Chitosan is a naturally occurring compound and is commercially produced from seafood shells. It has been utilized in the induction of the defense system in both pre and post-harvest fruits and vegetables against fungi, bacteria, viruses, and other abiotic stresses. In addition to that, chitosan effectively improves the physiological properties of plants and also enhances the shelf life of post-harvest produces. Moreover, chitosan treatment regulates several genes in plants, particularly the activation of plant defense signaling pathways. That includes the elicitation of phytoalexins and pathog

With the growing interest in sustainable agriculture, there has been a surge in exploration of multitrophic interactions between plants and microbes that can help plants adapt to changing environments and enhance their resilience to climate changes. One such beneficial microbe is Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, an aerobic, nitrogen-fixing endophyte currently being studied because of its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen within plant tissues under aerobic conditions. This endophyte also promotes plant growth through processes like phytohormone production, nutrient solubilization, and improv

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a gaseous signalling molecule that plays an active role in plant growth and stress responses. In this review, we summarise the synthesis and metabolism of H2S, recent progress in H2S research on stress and plant growth, and discuss the modes of action of H2S. Many studies have demonstrated that H2S exhibits a hormetic effect, that suitable concentrations of H2S actively regulate the development of various species through a conserved mechanism. H2S affects multiple growth stages of plants and alleviates oxidative damage, photosynthetic inhibition, and homoeostasis abn

Plant-mediated interactions between pathogenic microorganisms and arthropod herbivores occur when arthropod infestation or pathogen infection changes the shared host plant in ways that affect a subsequent attacker of the opposite type. Interest in such "tripartite" interactions has increased as the ecological and plant physiological framework for understanding and contextualizing them has developed. The outcomes of plant-mediated interactions are variable, and only a few provisional patterns can be identified at present. However, these interactions can have important consequences not only for

UNLABELLED: Endophytic actinomycetes are known to promote plant growth and improve crop nutritional quality through nutrient mobilization and secondary metabolite production. In this study, a multifunctional actinomycete strain was isolated from sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) and identified as Streptomyces griseorubens MEPSL1. Functional assays and genome analysis revealed that MEPSL1 exhibits several plant growth-promoting traits, including nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, indole-3-acetic acid and siderophore production, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase activit

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) frequently stimulates plant growth and is widely assumed to enhance productivity in multispecies communities1,2, yet species responses to eCO2 vary widely with biotic and abiotic context1,3,4. Whether eCO2 relaxes competition or amplifies existing competitive hierarchies, shaping how growth benefits are distributed among species, remains poorly resolved. Here we synthesize data from 19 CO2 enrichment experiments (glasshouse, chamber and field studies), encompassing 97 plant species from grass-dominated ecosystems to quantify how competitive context alters species- and mixtu

Methylglyoxal and glyoxalase function a significant role in plant response to heavy metal stress. We update and discuss the most recent developments of methylglyoxal and glyoxalase in regulating plant response to heavy metal stress. Methylglyoxal (MG), a by-product of several metabolic processes, is created by both enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms. It plays an important role in plant growth and development, signal transduction, and response to heavy metal stress (HMS). Changes in MG content and glyoxalase (GLY) activity under HMS imply that they may be potential biomarkers of plant stres

Compound pollution with cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) is common in nature. The effects of compounded Cd and Zn on the growth and development of Iris pseudacorus in the environment and the plant's potential to remediate heavy metals in the environment remain unclear. In this study, the effects of single and combined Cd and Zn stress on I. pseudacorus growth and the enrichment of heavy metals in I. pseudacorus seedlings were investigated. The results showed that under Cd (160 μM) and Zn (800 μM) stress, plant growth was significantly inhibited and photosynthetic performance was affected. Cd+Zn200 (

Alzheimer's disease is inflating worldwide and is combatted by only a few approved drugs. At best, these drugs treat symptomatic conditions by targeting cholinesterase and N-methyl- D-aspartate receptors. Most of the clinical trials in progress are focused on developing disease-modifying agents that aim at single targets. The 'one drug-one target' approach is failing in the case of Alzheimer's disease due to its labyrinth etiopathogenesis. Traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda use a holistic approach encompassing the legion of medicinal plants exhibiting multimodal activity. Recent advan

