How long do the advantages of learning to read a transparent orthography last? An investigation of the reading skills and reading impairment of Welsh children at 10 years of age.

Spencer and Hanley (2003) showed that Welsh-speaking children aged between 5 and 7 years who were learning to read Welsh (a transparent orthography) performed significantly better at reading both real words and nonwords than did English-speaking children living in Wales who were learning to read English (a deep orthography). In this study, the reading skills of these children were reexamined three years later, during their sixth year of formal reading instruction. The children learning to read English continued to perform poorly at reading low- and medium-frequency irregular words but no diffe

Accommodation or Adaptation? How L2 Reading Proficiency Affects Reading Strategies in EFL Learners with and without Dyslexia.

This study investigates how reading proficiency in an orthographically opaque foreign language (L2 English) modulates word recognition and decoding strategies of Italian adolescents with and without developmental dyslexia (DD), whose native language orthography is highly transparent. The size of the visual and phonological units that are processed while reading is modulated by the orthographic depth of the language being read. In the case of early biliterate readers, reading strategies are characterized by cross-linguistic transfer. It is an open question whether this is also the case for late

Personalization and the Homogenization Debate in AI-Adaptive EFL Reading: Cognitive Load, Learner Agency, and Reading Development.

This exploratory cluster-randomized mixed-methods study examined reading development and learner experience across AI-adaptive, teacher-differentiated, and non-differentiated EFL reading instruction. Eighty-seven university-level EFL learners, classified by CEFR proficiency, completed a 12-week intervention across four intact classrooms: two AI-adaptive, one teacher-differentiated, and one non-differentiated. Reading development was assessed using equated parallel-form IELTS-format tests calibrated through Rasch modeling and CEFR cut-score mapping. Learner experience was assessed using multi-i

Unstable foveation's impact on reading, object tracking, and its implications for diagnosing and intervening in reading difficulties.

Foveation, the ability to focus on a point for clear vision, is crucial for reading smoothly and tracking moving objects. Research shows that unstable foveation disrupts reading by causing more frequent eye movements. However, it's unclear if this also affects smooth tracking of moving targets in slow readers. This study therefore investigates the link between foveation during reading and the tracking of moving targets, in a large group of participants displaying variable reading speeds in a virtual reality environment. Our analysis shows that slower readers have more intrusive fixational eye

Empowering Schools to Implement Effective Research-Based Reading Remediation Delivers Long-Lasting Improvements to Children's Reading Trajectories.

There is a wide gap between what research evidence identifies as effective reading intervention and what is currently offered in schools. This effectiveness study reports the results of a long-term research/school system partnership that is implementing reading intervention for children with reading difficulties in Canadian community schools. In Study 1, growth-curve analyses revealed significant long-term shifts in the reading trajectories of children (n = 731) from Kindergarten to Grade 5 as a function of receiving the Empower™ Reading: Decoding and Spelling intervention. Long-term outcomes

Effect of computer-based multisensory program on English reading skills of students with Dyslexia and reading difficulties.

The study evaluated the effectiveness of a computer-based Multi-Sensory Program (MSP) on English reading skills as a second language of fourth-grade students with reading difficulties and Dyslexia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Pretest-Posttest experimental design was used in this study. The analysis showed that average pretest score in both the experimental and control groups was almost the same and the average post-test score was much higher in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Moreover, results also reveal statistically significant difference in the students' mean

Reading intervention and neuroplasticity: A systematic review and meta-analysis of brain changes associated with reading intervention.

Behavioral research supports the efficacy of intervention for reading disability, but the brain mechanisms underlying improvement in reading are not well understood. Here, we review 39 neuroimaging studies of reading intervention to characterize links between reading improvement and changes in the brain. We report evidence of changes in activation, connectivity, and structure within the reading network, and right hemisphere, frontal and sub-cortical regions. Our meta-analysis of changes in brain activation from pre- to post- reading intervention in eight studies did not yield any significant e

Difficulties of Drivers With Dyslexia When Reading Traffic Signs: Analysis of Reading, Eye Gazes, and Driving Performance.

