Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty video annotation: analysis of the learning curve of three annotators to achieve procedure proficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic interventional skills acquisition generally relies on apprenticeship-based training. Limitations of this learning model include the availability of trainers and human-factor biases. Increased routine surgical and endoscopic video recording and storage promote video-based learning (VBL) methods. VBL could shorten the learning curve by increasing trainer availability and democratizing training access for procedures such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), which is carried out by a few expert operators. The aim of this work was to evaluate video annotation as a learn

Uncertainty-guided pancreatic tumor auto-segmentation with Tversky ensemble.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pancreatic gross tumor volume (GTV) delineation is challenging due to their variable morphology and uncertain ground truth. Previous deep learning-based auto-segmentation methods have struggled to handle tasks with uncertain ground truth and have not accommodated stylistic customizations. We aim to develop a human-in-the-loop pancreatic GTV segmentation tool using Tversky ensembles by leveraging uncertainty estimation techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, we utilized a total of 282 patients from the pancreas task of the Medical Segmentation Decathlon. Thirty

Unveiling the alterations of action processing and mu rhythm in Williams Syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by social difficulties, which may stem from atypical action processing. We investigated whether individuals with WS show impaired action processing as indexed by electroencephalographic (EEG) mu suppression, a biomarker of action processing. 17 individuals with WS, 17 healthy controls (HC) and 17 individuals with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) participated in the study. During EEG recording, participants performed a task requiring to predict actions under perceptual ambiguity. In a preceding learning phase, the pro

Role of artificial intelligence in screening and medical imaging of precancerous gastric diseases.

Serological screening, endoscopic imaging, morphological visual verification of precancerous gastric diseases and changes in the gastric mucosa are the main stages of early detection, accurate diagnosis and preventive treatment of gastric precancer. Laboratory - serological, endoscopic and histological diagnostics are carried out by medical laboratory technicians, endoscopists, and histologists. Human factors have a very large share of subjectivity. Endoscopists and histologists are guided by the descriptive principle when formulating imaging conclusions. Diagnostic reports from doctors often

A Novel Drug Repositioning Approach Based on Collaborative Metric Learning.

Computational drug repositioning, which is an efficient approach to find potential indications for drugs, has been used to increase the efficiency of drug development. The drug repositioning problem essentially is a top-K recommendation task that recommends most likely diseases to drugs based on drug and disease related information. Therefore, many recommendation methods can be adopted to drug repositioning. Collaborative metric learning (CML) algorithm can produce distance metrics that capture the important relationships among objects, and has been widely used in recommendation domains. By ap

Treatment of pathological gamblers: an experimental study.

The efficacy of a behavioral treatment for pathological gamblers, including cognitive interventions, problem solving and relapse prevention is examined. Three pathological gamblers meeting DSM-III-R criteria were studied in an experimental multiple baseline design. By the end of treatment the subjects ceased all gambling behaviors, increased their perception of self-control of gambling, and evaluated their problems as less severe. Therapeutic gains were maintained at 6- and 9-month follow-ups. The importance of problem solving and the modification of erroneous perceptions in treatment programs

Predicting the success of cataract surgery.

Fifty-four elderly patients with cataracts were tested with a questionnaire and a series of visual-motor learning and performance tasks immediately before, 7 weeks after, and 16 weeks after cataract surgery. The goal was to learn whether postoperative performance and questionnaire responses could be predicted from the preoperative tasks. Twenty-two elderly people without diagnosed cataracts did the same tasks at comparable intervals to establish normal performance levels and reliabilities. The amount of activity before surgery (walking, shopping, gardening, sewing, etc.) and the ability to lea

On-scene machine learning prediction model for massive transfusion in trauma and its association with in-hospital mortality.

BACKGROUND: Early triage for massive transfusion (MT) is essential in trauma care but most existing scoring systems rely on in-hospital data. To address this limitation, a machine learning model using only prehospital variables to predict MT and stratify mortality risk was developed and externally validated. METHODS: Data from the Korean Trauma Data Bank from 19 trauma centres (2017-22) was used for model development and internal validation, with 2023 data for patients from four additional centres used for external validation. Trauma cases were identified using S or T codes from the Korean Cl

The primate hippocampal formation: evidence for a time-limited role in memory storage.

