Activation of the hamstrings has been discussed as a measure for reducing strain on the ACL during jump landings in alpine skiing. The current study tested the hypothesis that hamstring and quadriceps activation can be voluntarily increased by the athlete. Specifically, two different instructions - to increase hamstring activation or to increase upper-leg co-contraction - were compared to normal landings. Eight members of the German national and junior national squad in freestyle skiing (age 19.6 ± 3.8 years; weight 66.1 ± 13.2 kg; height 172.2 ± 7.7 cm) performed 12 jump landings on a prepare

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to characterize the magnitude and distribution of the total support moment during single-limb drop landings in individuals after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction compared to a control group.
METHODS: Twenty participants after reconstruction and twenty control participants matched on sex, limb dominance and activity level were recruited. Motion analysis was performed during a single-limb drop landing task. Total support moment was determined by summing the internal extensor moments at the ankle, knee, and hip. Each relative joint contribution

Lower extremity injuries have immediate and long-term consequences. Lower extremity movement assessments can assist with identifying individuals at greater injury risk and guide injury prevention interventions. Movement assessments identify similar movement characteristics and evidence suggests large magnitude kinematic relationships exist between movement patterns observed across assessments; however, the magnitude of the relationships for electromyographic (EMG) measures across movement assessments remains largely unknown. This study examined relationships between lower extremity kinematic a

OBJECTIVE: This study introduces a novel methodology combining rapid stretch compound training with blood flow restriction (BFR) to investigate post activation performance enhancement (PAPE) in basketball players, a field that has been predominantly explored for lower limbs. We aimed to assess the efficacy of this combined approach on upper limb muscle performance in athletes.
METHODS: We employed a randomized, self-controlled crossover trial with ten male basketball players. The bench press throw (BPT) served as the primary metric, with players undergoing four interventions post-baseline: (1

INTRODUCTION: Badminton is an overhead sport which requires concurrent upper limb strength, explosive power, coordination, and fast reflexes. The repetitive nature of overhead activities places high mechanical demand on the shoulder complex, leading to the potential for developing neuromuscular deficits and overuse injuries. The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA 11+) FIFA 11 shoulder (FIFA 11+ S) warm-up and injury prevention program (originally developed for upper extremity injury prevention in soccer players), consisting of strengthening, balance, core stabilization and

INTRODUCTION: Lower limb musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are a leading cause of reduced operational capability and medical discharge in UK military personnel. Late-stage rehabilitation (LSR) is critical for restoring function and readiness for return to duty (RTD) yet remains under-represented in research and clinical guidelines. This service evaluation examines current practices, perspectives and challenges among UK Defence rehabilitation practitioners and physical training instructors (PTIs) in delivering LSR and facilitating RTD for lower limb MSKIs.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was

The risk for post-traumatic osteoarthritis is elevated after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), and may be especially high among individuals with aberrant walking mechanics, such as medial tibiofemoral joint underloading 6 months postoperatively. Rehabilitation training programs have been proposed as one strategy to address aberrant gait mechanics. We developed the anterior cruciate ligament specialized post-operative return-to-sports (ACL-SPORTS) randomized control trial to test the effect of 10 post-operative training sessions consisting of strength, agility, plyometric, and s

BACKGROUND: Kinetic and kinematic side-to-side limb asymmetries can increase after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Limb stiffness asymmetry has not been previously explored.
HYPOTHESIS: Athletes with ACLR will exhibit greater asymmetry in limb stiffness, peak eccentric joint power, and eccentric joint work compared with asymptomatic controls during landing.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4.
METHODS: Forty athletes with 5.9 ± 1.4 months removed from ACLR and 40 asymptomatic athletes completed 7 stop-jumps (SJs) during a single session. Three-dim

The purpose was to determine the impact of both cognitive constraint and neuromuscular fatigue on landing biomechanics in healthy and chronic ankle instability (CAI) participants. Twenty-three male volunteers (13 Control and 10 CAI) performed a single-leg landing task before and immediately after a fatiguing exercise with and without cognitive constraints. Ground Reaction Force (GRF) and Time to Stabilization (TTS) were determined at landing in vertical, anteroposterior (ap) and mediolateral (ml) axes using a force plate. Three-dimensional movements of the hip, knee and ankle were recorded dur

