Birth outcomes of patients with isolated anorectal malformations: A population-based case-control study.

In most patients affected by isolated anorectal malformation (IARM) the etiology is largely unknown. Thus, the aim of our project was to analyze possible risk factors for IARM. In the first step, birth outcomes of cases with IARM were analyzed on the basis of maternal socio-demographic variables, and these data are presented in this paper. Gestational age at delivery, birthweight, preterm birth, low birthweight and small for gestational age of cases with IARM were evaluated in the function of maternal age, birth/pregnancy order, marital and employment status of mothers in the population-based

Level of neurotoxic metals in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A population-based case-control study.

The association between exposure to toxic metals and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was explored in a population-based case-control study in the Sardinia island (Italy), a region characterized by elevated rates of ALS cases. In 34 patients with ALS (mean age, 62 ± 10 years) and 30 controls (mean age, 65 ± 11 years), Al, Cd, Hg, Mn and Pb were determined in blood, hair and urine by sector field inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Results indicated that, in blood, concentrations of Al (p=0.045) and Pb were higher (p=0.026) in ALS patients than in control subjects. In hair, a depletion of

Case-control association between CCT-associated variants and keratoconus in a Saudi Arabian population.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is the most common primary ectatic disease of the cornea and a major indication for corneal transplant. To date, limited KC-associated-risk loci have been identified. Association has recently been suggested between KC and 8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genomic regions of FNDC3B, COL4A3, MPDZ-NF1B, RXRA-COL5A1, LCN12-PTGDS, FOXO1, and BANP-ZNF469. These SNPs are associated with central corneal thickness (CCT), a known risk factor to KC. We are questioning whether these SNPs are significantly associated with KC in a Saudi Arabian population. The stud

Air Pollution and the Risk of Cardiac Defects: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

Previous epidemiologic studies have assessed the role of the exposure to ambient air pollution in the development of cardiac birth defects, but they have provided somewhat inconsistent results. To assess the associations between exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of cardiac defects, a population-based case-control study was conducted using 1087 cases of cardiac defects and a random sample of 10,870 controls from 1,533,748 Taiwanese newborns in 2001 to 2007.Logistic regression was performed to calculate odds ratios for 10 ppb increases in O3 and 10 μg/m increases in PM10. Placental abruption and subsequent risk of pre-eclampsia: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia and placental abruption may share a common pathophysiologic mechanism, namely, uteroplacental ischaemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between placental abruption and risk of pre-eclampsia in a subsequent pregnancy, and to determine whether the association differs by the gestational age at the time of abruption. METHODS: A nested case-control study among multiparous women in the Medical Birth Register of Finland from 1996-2010 was conducted. Cases of pre-eclampsia (n = 6487) and frequency matched controls (n = 25,948) were linked to the Hos

Determinants of mortality from severe dengue in Brazil: a population-based case-control study.

Although increases in severity of mortality from dengue infection have been observed in Brazil, their determinants are not fully known. A case-control study was conducted by using the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, including patients with severe dengue during 2000-2005. Cases were defined as patients that died and controls were those who survived. Hierarchical multivariate logistic regression was performed. During the study period, there were 12,321 severe cases of dengue and 1,062 deaths. Factors independently associated with death included age ≥ 50 years (odds ratio [OR] =

A population-based case-control study of aetiological factors associated with vulval lichen sclerosus.

We aimed to investigate the association between possible aetiological factors and the risk of developing vulval lichen sclerosus (VLS). A population-based case-control questionnaire study was performed comparing women with a diagnosis of VLS (n= 92), with those attending a general gynaecology clinic with no known anogenital dermatosis (n= 66). After adjustment for confounders, factors associated with VLS included a family history of diabetes mellitus (OR= 7.0, p= 0.012) and previous pelvic surgery (OR= 4.75, p= 0.007). The use of barrier and progesterone only methods of contraception (OR= 0.19

Risk factors for post-polio syndrome among an Italian population: a case-control study.

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a clinical syndrome of new weakness, fatigue and musculoskeletal pain occurring in a variable proportion of polio survivors decades after acute disease. To date, several risk factors for PPS development have been reported, although the etiology of this disorder remains elusive. Using a case-control design, we aimed to assess risk indicators for PPS in a group of Italian polio survivors. Subjects with prior poliomyelitis attending the rehabilitation hospital of Malcesine, Italy, were the target population. Patients with PPS, diagnosed according to the European Feder

Homocysteine levels and the metabolic syndrome in a Mediterranean population: a case-control study.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HH) and metabolic syndrome (MS) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. However, whether there is a link between MS or its components and homocysteine levels in a population without cardiovascular disease is not well established. We conducted a case-control study in 61 MS patients (41 males, 20 females, aged 51 ± 11 years) and in 98 controls without MS (59 males, 39 females, aged 50 ± 10 years) to ascertain the association between MS and HH, and with inflammatory markers. MS was classified according to the updated ATPIII criteria [17]. No differences in homocys

Radiographic findings in the diagnosis of pediatric ileocolic intussusception: comparison to a control population.

Several previous studies have evaluated the usefulness of plain abdominal radiographs for the diagnosis of pediatric intussusception, although investigation of the most specific clues to diagnose intussusception has not been studied alone. The 3 most specific findings of intussusception include intraluminal mass or intussusceptum, nonvisualized air-filled cecum, and obscured liver margin or right upper-quadrant mass. In this study, a retrospective review of 73 known cases of intussusception with age- and sex-matched controls was performed. The cases were reviewed by 2 blinded, board-certified

Constitutive telomere length and gastric cancer risk: case-control analysis in Chinese Han population.

The shortening of telomeres may result in chromosome instability and thus promote tumorigenesis. Previous studies have demonstrated clear involvement of telomere shortening in the carcinogenesis of several malignancies. However, the association between constitutive telomere shortening and gastric cancer development has yet to be established. Therefore, in the present study, we measured average telomere length using quantitative real-time PCR in peripheral blood lymphocytes from a gastric cancer (GC) case-control study consisting of 396 cases and 378 controls. The results showed that GC patient

Global tuberculosis trends: a reflection of changes in tuberculosis control or in population health?

BACKGROUND: Many international organizations are advocating for new funds for tuberculosis (TB) specific interventions. Although this approach should help reduce TB incidence, improvements in population health may also be important. We have analyzed the association between changes in population health and health service indicators, and concomitant changes in TB incidence between 1990 and 2005. METHODS: Country level data on population health and health services, economic and epidemiologic indicators were obtained for 165 countries. Regression methods were used to estimate the association of c
