INTRODUCTION: Persons with mild and moderate intellectual disability (MMID) have the right to participate in all aspects of society and be afforded equal opportunities to realise their full potential. However, it is a challenge for persons with MMID to find and maintain employment due to many different barriers. Currently, there is no contextually relevant framework in South Africa that considers the unique employment support needs and accommodation of persons with MMID, which can guide and inform the transition to employment interventions, strategies and national policy directives.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Personal disability identity (PDI) refers to disability self-concept and includes various attitudes toward disability. In this study, we examined whether the PDI attitudes of disability self-worth and personal meaning were predictors of psychosocial functioning.
METHOD/DESIGN: Using hierarchical regression to control for sociodemographic and disability characteristics, we examined the unique contributions of these two PDI attitudes to life satisfaction, anxiety/depression, and general self-efficacy in a sample of 1,203 employed U.S. adults with LD and/or ADHD.
RESULTS: PDI

PURPOSE: Eating and drinking outside the home is important for participation and social inclusion for people with intellectual disability and dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) but is likely to come with additional challenges. This qualitative research aimed to identify the challenges and strategies used by people with intellectual disability and dysphagia and their carers when eating outside the home.
METHOD: This study used a qualitative research design and reflexive researcher stance following an interpretive phenomenological methodology to understand the nature of the phenomenon "support

We evaluated the association between the chronic severe back pain with disability and participation, in U.S. Adults using data from the US 2019 National Health Interview Survey. In our sample of 2,925 adults (weighted n: 20,468,134) who reported having chronic severe back pain, 60% reported mobility disability, 60% had work limitations, 34% were limited for social participation and 16% had self-care limitations. Older age (65+) was associated with mobility difficulties (OR 1.99, 95% CI 1.28,6.09) and work limitation (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.61,3.05). Lower socioeconomic status was associated with in

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with disabilities might face high risk of anxiety, but the specific influencing factors may be different between parents and grandparents. This study is to explore the influencing modifiable factors from personal and environmental dimensions, so as to provide practical reference for effectively preventing and alleviating anxiety of this population.
METHODS: A total of 504 primary caregivers were investigated in Shanghai, China, of which 496 parents and grandparents were included in the analysis. Risk of anxiety was measured by the Generalized Anxiety Disorde

The article presents characteristics of limitations of life activities of the disabled older than able-bodied age due to Parkinson's disease and considering clinical data, stages of illness, severity of disability and disorders of functions of organism. The highest percentage in the structure of life restrictions was taken by restrictions of first, second and third degree related to self-service, movement, labor activity (12.1%, 9.5% and 10.5% respectively). The lowest percentage of restrictions of first, second and third degree related to education, control and communication.

Symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) progress over time causing significant disability. Yet, change in disability over shorter time periods has not been entirely understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the Self-Assessment Disability Scale (SADS) in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) after 2 years of follow-up and compare it with the score observed at baseline. Additionally, we aimed at evaluating association of motor and non-motor PD features at baseline with a higher disability after 2 years of follow-up. A total of 120 consecutive persons with PD, who denied falling in the pas

PURPOSE: We examined AI-related risk perceptions among people with disabilities by distinguishing personal risk from societal risk. We further asked whether people with disabilities perceived themselves as more exposed to AI-related risks than society, a pattern this study terms self-relative pessimism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2023 Digital Divide Survey in South Korea. The analytic sample included 2,200 respondents who self-identified as having disabilities. Linear regression models were used to examine personal risk perception, societal risk perception, and optimis

Walking is a significant transportation method, but the convenience of pedestrian surroundings for individuals with blindness is highly challenging. Pedestrians with blindness familiarize themselves with guidelines in their surroundings, which might be artificial or natural. To overcome these troubles, it is highly significant for them to perceive the features of an environment. Currently, numerous methods like long white canes and GPS are deployed to improve pedestrian walkways for sightless people. So, they can utilize it as the primary assistive device for recognition and also the vital eco

