BACKGROUND: Periodontitis affects approximately 10% of the global population, posing a serious threat to tooth retention and quality of life. The disease emerges from bidirectional host-microbiome interactions that can shift from homeostasis to dysbiosis and chronic inflammation, yet conventional single-phenotype analyses cannot resolve pleiotropic loci acting across interrelated periodontal and microbial traits. We aimed to jointly model the shared genetic structure of six periodontitis-related phenotypes and to prioritise pleiotropic loci with translational relevance.

BACKGROUND: Aggregatibacter aphrophilus(A. aphrophilus)is one of the organisms of the HACEK group. Previously reported cases of brain abscesses caused by A. aphrophilus infection have occurred in children with a basis for congenital heart disease, or in adults with a basis for dental disease. Rare cases of brain abscess caused by A. aphrophilus have been reported in adults with congenital heart disease or in patients without dental disease history. Herein we present a rare case of brain abscess caused by A. aphrophilus, who was in association with atrial septal defect for more than 20 years, a

INTRODUCTION: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is considered a major pathogen in localized and generalized aggressive periodontitis. A. actinomycetemcomitans has been found in various extra oral infections and most frequently in endocarditis. We report a patient with multiple brain abscesses due to infection with A. actinomycetemcomitans and review the English language literature related to this subject.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old patient with no underlying medical conditions presented with multiple brain lesions initially thought to be metastatic lesions of a tumour of unknown origin. F

Odontogenic sinusitis is a well-recognized condition and accounts for approximately 10% to 12% of cases of maxillary sinusitis. An odontogenic source should be considered in individuals with symptoms of maxillary sinusitis with a history of odontogenic infection, dentoalveolar surgery, periodontal surgery, or in those resistant to conventional sinusitis therapy. Diagnosis usually requires a thorough dental and clinical evaluation including appropriate radiographs. The most common causes of odontogenic sinusitis include dental abscesses and periodontal disease that had perforated the Schneidari

A considerable portion of the global population is affected by pulpitis and periapical lesions. While the impact of infections caused by various microbes and host effector molecules in pulpal and periapical diseases is widely recognized, disease susceptibility and progression are also influenced by the dynamic interaction between host genetic factors and environmental influences. Apical periodontitis occurs as an inflammatory response to microorganisms present in the root canals of infected teeth. Initially functioning as the body's defense mechanism, this response often progresses to chronic

Inflammation begins as a response of the immune system to an external, harmful stimulus. This stimulus can be chemical, mechanical or bacterial in nature. The inflammatory response is necessary to create optimal conditions for healing. In case of pulpitis, a peri-apical granuloma, peri-coronitis or periodontitis, complaints arise as a result of an inflammatory reaction. With further progression, such as an infiltrate or a submucosal abscess, the bacteria will eventually invade the tissues and develop an infection. Given the high prevalence of dental diseases, oral health care providers are reg

BACKGROUND: Although clinicians generally consider it safe to provide dental care for pregnant women, supporting clinical trial evidence is lacking. This study compares safety outcomes from a trial in which pregnant women received scaling and root planing and other dental treatments.
METHODS: The authors randomly assigned 823 women with periodontitis to receive scaling and root planing, either at 13 to 21 weeks' gestation or up to three months after delivery. They evaluated all subjects for essential dental treatment (EDT) needs, defined as the presence of moderate-to-severe caries or fractur

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare disease of elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) production that leads to hypophosphatemia and impaired mineralization of bone and teeth. The clinical manifestations of XLH include a high prevalence of dental abscesses and periodontal disease, likely driven by poorly formed structures of the dentoalveolar complex, including the alveolar bone, cementum, dentin, and periodontal ligament. Our previous studies have demonstrated that sclerostin antibody (Scl-Ab) treatment improves phosphate homeostasis, and increases long bone mass, strength, and min

Despite the fact that cutaneous sinus tracts of odontogenic origin are well documented, the condition is still commonly misdiagnosed, because chronic periapical periodontitis may be asymptomatic and is rarely open to the skin. A 75-year-old Japanese woman presented to our clinic with the chief complaint of a left cheek skin lesion with mild pain. Physical examination revealed a subcutaneous nodule covered with erythematous skin on her left buccal region. Cultures from the subcutaneous nodule grew Bacteroides species and Peptostreptococcus micros but did not yield acid-fast bacilli, fungi, or A

Treponema denticola is a consensus periodontal pathogen that has recently been associated with endodontic pathology. In this study, the effect of mono-infection of the dental pulp with T. denticola and with polymicrobial "red-complex" organisms (RC) (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and T. denticola) in inducing disseminating infections in wild-type (WT) and severe-combined-immunodeficiency (SCID) mice was analyzed. After 21 days, a high incidence (5/10) of orofacial abscesses was observed in SCID mice mono-infected with T. denticola, whereas abscesses were rare in SCID mice inf

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to report a patient's clinical case who was diagnosed with severe apical abscess and with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) using immunosuppressive drugs and bisphosphonate.
METHODS: A 32-year-old man of black African descent urgently sought dental surgery because of an increase in volume in the right genic region and a nuisance in the region of the lower right second premolar when chewing. After intraoral and radiographic clinical examination, the patient was diagnosed with pulp necrosis and an acute apical abscess. Because he had AIH and was taking corticost

Bioclimatic conditions are thought to have an impact on the frequency of dental abscesses but previous studies have suffered from small patient cohorts, methodological obstacles, and restriction to a single site resulting in limited geographic and meteorological variability. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of environmental temperature and barometric pressure on the frequency of dental abscesses. Three maxillofacial and two dental clinics in Vienna retrospectively provided a total of 19,218 patients with dentoalveolar abscesses who were treated by intraoral incisio

This study was designed to explore the relative expression of DNA methylation machinery genes in periapical granuloma and to assess longitudinal changes in gene expression within the healing group at 6 and 12 months. A total of twenty-seven patients (13 chronic apical periodontitis and 14 chronic apical abscess) underwent surgical endodontic treatment. During surgical endodontic treatment, periapical lesion tissue was collected and used for relative expression analysis of the following DNA methylation machinery genes: DNMT-1, TDG, TET-1, TET-2, and TET-3. These patients were subsequently re-ap

BACKGROUND: Vertebral osteomyelitis can be attributed to many factors including immunosuppression, diabetes, malignancy, collagen disease, periodontal disease, open fractures, and endoscopic procedures. Anaerobic bacteria, such as Veillonella species, are found in the oral cavity and are rarely implicated in the infection. This report describes vertebral osteomyelitis secondary to a dental abscess with positive Veillonella cultures.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 76-year-old man presented to the hospital due to back pain with a four-day history of fever and chills. CT scans revealed several abscesses in

Apical periodontal lesions were produced in the rat molar by exposing the pulp to the oral environment. The natural history of the undisturbed lesion was studied at time intervals ranging from 2 days to 1 year postoperatively. The earliest reactions were usually inflammatory infiltration at the apex. The severity of the lesions was related to the amount of vital pulp still present in the tooth rather than to the time lapse after exposure. After 1 month most pulps has undergone necrosis and the lesions about the apices which followed showed two main types of reaction. In the case of the suppura

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobe and is associated with periodontal disease. This bacterium is exposed to environmental stresses, such as osmotic pressure, temperature shifts, pH shifts, and antimicrobial substances, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), in the human oral cavity. The bacterial two-component system ArcAB modulates gene expression in response to environmental changes, primarily by sensing oxygen pressure in several pathogens belonging to the γ-proteobacteria. It is also known to provide adaptation to ROS stress; however, its functi
