Visualizing the entire cortical myelination pattern in marmosets with magnetic resonance imaging.

Myeloarchitecture, the pattern of myelin density across the cerebral cortex, has long been visualized in histological sections to identify distinct anatomical areas of the cortex. In humans, two-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to visualize myeloarchitecture in select areas of the cortex, such as the stripe of Gennari in the primary visual cortex and Heschl's gyrus in the primary auditory cortex. Here, we investigated the use of MRI contrast based on longitudinal relaxation time (T(1)) to visualize myeloarchitecture in vivo over the entire cortex of the common ma

Spatio-temporal distribution of brain activity associated with audio-visually congruent and incongruent speech and the McGurk Effect.

INTRODUCTION: Spatio-temporal distributions of cortical activity to audio-visual presentations of meaningless vowel-consonant-vowels and the effects of audio-visual congruence/incongruence, with emphasis on the McGurk effect, were studied. The McGurk effect occurs when a clearly audible syllable with one consonant, is presented simultaneously with a visual presentation of a face articulating a syllable with a different consonant and the resulting percept is a syllable with a consonant other than the auditorily presented one. METHODS: Twenty subjects listened to pairs of audio-visually congrue

NrCAM deletion causes topographic mistargeting of thalamocortical axons to the visual cortex and disrupts visual acuity.

NrCAM is a neural cell adhesion molecule of the L1 family that has been linked to autism spectrum disorders, a disease spectrum in which abnormal thalamocortical connectivity may contribute to visual processing defects. Here we show that NrCAM interaction with neuropilin-2 (Npn-2) is critical for semaphorin 3F (Sema3F)-induced guidance of thalamocortical axon subpopulations at the ventral telencephalon (VTe), an intermediate target for thalamic axon sorting. Genetic deletion of NrCAM or Npn-2 caused contingents of embryonic thalamic axons to misproject caudally in the VTe. The resultant thalam

Impact of chiasma opticum malformations on the organization of the human ventral visual cortex.

Congenital malformations of the optic chiasm, such as enhanced and reduced crossing of the optic nerve fibers, are evident in albinism and achiasma, respectively. In early visual cortex the resulting additional visual input from the ipsilateral visual hemifield is superimposed onto the normal retinotopic representation of the contralateral visual field, which is likely due to conservative geniculo-striate projections. Counterintuitively, this organization in early visual cortex does not have profound consequences on visual function. Here we ask, whether higher stages of visual processing provi

Quality Assessment of DIBR-Synthesized Views Based on Sparsity of Difference of Closings and Difference of Gaussians.

Images synthesized using depth-image-based-rendering (DIBR) techniques may suffer from complex structural distortions. The goal of the primary visual cortex and other parts of brain is to reduce redundancies of input visual signal in order to discover the intrinsic image structure, and thus create sparse image representation. Human visual system (HVS) treats images on several scales and several levels of resolution when perceiving the visual scene. With an attempt to emulate the properties of HVS, we have designed the no-reference model for the quality assessment of DIBR-synthesized views. To

Balanced Enhancements of Synaptic Excitation and Inhibition Underlie Developmental Maturation of Receptive Fields in the Mouse Visual Cortex.

Neurons in the developing visual cortex undergo progressive functional maturation as indicated by the refinement of their visual feature selectivity. However, changes of the synaptic architecture underlying the maturation of spatial visual receptive fields (RFs) per se remain largely unclear. Here, loose-patch as well as single-unit recordings in layer 4 of mouse primary visual cortex (V1) of both sexes revealed that RF development following an eye-opening period is marked by an increased proportion of cortical neurons with spatially defined RFs, together with the increased signal-to-noise rat

Statokinetic Dissociation (Riddoch Phenomenon) in a Patient with Homonymous Hemianopsia as the First Sign of Posterior Cortical Atrophy.

We report a 60-year-old woman with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) who presented with left homonymous hemianopsia persisting for 5 years; the patient's condition was observed using static, but not kinetic, perimetry. This statokinetic dissociation of hemianopsia, which is often called Riddoch syndrome, might have been caused by a dysfunction of the right primary visual and visual association cortices, representing a functional imbalance within a disturbed visual cortex. In patients with PCA and visual field defects, both static and kinetic perimetry may be useful for understanding the extent

Flash evoked cortical and subcortical potentials in neuro-ophthalmology.

Visual evoked cortical and sub-cortical potentials are complementary to the electroretinogram in neuro-ophthalmology. By combining monocular stimulation with recordings from over the visual cortex of each cerebral hemisphere it is possible to accurately locate lesions which are both pre and post chiasmal. Chiasmal lesions can also be correctly identified using these techniques. The visual evoked sub-cortical potential, probably arising from a lateral geniculate or tectal site allows further post chiasmal variation. Flash and pattern reversal stimulation provide different information about the

Neural representations of the perception of handwritten digits and visual objects from a convolutional neural network compared to humans.