CONTEXT: The Lower-Extremity Functional Test (LEFT) has been used to assess readiness to return to sport after a lower-extremity injury. Current recommendations suggest that women should complete the LEFT in 135 s (average; range 120-150 s) and men should complete the test in 100 s (average; range 90-125 s). However, these estimates are based on limited data and may not be reflective of college athletes. Thus, additional assessment, including normative data, of the LEFT in sport populations is warranted.
OBJECTIVE: To examine LEFT times based on descriptive information and off-season training

Field-based screening methods have a limited capacity to identify high-risk postures during netball-specific landings associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. This study determined the biomechanical relationship between a single-leg squat and netball-specific leap landing, to examine the utility of including a single-leg squat within netball-specific ACL injury risk screening. Thirty-two female netballers performed single-leg squat and netball-specific leap landing tasks, during which three-dimensional (3D) kinematic/kinetic data were collected. One-dimensional statistical pa

CONTEXT: Of the individuals able to return to sport participation after an anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) injury, up to 25% will experience a second ACL injury. This population may be more sensitive to hormonal fluctuations, which may explain this high rate of second injury.
OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in 3-dimensional hip and knee kinematics and kinetics during a jump landing and to examine knee laxity across the menstrual cycle in women with histories of unilateral noncontact ACL injury.
DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
SETTING: Laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric landing kinetics 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are associated with higher risk of second anterior cruciate ligament injury. Little is known about landing kinetics after ACLR with an all-soft tissue quadriceps tendon (QT) autograft despite its increasingly common use in young, active patients.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare landing kinetics during a bilateral drop vertical jump (DVJ) 6 months after ACLR in participants who had undergone primary ACLR with a QT or bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autograft. The

The effects of 4 mg·kg-1 caffeine ingestion on strength and power were investigated for the first time, in resistance-trained females during the early follicular phase utilizing a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Fifteen females (29.8 ± 4.0 years, 63.8 ± 5.5 kg [mean ± SD]) ingested caffeine or placebo 60 minutes before completing a test battery separated by 72 hours. One-repetition maximum (1RM), repetitions to failure (RTF) at 60% of 1RM, was assessed in the squat and bench press. Maximal voluntary contraction torque (MVC) and rate of force development (RFD) we

BACKGROUND: Reinjury rates and suboptimal outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) may be influenced by reduced psychological readiness to return to sport (RTS) and asymmetries in quadriceps strength and jump-landing biomechanics.
HYPOTHESES: ACL-Return to Sport after injury (ACL-RSI) scores, quadriceps performance, and jump landing biomechanics would be significantly associated; the ACLR group would show lower ACL-RSI scores, lower quadriceps peak torque (QuadPT) and rate of torque development (RTD), and different peak knee abduction and extension angles/moments

Although most ACL injury prevention programmes encourage greater hip and knee flexion during landing, it remains unknown how this technique influences tibiofemoral joint forces. We examined whether a landing strategy utilising greater hip and knee flexion decreases tibiofemoral anterior shear and compression. Twelve healthy women (25.9 ± 3.5 years) performed a drop-jump task before and after a training session (10-15 min) that emphasised greater hip and knee flexion. Peak tibiofemoral anterior shear and compressive forces were calculated using an electromyography (EMG)-driven knee model that i

The aim of this study was to establish alterations in vertical and lower-limb joint stiffness following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). 127 male patients 8-10 months post-ACLR and 45 non-injured controls performed unilateral and bilateral drop jumps, and cutting, while ground reaction forces (GRFs) and 3D kinematics were recorded. Stiffness and changes in vertical GRF were lower in ACLR patients during bilateral drop jumps compared to non-injured controls. ACLR patients also displayed lower knee stiffness in the bilateral drop jumps (d=-0.91, p < 0.001 and d = 0.53, p < 0.001