Clinical and experimental studies have shown that the hippocampal formation and related structures in the medial temporal lobe are important for learning and memory. Retrograde amnesia was studied prospectively in monkeys to understand the contribution of the hippocampal formation to memory function. Monkeys learned to discriminate 100 pairs of objects beginning 16, 12, 8, 4, and 2 weeks before the hippocampal formation was removed (20 different pairs at each time period). Two weeks after surgery, memory was assessed by presenting each of the 100 object pairs again for a single-choice trial. N

Deep Learning-Based Assessment of Brain Connectivity Related to Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Daytime Sleepiness.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with altered pairwise connections between brain regions, which might explain cognitive impairment and daytime sleepiness. By adopting a deep learning method, we investigated brain connectivity related to the severity of OSA and daytime sleepiness. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional design applied a deep learning model on structural brain networks obtained from 553 subjects (age, 59.2 ± 7.4 years; men, 35.6%). The model performance was evaluated with the Pearson's correlation coefficient (R) and probability of absolute error less than s

Deep learning techniques in predicting BRAF mutation status in cutaneous melanoma from histopathologic images.

AIMS: To develop and validate a deep learning framework for discriminating BRAF mutation status in cutaneous melanoma from routine H&E whole-slide images (WSIs) as a proof-of-concept complementary approach alongside molecular testing. METHODS: We built a two-stage pipeline comprising U-Net-based tumour segmentation followed by an Inception v3 classifier. In total, 272 institutional melanoma cases with confirmed BRAF status were used for model development (training and internal validation). Generalisability was assessed in an external test set of 76 cutaneous melanoma cases from the Cancer Gen

Identification of immune correlates of protection in Shigella infection by application of machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Immunologic correlates of protection are important in vaccine development because they give insight into mechanisms of protection, assist in the identification of promising vaccine candidates, and serve as endpoints in bridging clinical vaccine studies. Our goal is the development of a methodology to identify immunologic correlates of protection using the Shigella challenge as a model. METHODS: The proposed methodology utilizes the Random Forests (RF) machine learning algorithm as well as Classification and Regression Trees (CART) to detect immune markers that predict protection,

Functional coupling between CA3 and laterobasal amygdala supports schema dependent memory formation.

The medial temporal lobe drives semantic congruence dependent memory formation. However, the exact roles of hippocampal subfields and surrounding brain regions remain unclear. Here, we used an established paradigm and high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging of the medial temporal lobe together with cytoarchitectonic probability estimates in healthy humans. Behaviorally, robust congruence effects emerged in young and older adults, indicating that schema dependent learning is unimpaired during healthy aging. Within the medial temporal lobe, semantic congruence was associated with h

Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder are Associated with Exaggerated Neural Response to Surprising Errors.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by exaggerated salience of previously innocuous cues and associated with hyperactivity of salience-related brain regions. Recently, computational models have been deployed to operationalize salience more precisely regarding surprise-driven learning, leading to findings that such learning is altered in anxiety-related disorders. In the present study, a sample of 20 combat veterans completed a probabilistic learning task during fMRI scanning. We applied a computational model to generate a trial-by-trial surprise signal (i.e., unsigned predict

Subthalamic low beta bursts differ in Parkinson's disease phenotypes.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients may be categorized into tremor-dominant (TD) and postural-instability and gait disorder (PIGD) motor phenotypes, but the dynamical aspects of subthalamic nucleus local field potentials (STN-LFP) and the neural correlates of this phenotypical classification remain unclear. METHODS: 35 STN-LFP (20 PIGD and 15 TD) were investigated through continuous wavelet transform and machine-learning-based methods. The beta oscillation - the main band associated with motor impairment in PD - dynamics was characterized through beta burst parameters across phenotyp

Predicting the onset of Alzheimer's disease using Bayes' theorem.

Bayes' theorem describes the effect of new information (e.g., a test result) on the probability of an outcome (e.g., a disease). Likelihood ratios for separate tests can be combined to assess the joint effect of their results on disease probability. This approach has been used to develop a test package for Alzheimer's disease that consists of some simple cognitive tests (Paired Associate Learning Test, Trailmaking Test, and Raven's Progressive Matrices) combined with age and family history of dementia. A total of 1,454 subjects who had been recruited into the Medical Research Council Elderly H

Open-set long-tailed recognition via orthogonal prototype learning and false rejection correction.

Learning from data with long-tailed and open-ended distributions is highly challenging. In this work, we propose OLPR, which is a new dual-stream Open-set Long-tailed recognition framework based on orthogonal Prototype learning and false Rejection correction. It consists of a Probabilistic Prediction Learning (PPL) branch and a Distance Metric Learning (DML) branch. The former is used to generate prediction probability for image classification. The latter learns orthogonal prototypes for each class by computing three distance losses, which are the orthogonal prototype loss among all the protot