We investigated neural representations for visual perception of 10 handwritten digits and six visual objects from a convolutional neural network (CNN) and humans using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Once our CNN model was fine-tuned using a pre-trained VGG16 model to recognize the visual stimuli from the digit and object categories, representational similarity analysis (RSA) was conducted using neural activations from fMRI and feature representations from the CNN model across all 16 classes. The encoded neural representation of the CNN model exhibited the hierarchical topography

Regional susceptibility of PV interneurons in an hAPP-KI mouse model of Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Early-stage Alzheimer's pathology correlates with disrupted neuronal excitability, which can drive network and cognitive dysfunction even prior to neurodegeneration. However, the emergence and extent of these changes may vary by brain region and cell types situated in those regions. Here we aimed to investigate the effects of AD pathology on different neuron subtypes in both the entorhinal cortex, a region with enhanced pathology in early AD, and the primary visual cortex, a relatively unaffected region in early-stage AD. We designed and employed a semi-automated patch clamp electrophysiology

Cortical and subcortical brain atrophy in Parkinson's disease with visual hallucination.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the cortical and subcortical brain structures in Parkinson's disease (PD) with visual hallucination (VH), and to elucidate the association between the proposed hypothesis of VH in PD and regional brain volume changes. METHODS: We used 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to investigate the brain structures of PD patients with VH (PD-VH; n = 13) and PD patients without VH (PD-C; n = 13). RESULTS: The PD-VH patients showed significant cortical atrophy compared to the PD-C patients in the bilateral dorsolatera

Visual feedback alters force control and functional activity in the visuomotor network after stroke.

Modulating visual feedback may be a viable option to improve motor function after stroke, but the neurophysiological basis for this improvement is not clear. Visual gain can be manipulated by increasing or decreasing the spatial amplitude of an error signal. Here, we combined a unilateral visually guided grip force task with functional MRI to understand how changes in the gain of visual feedback alter brain activity in the chronic phase after stroke. Analyses focused on brain activation when force was produced by the most impaired hand of the stroke group as compared to the non-dominant hand o

Altered whole-brain gray matter volume in form-deprivation myopia rats based on voxel-based morphometry: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is one of the major public health problems worldwide. However, the exact pathogenesis of myopia remains unclear. This study proposes using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to investigate potential morphological alterations in gray matter volume (GMV) in form-deprivation myopia (FDM) rats. METHODS: A total of 14 rats with FDM (FDM group) and 15 normal controls (NC group) underwent high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Original T2 brain images were analyzed using VBM method to identify group differences in GMV. Following MRI examination, all rats were perfused with f

Adaptive changes in early and late blind: a fMRI study of Braille reading.

Braille reading depends on remarkable adaptations that connect the somatosensory system to language. We hypothesized that the pattern of cortical activations in blind individuals reading Braille would reflect these adaptations. Activations in visual (occipital-temporal), frontal-language, and somatosensory cortex in blind individuals reading Braille were examined for evidence of differences relative to previously reported studies of sighted subjects reading print or receiving tactile stimulation. Nine congenitally blind and seven late-onset blind subjects were studied with fMRI as they covertl

Survival of retinal ganglion cells after damage to the occipital lobe in humans is activity dependent.

Damage to the optic radiations or primary visual cortex leads to blindness in all or part of the contralesional visual field. Such damage disconnects the retina from its downstream targets and, over time, leads to trans-synaptic retrograde degeneration of retinal ganglion cells. To date, visual ability is the only predictor of retinal ganglion cell degeneration that has been investigated after geniculostriate damage. Given prior findings that some patients have preserved visual cortex activity for stimuli presented in their blind field, we tested whether that activity explains variability in r

Baicalin reactivates ocular dominance plasticity to restore vision from amblyopia in adult mice.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by reduced visual acuity due to abnormal visual experience during critical periods. In adulthood, the diminished plasticity of the primary visual cortex (V1) presents a major barrier to effective treatment. Here, we investigate whether baicalin, a flavonoid derived from Scutellaria baicalensis, can restore ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) and promote functional recovery in a mouse model of adult amblyopia. Using intrinsic signal optical imaging and electrophysiological recording, we demonstrate that 10 mg/kg baicalin treatment reactivat

Mesoscale cortical mechanisms of perceptual conflict resolution in binocular rivalry.

How does the human brain resolve conflicts in sensory input to generate conscious perception? Using high-resolution 7 T functional MRI, we addressed this question by investigating column- and layer-specific activity in cortical and subcortical regions in humans during binocular rivalry. The results show that eye-specific rivalry arises from interocular inhibition between adjacent ocular dominance columns in the superficial layers of the primary visual cortex, but not between ocular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus. Eye-specific feedback from the intraparietal sulcus pla
