulation to optimize phosphene placement for object recognition. The phosphene renderings were presented to

From pre-stimulus preparation to the "Aha" burst: Unraveling the dynamics of perceptual insight with multi-method EEG.

How does the brain transform a confusing perceptual input into a sudden "Aha" experience? To investigate the neurocognitive dynamics of perceptual insight, we employed an embedded Chinese character task in which twenty-six eligible participants judged whether a source character contained a previously presented target. Targets were embedded either in a hidden/intersecting manner or in an unhidden/non-intersecting manner, allowing us to compare successful recognition under different restructuring demands. Matched invalid counterparts were also included as control conditions. Behaviorally, the hi

Domain-general and domain-specific neural changes underlying visual expertise.

Visual expertise induces changes in neural processing for many different domains of expertise. However, it is unclear how expertise effects for different domains of expertise are related. In the present fMRI study, we combine large-scale univariate and multi-voxel analyses to contrast the expertise-related neural changes associated with two different domains of expertise, bird expertise (ornithology) and mineral expertise (mineralogy). Results indicated distributed expertise-related neural changes, with effects for both domains of expertise in high-level visual cortex and effects for bird expe

Object recognition in Williams syndrome: uneven ventral stream activation.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder associated with severe visuospatial deficits, relatively strong language skills, heightened social interest, and increased attention to faces. On the basis of the visuospatial deficits, this disorder has been characterized primarily as a deficit of the dorsal stream, the occipitoparietal brain regions that subserve visuospatial processing. However, some evidence indicates that this disorder may also affect the development of the ventral stream, the occipitotemporal cortical regions that subserve face and object recognition. The present studies exami

A cortical area selective for visual processing of the human body.

Despite extensive evidence for regions of human visual cortex that respond selectively to faces, few studies have considered the cortical representation of the appearance of the rest of the human body. We present a series of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies revealing substantial evidence for a distinct cortical region in humans that responds selectively to images of the human body, as compared with a wide range of control stimuli. This region was found in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex in all subjects tested and apparently reflects a specialized neural system for the v

The transposed-word effect persists across text orientations in Chinese.

In speeded grammaticality decision tasks, the transposed-word effect occurs when ungrammatical word sequences created by swapping adjacent words in an otherwise grammatical sentence are harder to reject than control sequences derived from ungrammatical base sentences, providing evidence for flexible word-order processing during reading. Previous research shows that this effect is often attenuated in atypical display formats, including serial word presentation and backward text, especially in RTs. Some accounts interpret this pattern as a shift from parallel processing, in which multiple words

Negative effects of redundant targets.

The visual system can encode many stimuli simultaneously, but there are limits to how well multiple objects can be identified in parallel. At the extreme, some objects might have to be identified serially. The redundant target paradigm is one tool for distinguishing specific parallel and serial models. It compares responses to displays containing one target versus displays containing two targets. The typical result is a positive redundant target effect: faster correct responses to two targets, as predicted by many parallel models. Here, we generalize three standard models to account for respon

Representational momentum beyond the target?

Whether the motion of a target could influence the represented location of another stimulus was examined. In Experiment 1, judged location of a stationary object was displaced in the direction of motion of a subsequent moving target. In Experiment 2, forward displacement of the judged locations of two sequentially presented targets moving along the same path was not influenced by whether the targets moved in the same direction or in opposite directions. In Experiment 3, forward displacement of the judged locations of two simultaneously presented targets moving along different paths was larger

Do picture books affect counting directionality in preliterate children? Developmental course and potential mechanisms.

Why the number line in preliterate children is already consistent with the direction of the script? Here we aimed to 1) show that being read a mirror-printed picture book is able to change lateral biases in counting; 2) trace the development of preliterate biases; and 3) test the role of mental model construction processes. Spanish-speaking 3 and 4 year-olds (N = 155, white, 87 female) carried out a task of counting a row of objects and a task in which they built a toy scene before and after being exposed to a mirror-reversed storybook. The left-to-right or right-to-left directionality of thei

The role of singleton salience in second-order suppression.

