Innovative digital solution supporting sun protection and vitamin D synthesis by using satellite-based monitoring of solar radiation.

Public health campaigns advise minimising UV radiation (UVR) exposure to prevent skin cancer and precancer, e.g. actinic keratosis (AK). A 3-day clinical field study, in Brazil, was performed to evaluate the mobile app Sun4Health® by siHealth Ltd. The app performs real-time monitoring of both erythemal and vitamin D-effective solar radiation doses using satellite data, enabling personalised recommendations on optimal sun exposure time and sunscreen use. When coupled to a wearable device, the app also provides body-site specific recommendations ("3D" version). 59 healthy volunteers were randomi

Near-Infrared Radiation-Assisted Drug Delivery Nanoplatform to Realize Blood-Brain Barrier Crossing and Protection for Parkinsonian Therapy.

Mitochondrial dysfunction, which is directly involved in Parkinson's disease (PD), is characterized by the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and aberrant energy metabolism. Thus, regulating mitochondrial function might be an effective strategy to treat PD. However, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) presents a significant challenge for the intracerebral delivery of drugs. Here, we synthesized a zeolitic imidazolate framework 8-coated Prussian blue nanocomposite (ZIF-8@PB), which was encapsulated with quercetin (QCT), a natural antioxidant, to treat PD. ZIF-8@PB-QCT exhibited superior near

Protection Against Solar Ultraviolet Radiation in Outdoor Construction Workers: Study Protocol for a Non-randomized Controlled Intervention Study.

Introduction: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) incidence is increasing, and occupational solar exposure contributes greatly to the overall lifetime ultraviolet radiation (UVR) dose. This is reflected in an excess risk of NMSC showing up to three-fold increase in outdoor workers. Risk of NMSC can be reduced if appropriate measures to reduce UVR-exposure are taken. Regular use of sunscreens showed reduced risk of NMSC. However, sun-safety behavior in outdoor workers is poor. The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention aiming at increasing sunscreen use by co

Reflections on the impact of advances in the assessment of genetic risks of exposure to ionizing radiation on international radiation protection recommendations between the mid-1950s and the present.

Efforts at protecting people against the harmful effects of radiation had their beginnings in the early 1900s with the intent of protecting individuals in medicine and associated professions. Such efforts remain vital for all of us more than 100 years later as part of our 'learning to live with ionizing radiation.' The field of radiation protection has evolved slowly over time with advances in knowledge on hereditary (i.e., genetic) and carcinogenic effects of radiation continually improving our ability to make informed judgments about how best to balance risks against benefits of radiation ex

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric assay for the quantitation of the novel radiation protective agent and radiation mitigator JP4-039 in murine plasma.

JP4-039 radio-protects prior to, and radio-mitigates after ionizing radiation by neutralizing reactive oxygen species. We developed and validated an LC-MS/MS assay for the quantitation of JP4-039 in murine plasma. Methanol protein precipitation of 50μL plasma was followed by isocratic reverse phase chromatography for a 6min run time, and electrospray positive mode ionization mass spectrometric detection. The plasma assay was linear from 1 to 1000ng/mL with appropriate accuracy (97.1-107.6%) and precision (3.7-12.5%CV), and fulfilled FDA guidance criteria. Recovery was 77.2-136.1% with moderate

Mechanisms underlying the protective effects of San-Bai decoction against UV radiation on the skin.

BACKGROUND: San-Bai decoction (SBD), as a classic TCM formula, has been administered orally to support skin health with a long record history dating back to the Ming Dynasty in China. However, the protective efficacy of SBD through topical application on skin remains unclear. PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SBD in protecting skin against UV radiation through an integrated in silico-in vitro-in vivo framework and elucidate its underlying mechanisms using a systems biology approach. METHODS: A public database was used to construct a network diagram linking SBD's active chemi

Profiling the antibody response of humans protected by immunization with Plasmodium vivax radiation-attenuated sporozoites.

Malaria sterile immunity has been reproducibly induced by immunization with Plasmodium radiation-attenuated sporozoites (RAS). Analyses of sera from RAS-immunized individuals allowed the identification of P. falciparum antigens, such as the circumsporozoite protein (CSP), the basis for the RTS, S and R21Matrix-M vaccines. Similar advances in P. vivax (Pv) vaccination have been elusive. We previously reported 42% (5/12) of sterile protection in malaria-unexposed, Duffy-positive (Fy +) volunteers immunized with PvRAS followed by a controlled human malaria infection (CHMI). Using a custom protein

The polyphenolic compound punicalagin protects skin fibroblasts from UVA radiation oxidative damage.

Polyphenols are a class of natural compounds that act as antioxidants, neutralising harmful free radicals that would damage cells and increase the risk of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. They also reduce inflammation, which is thought to be at the root of many chronic diseases. We are investigating the photoprotective effects of punicalagin, a type of polyphenolic compound mainly found in pomegranates, against UVA-induced damage in human skin fibroblasts. Punicalagin increases cell viability and reduces the high levels of ROS generated by photooxidative stress through its

Nasal Delivery of AntagomiR-741 Protects Against the Radiation-Induced Brain Injury in Mice.

Radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) is a serious complication in patients who have received radiotherapy for head and neck tumors. Currently, there is a scarcity of information on early diagnostic and preventive methods of RBI. Accumulating evidence suggests that microRNAs are involved in the regulation of radiation injury, but the molecular biological mechanism of miRNAs in RBI is largely unknown. Therefore, in our study, microRNA sequencing was used to discover differential miRNAs in the hippocampus of RBI-modeled mice, which suggested that miR-741-3p was most significantly upregulated. To

An approach to design a wristwatch for the protection of the human skin damage induced by ultraviolet and infrared radiations.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiations (UV) absorbed by the skin can drive photochemical reactions which range from sunburn to skin cancer. The repeated exposure to Infrared radiations (IR) induces the heat into the skin, which causes dehydration and erythema as an immediate effect. This heat activates the metalloproteinase enzyme that reduces the number of procollagen and collagen fibers in the dermal skin, which results premature skin aging. This work aims to design a protective measure in order to avoid these damages. METHOD: The proposed protective measure is a wristwatch with an alert alarm

[UV radiation in Germany: influences of ozone depletion and climate change and measures to protect the population].

Ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation) can lead to numerous skin and eye diseases, both immediately and later in life. The most serious consequence is skin cancer. The risk of skin cancer increases, among other things, with increasing UV irradiance and/or with increasing outdoor exposure times. Due to the fact that UV radiation is carcinogenic, protection of the population against harmful UV exposure is an important radiation protection and health objective. In Germany, ozone depletion and climate change can also influence the UV irradiance and outdoor exposure times to such an extent that the UV
