A new insight on the risky behavior of motorists at railway level crossings: An observational field study.

Accidents at railway level crossings (LXs) give rise to serious material and human damage. Particularly, collisions between trains and motorized vehicles are the most critical accidents occurring at LXs. It is worth noticing that violations committed by vehicle drivers are the primary cause of such accidents. The present study is a tentative to acquire a better understanding of risky behavior of vehicle drivers while crossing LXs during the closure cycle. Namely, risk analysis based on field measurement conducted at four automated LXs with two half barriers is performed. We focus on vehicle dr

Cannon Street rail disaster--lessons to be learned.

We studied the types and mechanisms of injury suffered by passengers involved in the Cannon Street rail crash, by a telephone and postal survey of all passengers attending St Bartholomew's Hospital for treatment of their injuries, and retrospective examination of their hospital records. There were 104 patients of whom 91 had complete data sets. Of the 91 patients included in the study, 63 (69 per cent) had suffered craniofacial trauma. Of the 63 patients with this type of injury, 50 had been standing at the time of impact and 48 of these were able to say exactly how they had sustained their in

Concentration of injury and fatality harm at repeat-active highway-rail grade crossings: A multi-state permutation and machine learning analysis.

Highway-rail grade crossing incidents remain a transportation safety concern, yet prior studies have focused mainly on crash occurrence, severity, and hotspot detection, leaving limited evidence on how injury-or-fatality harm concentrates at crossings with repeated incidents. Using Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Form 57 records from six U.S. states during 2013-2025, this study quantified repeat-site harm concentration and evaluated leakage-controlled surveillance ranking. The final cohort comprised 8,286 incidents, of which 3,250 involved at least one injury or fatality. Repeat-active c

Mediation Analysis to Investigate Differences in Prostate Cancer Diagnosis Stage Through Environmental Risk Factors in Louisiana.

Prostate Cancer (PCa) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men. In Louisiana (LA), Black men are disproportionately diagnosed at later stages compared to White men. This study explores environmental risk factors as potential intermediate variables linking race to cancer diagnosis stage. The Louisiana Tumor Registry data included 24,647 male patients diagnosed with PCa in LA between 2010 and 2018. Among them, 15,875 (64.40%) were Caucasian American (CA) and 8772 (35.59%) African American (AA). Mediation analysis using multiple additive regress

A novel approach to airway management in Pierre Robin syndrome-a case report.

Pierre Robin syndrome (PRS) neonates are one of the most difficult cases to intubate even for an experienced paediatric anaesthesiologist. We describe a case of a PRS-related anatomical anomaly that hindered attempts to manage the airway and the final approach that made it possible to insert an endotracheal tube (ETT). We describe the novel use of a video ureteroscope (Olympus URF-V2) as an airway endoscope. A 7-day-old, 2-kg boy was referred to our tertiary care hospital with diagnosed PRS. He was planned for correction of the mandible with mandibular distraction osteogenesis under general an

COVID-19 incidence in a cohort of public transport workers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown an excess risk of COVID-19 among several occupations, but data on public transport workers are scarce. To investigate the occupational risk posed by contact with the public, we followed up the incidence of COVID-19 in a cohort of public transport workers. METHODS: We identified the incident cases of COVID-19 between 1 September 2020 - 6 May 2021 in a cohort of 2,052 employees of a public transport agency in Sardinia, Italy. The diagnosis of COVID-19 was based on a positive molecular test. To calculate the expected events, we applied the age- and gender-

Night today, day tomorrow: how irregular work shifts interfere with our psychological health.

The 24/7 economic activity has led to a growing demand for shift workers who now make up about 21% of the working population in Europe. Shift work causes desynchronization of biological and social rhythms and therefore increases the risk for physiological and psychological health issues. Night shifts, but in particular irregular shifts are considered to have numerous harmful effects on health and well-being. In this investigation, 185 shift workers employed at an Austrian railway company, filled in online questionnaires, which included the PSQI, the ESS, and items assessing sleep issues, their

Using fixed-parameter and random-parameter ordered regression models to identify significant factors that affect the severity of drivers' injuries in vehicle-train collisions.

This study attempts to identify significant factors that affect the severity of drivers' injuries when colliding with trains at railroad-grade crossings by analyzing the individual-specific heterogeneity related to those factors over a period of 15 years. Both fixed-parameter and random-parameter ordered regression models were used to analyze records of all vehicle-train collisions that occurred in the United States from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2015. For fixed-parameter ordered models, both probit and negative log-log link functions were used. The latter function accounts for the fact

Total Mercury and Methylmercury Response in Water, Sediment, and Biota to Destratification of the Great Salt Lake, Utah, United States.

