Atlas of sodium fluoride PET bone scans: atlas of NaF PET bone scans.

Sodium fluoride (NaF) is a bone-seeking positron-emitting tracer with high sensitivity and specificity for detection of osseous lesions, particularly osteolytic lesions. We believe that NaF positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans can provide a more thorough and conclusive evaluation of bone diseases than conventional Technetium-99m-methylene diphosphonate bone scans. Understanding both normal and pathologic patterns is important for the evaluation and interpretation of these studies. Thus, an atlas of NaF positron emission tomography/computed tomography bone scans dem

[PET/CT: focal lung uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose on PET but no structural alterations on CT].

The combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) in a single device (PET/CT) offers a powerful diagnostic tool that opens up new horizons for imaging diagnosis. In order to correctly interpret PET/CT studies, knowledge of the biodistribution of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), the physiological variants as well as the pitfalls, including artefacts, which may be found, is necessary. We report four cases performed during the follow-up diagnostic context of an oncology study performed with 18F-FDG-PET/CT. In every case, this study showed focal uptake in the lung par

FDG PET and PET/CT monitoring of autoimmune pancreatitis associated with extrapancreatic autoimmune disease.

We report a series of FDG PET findings of a 69-year-old male patient with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) associated with extrapancreatic disease. The first FDG PET revealed diffuse uptake of FDG in AIP and retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF). The second FDG PET after cessation of steroid treatment indicated subsiding of disease activity in AIP, continuous disease activity in RF, and new extrapancreatic lesions, including enlargement of a right salivary gland, nephritis, and lymphadenopathy. The last FDG PET under steroid treatment revealed reduced FDG uptake in the above abnormal FDG uptake lesions.

PET/CT with intravenous contrast can be used for PET attenuation correction in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: If the CT scan of a combined PET/CT study is performed as a full diagnostic quality CT scan including intravenous (IV) contrast agent, the quality of the joint PET/CT procedure is improved and a separate diagnostic CT scan can be avoided. CT with IV contrast can be used for PET attenuation correction, but this may result in a bias in the attenuation factors. The clinical significance of this bias has not been established. Our aim was to perform a prospective clinical study where each patient had CT performed with and without IV contrast agent to establish whether PET/CT with IV contra

A comparative study of 11C-choline PET and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose PET in the evaluation of lung cancer.

The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of 11C-choline positron emission tomography (PET) and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET imaging in the detection of primary lung cancer and mediastinal lymph node metastases. Seventeen patients with histologically proven primary lung cancer were examined with both 11C-choline and FDG PET within a week of each study. Lung cancers were analysed visually and semiquantitatively using the ratio of tumour-to-normal radioactivity (T/N ratio) and standardized uptake value (SUV). Mediastinal lymph node metastases were analysed visually. Alth

Differential diagnosis of thymic tumors using a combination of 11C-methionine PET and FDG PET.

UNLABELLED: We assessed the usefulness of PET studies in making a differential diagnosis of thymic tumors by using 11C-methionine (MET) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). METHODS: We examined 31 patients with thymic tumors, including 14 patients with thymic cancer, 9 with invasive thymoma, 5 with noninvasive thymoma and 3 with thymic cysts. The histological diagnosis was confirmed by either surgery or biopsy. MET PET and FDG PET were performed in 28 and 29 patients, respectively. Both the MET and FDG uptakes were evaluated by the standardized uptake value (SUV). RESULTS: MET uptake was not su

Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Pets of Harris County, Texas, Revealed More Common Pet Infections in Households With Human COVID-19 Cases.

Local health departments can play a critical role in zoonoses surveillance at the human-domestic animal interface, especially when existing public health services and close relationships with community groups can be leveraged. Investigators at Harris County Veterinary Public Health employed a community-based surveillance tool for identifying severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in dogs and cats in June--December 2021. Diagnosis was made using both RT-qPCR testing of oral and nasal swabs and plaque reduction neutralization testing of serum samples. Recruitment

Comparison of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Spike Protein Binding to ACE2 Receptors from Human, Pets, Farm Animals, and Putative Intermediate Hosts.

The emergence of a novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), resulted in a pandemic. Here, we used X-ray structures of human ACE2 bound to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein (S) from SARS-CoV-2 to predict its binding to ACE2 proteins from different animals, including pets, farm animals, and putative intermediate hosts of SARS-CoV-2. Comparing the interaction sites of ACE2 proteins known to serve or not serve as receptors allows the definition of residues important for binding. From the 20 amino acids in ACE2 that contact S, up to 7 can

[Are pets, dog or cat, a risk or a protector factor for the development or exacerbation of asthma? Systematic review of systematic reviews].

BACKGROUND: Preliminary studies have shown conflicting results on the association between exposure to pets (cat or dog) and asthma. Previous scientific evidence has not been clear to determine if avoiding or allowing the exposure to pets could prevent, improve, or worsen the development of asthma and its symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To try to explain the controversial relationship between exposure to pets (dog or cat) and its effect on the development of asthma or the exacerbation of symptoms in both children and adults. METHODS: A standardized search in five electronic databases by an independent r

Alzheimer Disease and the Utility of PET.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and one of the leading causes of death in adults age 65 y or older in the United States. AD presents with symptoms of cognitive impairment that worsen with disease progression, ultimately affecting an individual's functional abilities, independence, and overall health. Historically, treatment has relied on the mitigation of the adverse effects of the disease; however, the recent development of antiamyloid monoclonal antibodies allows for the targeting of pathologic factors that drive the progression of disease. Nuclear medicine has es

PET Imaging in Pulmonary Hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension comprises a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by elevated pulmonary arterial pressures and progressive right ventricular (RV) remodeling, with RV failure as the principal determinant of outcome. This review discusses positron emission tomography (PET) imaging across pulmonary hypertension, with particular emphasis on pulmonary arterial hypertension, in which pulmonary vascular remodeling and RV adaptation are central disease features. Although echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging provide robust assessment of RV structure, function, and fibr

PET in neurotherapeutic discovery and development.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a highly sensitive, quantitative imaging technique that can track sub-nanomolar quantities of positron-emitting radionuclides throughout the body. By incorporating such radionuclides into molecules of interest, we can directly assess their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) characteristics in vivo without changing their physicochemical characteristics or eliciting a pharmacological response. As such, PET imaging has long been used as a tool to aid drug discovery programs from preclinical biomarker validation all the way through to clinical trials.
