[Hearing in advanced age: critical view of so-called presbycusis].

Presbycusis cannot be defined nosologically as an uniform disease. The computed threshold curves of the age dependent high-frequency hearing loss should not conceal the fact that the degree and form of the hearing loss vary greatly within the age groups. The pathological appearances also vary; degenerative changes vary in site and extent and are not limited to the cochlear structures, but are also found in all parts of the auditory system. The etiology of presbycusis can scarcely be attributed to the physiological senile degeneration of cochlear or central nervous structures alone because epid

Calibrated finger rub auditory screening test (CALFRAST).

BACKGROUND: Determination of auditory function is a fundamental part of a complete neurologic examination. Disability from permanent hearing loss is common in the general population. Current bedside auditory tests are unreliable and cumbersome. We evaluated the calibrated finger rub auditory screening test (CALFRAST) as a routine diagnostic tool. METHODS: The sound spectrum and mean peak intensities of standard finger rub were measured, as well as background noise. CALFRAST overlapped the frequency spectrum of normal speech. Patients and companions were recruited from a neurology clinic. With

A comparison of visual and auditory motion processing in human cerebral cortex.

Visual and auditory motion information can be used together to provide complementary information about the movement of objects. To investigate the neural substrates of such cross-modal integration, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activation while subjects performed separate visual and auditory motion discrimination tasks. Areas of unimodal activation included the primary and/or early sensory cortex for each modality plus additional sites extending toward parietal cortex. Areas conjointly activated by both tasks included lateral parietal cortex, lateral frontal co

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on the auditory mismatch negativity response and working memory performance in schizophrenia: a pilot study.

Cognitive impairment has been proposed to be the core feature of schizophrenia (Sz). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive form of brain stimulation which can improve cognitive function in healthy participants and in psychiatric patients with cognitive deficits. tDCS has been shown to improve cognition and hallucination symptoms in Sz, a disorder also associated with marked sensory processing deficits. Recent findings in healthy controls demonstrate that anodal tDCS increases auditory deviance detection, as measured by the brain-based event-related potential, mismatc

Review of salicylate-induced hearing loss, neurotoxicity, tinnitus and neuropathophysiology.

Salicylate's ototoxic properties have been well established, inducing tinnitus and a sensory hearing loss when administered in high doses. Peripherally, acute dosing of salicylate causes frequency dependent reductions in DPOAEs and CAP amplitudes in low (<10 kHz) and high (>20 kHz) frequencies more than mid frequencies (10-20 kHz), which interestingly corresponds to the pitch of behaviourally-matched salicylate-induced tinnitus. Chronic salicylate dosing affects the peripheral system by causing a compensatory temporary enhancement in DPOAE amplitudes and up-regulation of prestin mRNA and prote

Genome-wide linkage scan for loci of musical aptitude in Finnish families: evidence for a major locus at 4q22.

BACKGROUND: Music perception and performance are comprehensive human cognitive functions and thus provide an excellent model system for studying human behaviour and brain function. However, the molecules involved in mediating music perception and performance are so far uncharacterised. OBJECTIVE: To unravel the biological background of music perception, using molecular and statistical genetic approaches. METHODS: 15 Finnish multigenerational families (with a total of 234 family members) were recruited via a nationwide search. The phenotype of all family members was determined using three tes

Do sex differences affect prefrontal cortex associated cognition in schizophrenia?

UNLABELLED: Cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, especially those related to prefrontal cortex (PFC) functions, influence functional outcome. There is evidence for sex differences in cognition in schizophrenia, but the results in the literature are still controversial. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated different modalities of working memory (WM) and executive control (EC), functions that are both associated with the PFC, between sexes in schizophrenic patients and controls. METHODS: We used a battery of neuropsychological tests for assessing auditory, spatial, and visual-matching WM and used a

Auditory filter nonlinearity in mild/moderate hearing impairment.

Sensorineural hearing loss has frequently been shown to result in a loss of frequency selectivity. Less is known about its effects on the level dependence of selectivity that is so prominent a feature of normal hearing. The aim of the present study is to characterize such changes in nonlinearity as manifested in the auditory filter shapes of listeners with mild/moderate hearing impairment. Notched-noise masked thresholds at 2 kHz were measured over a range of stimulus levels in hearing-impaired listeners with losses of 20-50 dB. Growth-of-masking functions for different notch widths are more p

Neural mechanisms of auditory discrimination of long-duration tonal patterns: a neural modeling and fMRI study.

