Seventy-four patients with Raynaud's phenomenon and no associated illness were followed prospectively to determine whether a secondary disease would develop, and clinical and laboratory assessments were performed at study entry to determine their association with the subsequent development of disease. A group of 35 ballet students was assessed and then retested between 2 and 4 years later to determine the persistence of eating symptoms and to identify factors which predict eating disorders. Appendectomy was performed on 40 consecutive consenting patients undergoing elective cesarean section in a clinic population. The control group consisted of all other patients undergoing elective cesarean section during the period of study. The populations were similar. Clinical infection, blood loss, gastrointestinal tract recovery rates were equal in both groups. Most leg amputations are performed for vascular disease. A mortality of 30% was associated with above-knee amputations in this study. Healing by primary intention took place in 59% of patients, 31% had delayed healing and 10% required a revision. Only 10% of above-knee amputees used a prosthesis and 48% required total bed care. A prospective study of arthritis was performed in 47 patients with Behçet's disease followed up over a 47-month period (mean 19.25 months, SD 14.09). 253 cases of late onset epilepsy were studied prospectively. 27 cases (10.7%) had space-occupying lesion, 19 cases (7.5%) had cerebrovascular disease, 13 cases (5.1%) cerebral cysticercosis and 4 cases (1.6%) had diffuse cerebral atrophy.
