Evolving dermatological complaints following the 2023 Turkey and Syria earthquake: insights from a disaster-affected region.

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, significantly impact public health, including dermatological conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the dermatological complaints of patients who presented to the dermatology outpatient clinic of Hatay Hassa State Hospital following the February 2023 Turkey and Syria earthquake. This retrospective descriptive study analyzed dermatological complaints between April 2023 and January 2024. Patients were categorized into three time periods: Group 1 (April-June 2023), Group 2 (July-September 2023), and Group 3 (October 2023-January 2024). Complaints were cla

Immunoglobulin G N-glycosylation remodeling in viral infections: immunomodulatory roles and potential biomarker implications.

The glycosylation of Immunoglobulin G (IgG), a complex post-translational modification, is essential for the structure and function of IgG. The varying affinities of different IgG N-glycans for Fcγ receptors can influence inflammatory responses, including antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), and antibody-dependent cell phagocytosis (ADCP). Existing research indicates a correlation between IgG N-glycosylation and a range of diseases, such as autoimmune disorders, neurologic diseases, and cancer. Persistent and emerging viral infections p

Save or Remove the Accessory Spleen in Patient Candidates to Splenectomy for Lymphoproliferative Disorders: Rational and Literature Review.

Sparing or removing the accessory spleen (AS) in patients undergoing diagnostic splenectomy for lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) is an unsolved issue rarely considered. Usually, a healthy AS can be preserved. Reporting a case of our own, this paper aims to review existing literature and propose a tailored approach. A 59-year-old woman presented with unexplained anemia. A FDG-PET-CT scan revealed splenomegaly and two hypermetabolic splenic nodules, pathological upper and lower diaphragmatic lymph nodes, and a non-FDG-avid AS around splenic hilum. The patient underwent diagnostic splenectomy

Diagnosis and management of Lyme neuroborreliosis.

The nervous system is involved in 10-15% of patients infected with B. burgdorferi, B. afzelii and B. garinii. This review will address widespread misconceptions about the clinical phenomenology, diagnostic approach and response to treatment of neuroborreliosis. Areas covered: Improvements in diagnostic testing have allowed better definition of the clinical spectrum of neuroborreliosis, with lymphocytic meningitis and uni- or multifocal inflammation of peripheral/cranial nerves predominating. Despite widespread concern that post-treatment cognitive/behavioral symptoms might be attributable to p

[Post-partum cardiomyopathy: medical aspects, role of heart transplantation].

The incidence of post-partum cardiomyopathies (PPCM) represents 5% of all cardiomyopathies and 10-13% of cardiomyopathies in women. The outcome of PPCM may be: a) death in the acute phase, b) evolution to chronic myocardial disease or c) complete recovery, in which PPCM differs from dilated cardiomyopathy. Another difference is that PPCM may not recur in subsequent pregnancies. The aetiology and pathogenesis of PPCM are still unknown. Infectious diseases, nutritional disorders have been reported but they do not account for the majority of cases. Immune responses to the foreign tissue of the pl

Transgenic mouse-derived human monoclonal antibodies targeting EBV gp350 and gp42 provide basis for therapeutic development.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) causes infectious mononucleosis and contributes to neurodegenerative disorders and malignancies, particularly in immune-compromised hosts. Transplant patients face high risk of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, a life-threatening EBV-driven lymphoma. There are no EBV-specific vaccines or treatments; however, neutralizing antibodies against EBV glycoproteins may offer utility as therapeutic agents. EBV entry into B cells involves gp350, which binds complement receptors, and gp42, which engages HLA class II to trigger fusion. Most existing monoclonal antibodie

Early diagnosis of negative-pressure pulmonary edema presenting as diffuse alveolar hemorrhage using lung ultrasonography -A case report.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur due to a variety of disorders. Hence, rapid diagnosis and prompt initiation of appropriate treatment are imperative. CASES: A 55-year-old woman with a deep neck infection underwent emergent tonsillectomy. General anesthesia and surgery proceeded uneventfully. Upon transfer to the post-anesthesia care unit, ongoing respiratory distress and occasional expectoration of blood-tinged sputum were noted. Lung ultrasonography (LUS) revealed multiple B-profiles and irregular pleural lines with subp

Optic neuropathy in imaging.

The aim of this work is to provide a diagnostic approach to the potential causes of optic neuropathy, focusing on the radiological findings associated with this pathology. Various etiologies have been identified, including inflammatory and demyelinating optic neuritis, developmental and hereditary diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, infectious conditions, post-traumatic causes, ischemic optic neuropathy (with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy being the most common form), and neoplastic etiologies. Optical coherence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging play a fundamental role in the di

[Early onset Epstein-Barr virus-negative diffuse large B cell lymphoma after bilateral lung transplantation: a case report].

Lymphoma after solid organ transplantation is one of the manifestations of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders(PTLD). Here we reported a 39-year-old male patient presented with intermittent fever, markedly elevated level of peripheral blood lymphocytes and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), rapid decrease in hemoglobin and platelet count ten months after bilateral lung transplantation. After systematic evaluation, the patient excluded infectious diseases. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) revealed diffuse increasing of standard uptake value in bones throughout the bo

Infectious profiles in pediatric anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis.

Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor autoimmune encephalitis (NMDAR AE) is an antibody-mediated neurological disorder that may be caused by post-herpes simplex virus-1 meningoencephalitis (HSV ME) and ovarian teratomas, although most pediatric cases are idiopathic. We sought to evaluate if other infections precede NMDAR AE by conducting a single-center, retrospective, case-control study of 86 pediatric cases presenting to Texas Children's Hospital between 2006 and 2022. HSV ME (HSV-1 and HSV-2) was a significantly more common preceding infection in the experimental group compared to control pati

Optic atrophy in children: Current causes and diagnostic approach.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Optic atrophy is one of the leading causes of sight impairment in children. It frequently poses a diagnostic challenge, as it can be caused by many ocular and systemic conditions. We aimed to determine the current causes of optic atrophy at our centre and to describe the use of investigations, including molecular genetic testing. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of children with optic atrophy seen at Moorfields Eye Hospital between 2010 and 2015. We recorded demographic data, reason for referral, history, investigations and diagnosis. RESULTS: We studied 143 cases ag

[Post-COVID-19 syndrome].

In the aftermath of acute infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a large number of symptoms persist or appear, constituting a real syndrome called "long COVID-19" or "post-COVID- 19" or "post-acute COVID-19 syndrome". Its incidence is very high, half of patients showing at least one symptom at 4-6 months after Coronarovirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19). They can affect many organs. The most common symptom is persistent fatigue, similar to that seen after other viral infections. Radiological pulmonary sequelae are relatively rare and not extensive

Spontaneous and experimentally induced lesions in NOD-scid gamma and other NOD-derived mouse strains.

Immunodeficient mice, particularly the NOD.Cg-PrkdcscidIl2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ (NSG) strain and other non-obese diabetic (NOD)-derived lines are widely used in biomedical research due to their profound immunosuppression, which enables stable engraftment of human cells and tissues with minimal rejection. Despite their broad utility, these models exhibit unique immunologic and anatomic features and are predisposed to infectious and noninfectious diseases that may confound experimental outcomes and limit translational relevance. This review summarizes current knowledge on spontaneous, infectious, and exp

Pro-inflammatory agents released by pathogens, dying host cells, and neutrophils act synergistically to destroy host tissues: a working hypothesis.

We postulate that the extensive cell and tissue damage inflicted by many infectious, inflammatory and post-inflammatory episodes is an enled result of a synergism among the invading microbial agents, host neutrophils and dead and dying cells in the nidus. Microbial toxins and other metabolites along with the plethora of pro-inflammatory agents released from activated neutrophils massively recruited to the infectious sites and high levels of cationic histones, other cationic peptides, proteinases and Th1 cytokines released from activated polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) and from necrotized

Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome: Current Perspectives.

Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) features a heterogeneous constellation of acute obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating restriction, cognitive, behavioral and/or affective symptoms, often followed by a chronic course with cognitive deterioration. An immune-mediated etiology is advocated in which the CNS is hit by different pathogen-driven (auto)immune responses. This narrative review focused on recent clinical (ie, diagnostic criteria, pre-existing neurodevelopmental disorders, neuroimaging) and pathophysiological (ie, CSF, serum, genetic and autoimmune findings) asp

Structured, expert-informed selection and harmonization of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in a German multicenter network: the post-COVID syndrome use case.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provide subjective information on symptoms, functional ability or quality of life. In post-COVID syndrome (PCS), lacking clear diagnostic criteria or biomarkers, PROMs enable a differentiated assessment of disease course and treatment effects. Within a multicenter research project (EMOPROM LCN), a structured selection process for PROMs was conducted to reach consensus on a validated PROMs battery for PCS, suitable for studies and clinical care, and transferable to other complex conditions. METHODS: An interdisciplinary committee identified

The lung microbiome in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: immune interactions, clinical consequences, and emerging interventions.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) offers curative potential for hematologic malignancies and immune disorders, yet pulmonary complications remain major contributors to non-relapse morbidity and mortality. Traditionally attributed to immune suppression and graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), these complications are increasingly recognized to involve disruption of pulmonary microbial communities. A growing body of clinical and experimental evidence indicates that HSCT-associated perturbations in the lung microbiome, driven by conditioning, antimicrobials, immune injury, and infection,

Associations between self-reported symptoms of prenatal maternal infection and post-traumatic stress disorder in offspring: evidence from a prospective birth cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Consistent evidence has linked a range of prenatal maternal infections with psychotic disorders in later life. However, the potential for this exposure to impact more common disorders requires further investigation. METHODS: Participants came from the Mater University Study of pregnancy, a longitudinal, pre-birth cohort study which recruited pregnant mothers from a Brisbane hospital between 1981 and 1984. At age 21, 2439 offspring completed the CIDI-Auto. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate associations of self-reported symptoms of prenatal infection with a ran

Tracking Self-reported Symptoms and Medical Conditions on Social Media During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Infodemiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Harnessing health-related data posted on social media in real time can offer insights into how the pandemic impacts the mental health and general well-being of individuals and populations over time. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to obtain information on symptoms and medical conditions self-reported by non-Twitter social media users during the COVID-19 pandemic, to determine how discussion of these symptoms and medical conditions changed over time, and to identify correlations between frequency of the top 5 commonly mentioned symptoms post and daily COVID-19 statistics (new cases, ne