Nitrate (NO3-) is not only an essential nutrient but also an important signaling molecule for plant growth. Low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops is causing increasingly serious environmental and ecological problems. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of NO3- regulation in crops is crucial for NUE improvement in agriculture. During the last several years, significant progress has been made in understanding the regulation of NO3- signaling in crops, and some key NO3- signaling factors have been shown to play important roles in NO3- utilization. However, no detailed reviews have yet sum

Beneficial plant-associated bacteria play an important role in promoting growth and preventing disease in plants. The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as biofertilizers or biocontrol agents has become an effective alternative to the use of conventional fertilizers and can increase crop productivity at low cost. Plant-microbe interactions depend upon host plant-secreted signals and a reaction hereon by their associated bacteria. However, the molecular mechanisms of how beneficial bacteria respond to their associated plant-derived signals are not fully understood. Asses

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a saprophytic bacterium that causes melioidosis and is often isolated from rice fields in Southeast Asia, where the infection incidence is high among rice field workers. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between this bacterium and rice through growth experiments where the effect of colonization of domestic rice (Oryza sativa L. cv Amaroo) roots by B. pseudomallei could be observed. When B. pseudomallei was exposed to surface-sterilized seeds, the growth of both the root and the aerosphere was retarded compared to that in controls. The organi

In land plants plastid type differentiation occurs concomitantly with cellular differentiation and the transition from one type to another is under developmental and environmental control. Plastid dynamism is based on a bilateral communication between plastids and nucleus through anterograde and retrograde signaling. Signaling occurs through the interaction with specific phytohormones (abscisic acid, strigolactones, jasmonates, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, ethylene, salicylic acid, cytokinin and auxin). The review is focused on the modulation of plastid capabilities at both transcriptional

There is a lack of information on the rhizosphere of nut-bearing trees where microbial populations can benefit roots and tree growth. The current research aimed at discovering plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the rhizosphere of soil samples from around the root zone of six walnut trees, each of which was considered as a genotype, i.e. 'TT1', 'TT2', 'SS2', 'ZM1', 'Chandler' and 'Haward'. The trees grew in different arid and semiarid regions of Iran and Turkey. The strains were isolated and identified based on different morphological and biochemical markers. Drought-stress toleranc

Cellulosimicrobium sp. JZ28, a root endophytic bacterium from the desert plant Panicum turgidum, was previously identified as a plant growth-promoting bacterium. The genome of JZ28 consists of a 4378,193 bp circular chromosome and contains 3930 CDSs with an average GC content of 74.5%. Whole-genome sequencing analysis revealed that JZ28 was closely related to C. aquatile 3 bp. The genome harbors genes responsible for protection against oxidative, osmotic and salinity stresses, such as the production of osmoprotectants. It also contains genes with a role in the production of volatiles, such as

The ever-present global Atmospheric Electrical Field (AEF) is used by many plant species. There are many natural habitats with electrotropic plants and habitats with no AEF. The plants growing there are not electrotropic, like the plants growing under the canopies of the trees or the Arecibo radio telescope. Examples are given of different plants which belong to one or the other class, and the criteria how to distinguish them. In addition to natural habitat observations, laboratory experiments were run in search of the sensitivity of electrotropic effect to different electric field intensities

Vaccines consisting of transgenic plant-derived antigens offer a new strategy for development of safe, inexpensive vaccines. The vaccine antigens can be eaten with the edible part of the plant or purified from plant material. In phase 1 clinical studies of prototype potato- and corn-based vaccines, these vaccines have been safe and immunogenic without the need for a buffer or vehicle other than the plant cell. Transgenic plant technology is attractive for vaccine development because these vaccines are needle-less, stable, and easy to administer. This chapter examines some early human studies o

Enhancing global food security by increasing the productivity of green revolution varieties of cereals risks increasing the collateral environmental damage produced by inorganic nitrogen fertilizers. Improvements in the efficiency of nitrogen use of crops are therefore essential; however, they require an in-depth understanding of the co-regulatory mechanisms that integrate growth, nitrogen assimilation and carbon fixation. Here we show that the balanced opposing activities and physical interactions of the rice GROWTH-REGULATING FACTOR 4 (GRF4) transcription factor and the growth inhibitor DELL