Measurements of chemical and physical parameters made before and after sealing of culverts in the railroad causeway spanning the Great Salt Lake in late 2013 documented dramatic alterations in the system in response to the elimination of flow between the Great Salt Lake's north and south arms. The flow of denser, more-saline water through the culverts from the north arm (Gunnison Bay) to the south arm (Gilbert Bay) previously drove the perennial stratification of the south arm and the existence of oxic shallow brine and anoxic deep brine layers. Closure of the causeway culverts occurred concur

A comparison of two definitions of abnormality on pulmonary outcome in epidemiologic studies.

Definition of abnormal outcome on lung function testing has not been well standardized. Observed test results have been compared with predicted values based on age, height, and sex in 2 ways: as percent of the predicted (PP) and in relation to limits established by the 95% confidence interval around the predicted (CI). The present study examines these 2 methods of comparison with respect to effect on pulmonary outcome in 377 railroad workers and 193 pipefitters exposed to asbestos. Using accepted PP and CI criteria to define abnormal test results, we classified subjects as restricted or obstru

Fatal and nonfatal accidents on the railways--a study of injuries to individuals, with particular reference to children and to nonfatal trauma.

This paper reports a five-year total population study of fatal railroad accidents involving individuals (that is, not including train crashes or derailments); and a consecutive unselected series of nonfatal isolated injuries in Queensland, Australia. There were 84 fatalities and 211 cases of significant nonfatal traumata. Fatal railway accidents involving children under 15 years of age are now more common in Australia than childhood poisonings and electrocutions. Two syndromes occur--(a) toddlers living near the tracks who simply wander onto the line; and (b) young teenage boys who are run dow

Mobile air monitoring to identify volatile organic compound distributions and potential hazard during the remediation of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment.

On February 3, 2023, a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. Initial mobile air monitoring in mid-February 2023 revealed unique spatiotemporal patterns for a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To determine long-term impacts on air quality, two follow up mobile air monitoring campaigns were carried out in March and April 2023 on public roadways using a proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This study aimed to characterize VOC distributions, identify hotspots, and characterize potential hazards. Concentrations of targeted VOCs benzene,

Environmental and Health Effects of Ventilation in Subway Stations: A Literature Review.

Environmental health in subway stations, a typical type of urban underground space, is becoming increasingly important. Ventilation is the principal measure for optimizing the complex physical environment in a subway station. This paper narratively reviews the environmental and health effects of subway ventilation and discusses the relevant engineering, environmental, and medical aspects in combination. Ventilation exerts a notable dual effect on environmental health in a subway station. On the one hand, ventilation controls temperature, humidity, and indoor air quality to ensure human comfort

Traverses, delays and fatalities at railway level crossings in Great Britain.

This paper investigates relationships between traverses, delays and fatalities to road users at railway level crossings in Great Britain. A 'traverse' means a passage across a level crossing by a road user, who may be a pedestrian, cyclist, or occupant of a road vehicle. The paper finds that the road users with the highest fatality rate per traverse are pedestrians at passive crossings. Their rate is about three orders of magnitude higher than that of users with the lowest risk, who are road vehicle occupants at railway-controlled crossings. The paper considers the choice between automatic and

Fixating on the size-speed illusion of approaching railway trains: What we can learn from our eye movements.

Railway level crossing collisions have recently been linked to a size-speed illusion where larger objects such as trains appear to move slower than smaller objects such as cars. An explanation for this illusion has centred on observer eye movements - particularly in relation to the larger, longer train. A previous study (Clark et al., 2016) found participants tend to make initial fixations to locations around the visual centroid of a moving vehicle; however individual eye movement patterns tended to be either fixation-saccade-fixation type, or smooth pursuit. It is therefore unknown as to whic

Chosen postures during specific sitting activities.

This research study analysed the interaction between people's postures and activities while in semi-public/leisure situations and during transportation (journey by train). In addition, the use of small electronic devices received particular emphasis. Video recordings in German trains and photographs in Dutch semi-public spaces were analysed using a variation of Branton and Grayson's (An evaluation of train seats by observation of sitting behaviour. Ergonomics, 10 (1), (1967), 35-51) postural targeting forms and photos. The analysis suggests a significant relationship between most activities an
