Discrimination, psychological functioning, and substance use among U.S. young adults aged 18-28, 2017.

This study aimed to test whether (a) discrimination is associated with past 30-day/current alcohol, cigarette, e-cigarette, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use among Black and White U.S. adults aged 18-28, (b) psychological distress (PD) and positive well-being (PW) are mediators of the discrimination-substance use relationships, and (c) the associations are moderated by race and sex. Using data from a 2017 U.S. nationally representative survey we conducted multiple-group moderated mediation analyses among 2,192 young adults aged 18-28 (508 Black males, 594 Black females, 533 White

Discrimination, Smoking, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk: A Moderated Mediation Analysis With MESA.

BACKGROUND: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque are reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease risk, and research highlights that racial and ethnic minority individuals generally exhibit higher cIMT and carotid plaque than White individuals. At present, the mechanisms driving these disparities among different racial and ethnic and biological sex groups are poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data came from the baseline examination of MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). A total of 6814 participants aged 45 to 84 years free of clinical cardiovascular diseas

Mental Health and Homelessness in the Community of Madrid (Spain): The Impact of Discrimination and Violence.

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of experiences of violence and discrimination on mental health among people in situations of homelessness (PSH). For this purpose, a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational investigation was conducted by conducting a survey with 603 PSH living in the Community of Madrid (Spain). The results show high levels of mental health impairment, as well as approximately half of the participants having experienced discrimination and violence in the course of their homelessness. Perceived experiences of discrimination are associated with higher levels o

Mental Healthcare Professionals' Own Mental Health Disclosure to their Supervisor: Investigating Barriers and Facilitators, Experiences, and Needs.

PURPOSE: For mental healthcare professionals (MHPs) with mental health issues and illness (MHI), disclosure to a supervisor at work can be a dilemma: it may facilitate support but also involves risks of stigma and discrimination. This study examined barriers and facilitators, experiences, and needs regarding disclosure of MHI to supervisors among MHPs, and compared disclosers and non-disclosers. METHODS: A cross-sectional online questionnaire was completed by 298 MHPs with MHI working in five Dutch community mental healthcare centers. Descriptive analyses summarized disclosure decisions, barr

Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression for Social Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been devoted to framing multiple continuous social variables as a "mixture" for social epidemiologic analysis. We propose using the Bayesian kernel machine regression analytic framework that yields univariate, bivariate, and overall exposure mixture effects. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health, we conducted a Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis to study several individual, social, and structural factors as an exposure mixture and their relationships with psychological distress among individuals with at least one police

Using Drugs or Non-Drugs Alternatives to Alter Mental States in the Online, Virtual Era.

Background: In the 1970s a body of literature was generated advocating the alternatives approach for drug misuse prevention and rehabilitation which encouraged healthy nonchemical behaviors leading to reinforcing moods. Although this behaviorally oriented approach was overshadowed with the popularity of cognitive therapy in the 1980s, many of the recommended alternative behaviors remain embedded in cognitive approaches for drug misuse prevention and rehabilitation. One objective of the present study was to replicate, in part, two studies conducted in the 1970s which examined usage patterns of

Cognitive-attitudinal factors predict CBT-I enrollment willingness in Chinese sleep clinic patients: a knowledge-attitudes-practices survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong evidence for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), uptake remains constrained by poorly understood cognitive, attitudinal, and practical barriers. This study examined determinants of willingness to enroll in sleep improvement programs among adults at risk of sleep disorders-including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and comorbid psychological distress-attending a tertiary sleep clinic in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional knowledge-attitudes-practices survey was conducted among 2,661 adults attending the sleep and behavioral medicine outpatient clinic

Assessment of HIV Knowledge in Correctional Facility Health Care Workers: A Pilot Study of an Educational Intervention.

HIV rates are disproportionately higher in the incarcerated compared to the general population. Unfortunately, HIV sero-positive inmates report perceived discrimination and missed antiretroviral doses. Correctional facility nursing competency in HIV management may mitigate these concerns. Using validated knowledge instruments, the authors measured baseline HIV knowledge in correctional facility nurses from 3 correctional facilities in Alberta, Canada, and quantified changes after a targeted educational workshop. Basic HIV knowledge increased significantly, whereas perceived need for further HI

Auditory Perception of Roughness and Breathiness by Dysphonic Women.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the auditory perception of roughness and breathiness by dysphonic women. METHODS: Twenty-two dysphonic native Brazilian Portuguese women participated in this research. All participants underwent audiological evaluation and laryngeal examination to confirm the diagnosis. During the tests, they recorded the sustained vowel /Ɛ/. A speech-language pathologist performed the auditory-perceptual judgment of voice quality for these vocal samples, categorizing the general degree of vocal deviation (mild, moderate, and severe degree) and the predominant type of deviation (roug

Only human: hostile human norms can reduce legitimization of intergroup discrimination by perpetrators of historical atrocities.