Early prediction of disability progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) remains challenging despite its critical importance for therapeutic decision-making. We present the first systematic evaluation of personalized federated learning (PFL) for 2-year MS disability progression prediction, leveraging multi-center real-world data from over 26,000 patients. While conventional federated learning (FL) enables privacy-aware collaborative modeling, it remains vulnerable to institutional data heterogeneity. PFL overcomes this challenge by adapting shared models to local data distributions without compro

Learning disabilities affect a significant proportion of children worldwide, with far-reaching consequences for their academic, professional, and personal lives. Here we develop digital twins - biologically plausible personalized Deep Neural Networks (pDNNs) - to investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying learning disabilities in children. Our pDNN reproduces behavioral and neural activity patterns observed in affected children, including lower performance accuracy, slower learning rates, neural hyper-excitability, and reduced neural differentiation of numerical problems. Crucial

OBJECTIVE: Previous evidence indicates that scales from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments can measure self-reported posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology and differentiate symptom clusters, including in forensic disability assessments. However, limited research has examined assessment of PTSD symptoms with the MMPI-3, the most recent MMPI instrument. The goal of the current study was to identify the strongest MMPI-3 scale predictors of individual PTSD symptom clusters, measured via self-report.
METHODS: Using a sample of 716 disability cl

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the transformative learning experiences of medical students participating in home visits to persons living with disabilities in rural areas of South Africa, in order to explore the potential of such experiences to shape their beliefs about their professional development and clinical practice.
METHODS: Qualitative data was collected from the students through written reflections and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed thematically using a phenomenological approach guided by Mezirow's theory of transformative learning.
RESULTS: The findings rev

A person convicted of sex offences (PCSO) is confronted with several challenges upon re-entry to the community, often facing difficulties accessing housing and employment, and experiencing stigmatisation, hostility and harassment from community members. Given the importance of community support for successful reintegration, we examined differences in public (N = 117) attitudes toward a PCSO against a child (PCSO-C) with mental illness or intellectual disability compared to a neurotypical PCSO-C in an online survey. At present, differences in attitudes towards these groups has not been explored

Sign language has played a crucial role in the lives of impaired people having hearing and speaking disabilities. They can send messages via hand gesture movement. Arabic Sign Language (ASL) recognition is a very difficult task because of its high complexity and the increasing intraclass similarity. Sign language may be utilized for the communication of sentences, letters, or words using diverse signs of the hands. Such communication helps to bridge the communication gap between people with hearing impairment and other people and also makes it easy for people with hearing impairment to express

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of affective learning on alexithymia, empathy, and attitude toward disabled persons in nursing students.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This prospective, randomized, controlled trial study was implemented among 70 nursing students. Based on transformative learning theory, the affective learning method was applied to the intervention group. Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS), and Attitudes Toward Disabled Person Scale (ATDPS) were administered to both groups.
RESULTS: The intervention group showed a statistically and significantly lower score a

BACKGROUND: Persons with multiple sclerosis are often at higher risk for falling, but clinical disability scales and fall risk questionnaires are subjective and don't provide specific feedback about why an individual is unstable. The purpose of this study was to determine how relationships between trunk and foot acceleration variability relate to physiological impairments, clinical disability scales, and mobility questionnaires in persons with multiple sclerosis.
METHODS: 15 fallers and 25 non-fallers with multiple sclerosis walked on a treadmill at normal walking speed while trunk and foot a

OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of applying natural language processing (NLP) to electronic health records (EHRs) to identify individuals with chronic mobility disability.
DESIGN: We used EHRs from the Research Patient Data Repository, which contains EHRs from a large Massachusetts health care delivery system. This analysis was part of a larger study assessing the effects of disability on diagnosis of colorectal cancer. We applied NLP text extraction software to longitudinal EHRs of colorectal cancer patients to identify persons who use a wheelchair (our indicator of mobility disability for