Language perception comprises mechanisms of perception and discrimination of auditory stimuli. An important component of auditory perception and discrimination concerns auditory objects. Many interesting auditory objects in our environment are of relatively long duration; however, the temporal window of integration of auditory cortex neurons processing these objects is very limited. Thus, it is necessary to make active use of short-term memory in order to construct and temporarily store long-duration objects. We sought to understand the mechanisms by which the brain manipulates long-duration t

Event-related potentials in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Twenty-three unmedicated patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were compared with 12 unmedicated patients with social phobia (SP) and 18 age-matched normal controls (C) using a two-tone auditory oddball event-related potentials (ERP) paradigm. The OCD group showed significantly shorter P300 latencies and shorter N200 latencies for target stimuli than the SP and the C groups. The OCD patients also tended to have greater N200 negativity compared with normal controls. However, there were no significant relationships between these ERP abnormalities in OCD patients and the type or sever

The Effect of Cochlear Damage on the Sensitivity to Harmonicity.

OBJECTIVES: A sum of simultaneous pure tones with harmonic relationships (i.e., simple frequency ratios) is normally heard as a single sound, with a single pitch, even when its components are fully resolved in the auditory periphery. This perceptual phenomenon called "harmonic fusion" is thought to play an important role in auditory scene analysis as listeners often have to segregate simultaneous harmonic sounds with different fundamental frequencies. The present study explored the consequences of mild or moderate cochlear hearing loss for the sensitivity to harmonicity and the detection of in

"Measurement" of Tinnitus.

Chronic tinnitus is the persistent sensation of hearing a sound that exists only inside the head. The prevalence of tinnitus in adults in the United States is estimated at 10 to 15%. For about 20% of these individuals the tinnitus is significantly bothersome. Although myriad therapies for tinnitus are offered (often at significant cost), most are not evidence based. Difficulty in the assessment and further development of interventions for tinnitus stems from the limitations of techniques used to evaluate these interventions. Questionnaires are widely available to "measure" (tinnitus can only b

Electromyographic assessment of spasmodic dysphonia patients prior to botulinum toxin injection.

Electromyographic (EMG) evidence of inappropriate muscle activity (IMA) in the cricothyroid (CT) and vocalis (V) (thyroarytenoid) muscles was correlated with clinical voice measures in 32 patients with spasmodic dysphonia (SD). Subjective voice rating and quantified fluency and laryngeal diadochokinesis measures were obtained prior to botulinum toxin (Botox) injection into the V muscles. Pre-Botox EMG was performed using a monopolar needle electrode. Each muscle was sequentially examined at rest, during vocal click, scale, sustained "E" at different pitches, and repeated "E" voicings for brief

Cross-Night Modulation of Change Detection ERPs to Foreign Speech Sound Features During N2 Sleep.

The sleeping brain can discriminate speech sounds, but evidence for cross-night changes in neural responses to foreign speech in adults remains limited. Here, Finnish-speaking adults naïve to tonal languages were exposed during Stage N2 of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep to small and large deviations in tone (pitch contour) embedded in vowel /a/ across four consecutive nights, while electroencephalography was recorded. Event-related potentials (ERPs) P2 and P450 revealed robust change detection responses to tone deviations during sleep, and importantly, P450 amplitude decreased from night

A Smartphone-Based Acoustic Machine Learning Pipeline for Detecting Suicidal Ideation: Case-Control Model Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) among university students is a growing public health concern. Self-report screening can be limited by concealment and delayed disclosure. We evaluated a leakage-resistant, proof-of-concept pipeline to detect SI from standardized smartphone-recorded speech. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to extract acoustic markers from brief smartphone-based reading tasks and develop machine learning models for suicide risk prediction in university students, enabling low-cost, scalable early screening to support campus mental health services. METHODS: Questionnaire data and sp

Middle-latency responses to assess objective thresholds in patients with noise-induced hearing losses and Ménière's disease.

In this study 23 patients with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) referred for medico-legal evaluation and a group of 18 cases with Ménière's disease were evaluated audiologically using the middle-latency response (MLR). Cross-correlation functions were used to assess precisely MLR thresholds in low and middle frequencies. Cross-correlation data obtained from suprathreshold levels to below threshold levels were compared with the normal limits of parameters found at threshold levels, allowing us to determine the true MLR threshold. Our results revealed that this MLR threshold and visual detectio

Speaking in Tones: The role of lexical tones in Chinese-speaking Primary Progressive Aphasia.

UNLABELLED: Two-thirds of the world's languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese, employ pitch variation to convey meaning (lexical tone). Existing diagnostic frameworks for primary progressive aphasia (PPA) have been developed for English speakers, and have not considered the impact of salient language-specific variations, such as tone. This study investigates lexical tone processing in Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking individuals with PPA and examines their neural signatures using structural neuroimaging. METHODS: Seventy-eight native Chinese speakers (54 with PPA; 24 healthy controls) wer
