Three types of gut bacteria collaborating to improve Kui Jie'an enema treat DSS-induced colitis in mice.

A rising amount of evidences show that gut microbiota is an important factor in mediating the growth of ulcerative colitis (UC), the major product of colon bacteria fermentation butyrate as mediator have effects on the mucosal immune system by expanding regulatory T cells (Treg) in the colon. Turkish galls, an insect gall parasitized on the tree branches of Quercus infectoria Oliv., exhibiting the promising prospect in treating the remedy of UC by regulating the bacteria, whereas its mechanism remains unclear. Here, this work found that three types of gut bacteria collaborating to improve DSS-

Responses of canopy duration to temperature changes in four temperate tree species: relative contributions of spring and autumn leaf phenology.

While changes in spring phenological events due to global warming have been widely documented, changes in autumn phenology, and therefore in growing season length, are less studied and poorly understood. However, it may be helpful to assess the potential lengthening of the growing season under climate warming in order to determine its further impact on forest productivity and C balance. The present study aimed to: (1) characterise the sensitivity of leaf phenological events to temperature, and (2) quantify the relative contributions of leaf unfolding and senescence to the extension of canopy d

Potential greenhouse gas mitigations from silvopasture establishment on grasslands of temperate western and southern Europe: A simulation study.

Silvopasture systems could be effective carbon sinks but their mitigation potential across geo-climatic gradients and management regimes remains understudied. To address this, we compared the simulated establishment of high-density hybrid walnut (Juglans regia x nigra) silvopasture across Europe over 30 years using DayCent with different scenarios and assumptions: regional-scale simulations with i) country-specific nitrogen (N) input rates, and ii) similar medium N input (∼100 kg N ha-1 yr-1), contrasted with iii) country-scale scenarios, co-designed with stakeholders (for the Netherlands, Swi

Silicon modifies leaf nutriome and improves growth of oak seedlings exposed to phosphorus deficiency and Phytophthora plurivora infection.

Beneficial effects of silicon (Si) on plants have primarily been studied in crop species under single stress. Moreover, nutrient acquisition-based responses to combination of biotic and abiotic stresses (a common situation in natural habitats) have rarely been reported, in particular in conjunction with soil amendments with Si. Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), one of the ecologically and economically most important tree species in Europe, is facing a severe decline due to combined stresses, but also problems in assisted regeneration in nurseries. Here, we studied the effect of Si supply on

Correlation between airborne pollen data and the risk of tick-borne encephalitis in northern Italy.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is caused by a flavivirus that infects animals including humans. In Europe, the TBE virus circulates enzootically in natural foci among ticks and rodent hosts. The abundance of ticks depends on the abundance of rodent hosts, which in turn depends on the availability of food resources, such as tree seeds. Trees can exhibit large inter-annual fluctuations in seed production (masting), which influences the abundance of rodents the following year, and the abundance of nymphal ticks two years later. Thus, the biology of this system predicts a 2-year time lag between ma

[Water use efficiency and leaf nutrient characteristics of five major tree species in broadleaved Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountains, China].

Water use efficiency (WUE) of five dominant tree species (Pinus koraiensis, Fraxinus mandshurica, Acer mono, Quercus mongolica, and Tilia amurensis) was estimated using the stable carbon isotope method in a broadleaved Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountains. Leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents were measured to analyze nutrient utilization of the dominant species. The relationship between WUE and leaf nutrient contents was systematically assessed. WUE was different due to the variations of micrometeorological factors at different locations in the canopy. The four broadl

Effects of ozone and sulfur dioxide on phyllosphere fungi from three tree species.

Short-term effects of ozone (O(3)) on phyllosphere fungi were studied by examining fungal populations from leaves of giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) Buchholz) and California black oak (Quercus kelloggii Newb.). Chronic effects of both O(3) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) were studied by isolating fungi from leaves of mature Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis L.) trees. In this chronic-exposure experiment, mature orange trees were fumigated in open-top chambers at the University of California, Riverside, for 4 years with filtered air, ambient air plus filtered air (1:1), ambient air,

On-line analysis of the (13)CO(2) labeling of leaf isoprene suggests multiple subcellular origins of isoprene precursors.

Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is the most abundant biogenic hydrocarbon released from vegetation, and there is continuing interest in understanding its biosynthesis from photosynthetic precursors in leaf chloroplasts. We used on-line proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) to observe the kinetics of (13)C-labeling of isoprene following exposure to (13)CO(2) and then the loss of (13)C after a return to normal (12)CO(2) in oak ( Quercus agrifolia Nee) and cottonwood (Populus deltoides Barr.) leaves. Assignments of labeled isoprene species were verified by gas chromatography-mass

Treatment of a textile effluent by adsorption with cork granules and titanium dioxide nanomaterial.

This study aimed to explore the efficiency of two adsorbents, cork granules with different granulometry and titanium dioxide nanomaterial, in the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), colour and toxicity from a textile effluent. The adsorption assays with cork were unsatisfactory in the removal of chemical parameters however they eliminated the acute toxicity of the raw effluent to Daphnia magna. The assay with TiO2 NM did not prove to be efficient in the removal of colour and COD even after 240 min of contact; nevertheless it also reduced the raw effluent toxicity. The best approach for co

[Hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by Mucor species in a cork worker].

Suberosis is a type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by exposure to cork proteins and molds such as Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium frequentans. We present the case of a man with suberosis caused by Mucor species, a mold that has been rarely reported to cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Furthermore, the patient had symptoms and lung function tests indicating bronchial obstruction-an atypical presentation of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. No imaging abnormalities were observed. A diagnosis was made on the basis of bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial biopsy findings. Mucor spe

Planting sentinel European trees in eastern Asia as a novel method to identify potential insect pest invaders.

Quarantine measures to prevent insect invasions tend to focus on well-known pests but a large proportion of the recent invaders were not known to cause significant damage in their native range, or were not even known to science before their introduction. A novel method is proposed to detect new potential pests of woody plants in their region of origin before they are introduced to a new continent. Since Asia is currently considered to be the main supplier of insect invaders to Europe, sentinel trees were planted in China during 2007-2011 as an early warning tool to identify the potential for a

Growth hormone enhances gastric ulcer healing in rats.

The side effects associated with commonly used hypoglycemic drugs have spurred the search for effective plant-based remedies for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. This review aims to summarize and systematize available data on the major classes of plant metabolites with antidiabetic properties, the intracellular mechanisms underlying their action, and plant species showing potential antidiabetic activity. We performed a systematic review of 260 studies identified in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Numerous classes of plant secondary meta

Impacts of an introduced forest pathogen on the risk of Lyme disease in California.

Global changes such as deforestation, climate change, and invasive species have the potential to greatly alter zoonotic disease systems through impacts on biodiversity. This study examined the impact of the invasive pathogen that causes sudden oak death (SOD) on the ecology of Lyme disease in California. The Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, is maintained in the far western United States by a suite of animal reservoirs including the dusky-footed woodrat (Neotoma fuscipes) and deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and is transmitted by the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus)

Effects of acorn production and mouse abundance on abundance and Borrelia burgdorferi infection prevalence of nymphal Ixodes scapularis ticks.

Risk of exposure to Lyme disease is a function of the local abundance of nymphal Ixodes ticks that are infected with the etiological agent, the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. We monitored abundance of white-footed mice (the principal B. burgdorferi reservoir in the eastern and central United States) and acorns (a critical food resource for mice), and Ixodes scapularis ticks, as well as ambient temperature (cumulative growing degree days) and growing season precipitation, in a forested landscape of southeastern New York State from 1994 to 2000. We found that acorn production in autumn strongl