To process the various stimuli in the real world effectively, it is essential to suppress salient distractions. Recent studies employing majority search paradigms found that people can suppress the capture of salient color singleton distractors even without knowing their color, which proved that suppressing a salient singleton was not only based on first-order information (e.g., a specific color) but also on second-order features (e.g., a unique color) or global salience information (e.g., a feature singleton). However, it remains unknown whether variations in salience influence the attention

Interpreting the orientation of objects: A cross-disciplinary review.

Is object orientation an inherent aspect of the shape of the object or is it represented separately and bound to the object shape in a similar way to other features, such as colour? This review brings together findings from neuropsychological studies of patients with agnosia for object orientation and experimental studies of object perception in healthy individuals that provide converging evidence of separate processing of object identity and orientation. Individuals with agnosia for object orientation, which typically results from damage to the right parietal lobe, can recognize objects prese

Functionally analogous body- and animacy-responsive areas are present in the dog (Canis familiaris) and human occipito-temporal lobe.

Comparing the neural correlates of socio-cognitive skills across species provides insights into the evolution of the social brain and has revealed face- and body-sensitive regions in the primate temporal lobe. Although from a different lineage, dogs share convergent visuo-cognitive skills with humans and a temporal lobe which evolved independently in carnivorans. We investigated the neural correlates of face and body perception in dogs (N = 15) and humans (N = 40) using functional MRI. Combining univariate and multivariate analysis approaches, we found functionally analogous occipito-temporal

Hemispheric Patterns of Recruitment of Object Processing Regions in Early Alzheimer's Disease: A Study Along the Entire Ventral Stream.

BACKGROUND: Investigation of neural response patterns along the entire network of functionally defined object recognition ventral stream regions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is surprisingly lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate putative functional reorganization along a wide-ranging network of known regions in the ventral visual stream in mild AD. METHODS: Overall we investigated 6 regions of interest (5 of which were not investigated before), in 19 AD patients and 19 controls, in both hemispheres along the ventral visual stream: Fusiform Face Area, Fusiform Body Area, Extrastriate Body

A separable neural code in monkey IT enables perfect CAPTCHA decoding.

Reading distorted letters is easy for us but so challenging for the machine vision that it is used on websites as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart). How does our brain solve this problem? One solution is to have neurons selective for letter combinations but invariant to distortions. Another is for neurons to encode letter distortions and longer strings to enable separable decoding. Here, we provide evidence for the latter possibility using neural recordings in the monkey inferior temporal (IT) cortex. Neural responses to distorted strings were

Task modulates the orthographic and phonological representations in the bilateral ventral Occipitotemporal cortex.

As a key area in word reading, the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex is proposed for abstract orthographic processing, and its middle part has even been labeled as the visual word form area. Because the definition of the VWFA largely varies and the reading task differs across studies, the function of the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex in word reading is continuingly debated on whether this region is specific for orthographic processing or be involved in an interactive framework. By using representational similarity analysis (RSA), this study examined information representation in the

Dissociated face- and word-selective intracerebral responses in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

The extent to which faces and written words share neural circuitry in the human brain is actively debated. Here, we compare face-selective and word-selective responses in a large group of patients (N = 37) implanted with intracerebral electrodes in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). Both face-selective (i.e., significantly different responses to faces vs. non-face visual objects) and word-selective (i.e., significantly different responses to words vs. pseudofonts) neural activity is isolated with frequency-tagging. Critically, this sensitive approach allows to objectively quantify ca

Unique, Shared, and Dominant Brain Activation in Visual Word Form Area and Lateral Occipital Complex during Reading and Picture Naming.

Identifying printed words and pictures concurrently is ubiquitous in daily tasks, and so it is important to consider the extent to which reading words and naming pictures may share a cognitive-neurophysiological functional architecture. Two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments examined whether reading along the left ventral occipitotemporal region (vOT; often referred to as a visual word form area, VWFA) has activation that is overlapping with referent pictures (i.e., both conditions significant and shared, or with one significantly more dominant) or unique (i.e., one condi