We investigated the effects of salient shared humanity with a benevolent or hostile human norm on perpetrators of historical atrocities. Our findings suggest that a focus on benevolent superordinate humanity enables perpetrators to legitimize intergroup discrimination and preserve existing negative attitudes towards victims. In Expt 1 (N=135), salient shared humanity with a human norm of benevolence and kindness preserved the perceived legitimacy of intergroup inequality, while exposure to a hostile norm of human nature reduced perceived legitimacy. Expt 2 (N=51) replicated the association bet

Racial Discrimination is Associated with Binge-Eating Disorder in Early Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background Racial and ethnic discrimination are known stressors and are associated with negative psychological and physical health outcomes. Previous studies have found relationships between racial/ethnic discrimination and binge-eating disorder (BED), though they have mainly focused on adult populations. The aim of this study was to determine associations between racial/ethnic discrimination and BED in a large, national cohort study of early adolescents. We further sought to explore associations between the racial/ethnic discrimination perpetrator (students, teachers, or other adults) and BED

A study of transgender adults and their non-transgender siblings on demographic characteristics, social support, and experiences of violence.

A national sample of 295 transgender adults and their nontransgender siblings were surveyed about demographics, perceptions of social support, and violence, harassment, and discrimination. Transwomen were older than the other 4 groups. Transwomen, transmen, and genderqueers were more highly educated than nontransgender sisters and nontransgender brothers, but did not have a corresponding higher income. Other demographic differences between groups were found in religion, geographic mobility, relationship status, and sexual orientation. Transgender people were more likely to experience harassmen

[Visual perception and its disorders].

It's the brain and not the eye that decides what is perceived. In spite of this fact, quite a lot is known about the functioning of the eye and the first sections of the optic tract, but little about the actual process of perception. Examination of visual perception and its malfunctions relies therefore on certain hypotheses. Proceeding from the model of functional brain systems, variant functional domains of visual perception can be distinguished. Among the more important of these domains are: digit span, visual discrimination and figure-ground discrimination. Evaluation of these functional d

When Stigma Strikes, Who Bears the Weight? Social Pathways to Psychological Distress in Carers of People With Severe Mental Illness: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Social networks, social support and social isolation are potential pathways through which perceived social stigma links to psychological distress. Yet little is known about this in carers of people with severe mental illness. AIM: To assess the multiple pathways of social networks, social support and social isolation in the relationship between perceived social stigma and psychological distress among carers of people with severe mental illness. METHOD: 328 Chinese carers of people with severe mental illness were recruited in Hunan China. Participants completed the Perceived Dev

Does perceived ostracism contribute to mental health concerns among veterans who have been deployed?

Posttraumatic stress-negative psychological experiences as a result of traumatic stressors-can hinder military veterans' reintegration into society and cause various mental health problems. Veterans need quality social relationships to facilitate reintegration and to cope with posttraumatic stress and related mental health problems; discrimination or other forms of interpersonal rejection can exacerbate these veterans' problems. Ostracism (i.e., being ignored and excluded) is a painful and psychologically distressing experience that may be one factor that contributes to the problems of veteran

The perils of perceived power: The dual-threat model of antisemitism.

Antisemitism, characterized by prejudice, discrimination, and hostility toward Jews, is marked by two enduring paradoxes. First, although people typically defer to powerholders, perceptions of Jews as powerful are associated with disdain rather than deference among antisemites. Second, antisemitism emerges among individuals with opposing ideological worldviews, those who strongly support societal hierarchies and those who vehemently oppose them. To explain these paradoxes, we introduce the dual-threat model of antisemitism, which highlights the central role of perceived Jewish power in fueling

PERCEIVED RACISM AND NEGATIVE AFFECT: ANALYSES OF TRAIT AND STATE MEASURES OF AFFECT IN A COMMUNITY SAMPLE.

Racism is a significant psychosocial stressor that is hypothesized to have negative psychological and physical health consequences. The Reserve Capacity Model (Gallo & Matthews, 2003) suggests that low socioeconomic status may influence health through its effects on negative affect. We extend this model to study the effects of racism, examining the association of lifetime perceived racism to trait and daily negative affect. A multiethnic sample of 362 American-born Black and Latino adults completed the Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire-Community Version (PEDQ-CV). Trait negative af

Temporal frequency discrimination in optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.

The temporal contrast sensitivity function and temporal frequency discrimination have been studied in normals and in 7 cases of multiple sclerosis or optic neuritis. Sinusoidal gratings of two spatial frequencies (0.2 and 2.0 cycles/deg) were used. The abnormalities demonstrated in the patients varied between individuals but overall a picture has emerged of four principal anomalies. The temporal transfer function of the 2 cycles/deg medium spatial frequency grating has a band-pass appearance, whereas it is low-pass in normal subjects (5 out of 8 eyes). The peak of temporal frequency discrimina

Perceptual differences in olfactory fat discrimination are not detected in neural activation.

Olfaction is involved in detecting, identifying, and discriminating dietary fat within foods, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain uncharted. Our functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigated the neural correlates of olfactory fat perception and their association with discrimination ability in a complex food matrix. We measured brain activation resulting from orthonasal exposure to an ecologically relevant fat-related odor source-dairy milk, manipulated to contain 0%, 3.5%, or 14% fat. Twenty-six healthy, normosmic adults underwent olfactory fat content discrimination