A group of adult individuals with dyslexia and a matched group of normally reading individuals participated in a driving simulation experiment. Participants were asked to read the word presented on every direction traffic sign encountered along a route, as far as possible from the sign, maintaining driving performance. Word frequency and word length were manipulated as within-subject factors. We analyzed (a) reading accuracy, (b) how far the sign was when the participant started to give the response, (c) where the participant looked during the time leading up to the response, and (d) the varia

Neurobiological Bases of Reading Disorder Part II: The Importance of Developmental Considerations in Typical and Atypical Reading.

Decoding-based reading disorder (RD; aka developmental dyslexia) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting approximately 5-10% of school-aged children across languages. Even though neuroimaging studies suggest an impairment of the left reading network in RD, the onset of this deficit and its developmental course, which may include constancy and change, is largely unknown. There is now growing evidence that the recruitment of brain networks underlying perceptual, cognitive and linguistic processes relevant to reading acquisition varies with age. These age-dependent chang

Associations between reading achievement and independent reading in early elementary school: a genetically informative cross-lagged study.

This study used a cross-lagged twin design to examine reading achievement and independent reading from 10 to 11 years (n = 436 twin pairs). Reading achievement at age 10 significantly predicted independent reading at age 11. The alternative path, from independent reading at age 10 to reading achievement at age 11, was not significant. Individual differences in reading achievement and independent reading at both ages were primarily due to genetic influences. Furthermore, individual differences in independent reading at age 11 partly reflected genetic influences on reading achievement at age 10.

Allergy patch test reading from photographic images: disagreement on ICDRG grading but agreement on simplified tripartite reading.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) system for clinical scoring of allergic patch test reactions is well established in clinical dermatology for detailed scoring of allergic reactions. The degree of redness and the presence of swelling, papules, vesicles and bullae are assessed based on visual examination and palpation of reactions. In photographic assessment used in research and tele-dermatology, the scoring is solely based on visual examination of photos. The aim of the study was to evaluate inter-expert variation in patch test reading using photograp

Intensive instruction affects brain magnetic activity associated with oral word reading in children with persistent reading disabilities.

Fifteen children ages 7 to 9 years who had persistent reading difficulties despite adequate instruction were provided with intensive tutorial interventions. The interventions targeted deficient phonological processing and decoding skills for 8 weeks (2 hours per day) followed by an 8-week, 1-hour-per-day intervention that focused on the development of reading fluency skills. Spatiotemporal brain activation profiles were obtained at baseline and after each 8-week intervention program using magnetoencephalography during the performance of an oral sight-word reading task. Changes in brain activit

Early development of neurophysiological processes involved in normal reading and reading disability: a magnetic source imaging study.

This longitudinal study examined the development of the brain mechanism involved in phonological decoding in beginning readers using magnetic source imaging. Kindergarten students were assigned to 2 groups: those who showed mastery of skills that are important predictors of proficient reading (low-risk group) and those who initially did not show mastery but later benefited from systematic reading instruction and developed average-range reading skills at the end of Grade 1 (high-risk responders). Spatiotemporal profiles of brain activity were obtained during performance of letter-sound and pseu

Beginning reading intervention as inoculation or insulin: first-grade reading performance of strong responders to kindergarten intervention.

This study examined the first-grade reading progress of children who participated in an intensive beginning reading intervention in kindergarten. Specifically, the study investigated whether kindergarten intervention could prevent first-grade reading difficulties, or produce an "inoculation" effect, for some children under certain instructional conditions. Participants included children at risk for developing reading difficulties who received a 7-month beginning reading intervention in kindergarten. In October of first grade, 59 children who had achieved criterion levels on measures of phonolo

Learning to read and interpret tattoos.

Tattooing has been a facet of many civilizations and cultures for millennia with a recent resurgence in popularity in many Western countries. The reasons for tattooing are diverse ranging from simple decorative designs to enforced tattooing of concentration camp inmates. In a forensic context tattoos are frequently observed and may play a role in some cases of identification, even after decomposition, incineration or dismemberment. More broadly however, tattoos can provide significant information on a decedent's name and age, country or region of origin, religion, names of family members and f

[Pitfalls in the prescription of reading glasses].

People in the second half of their lives often require reading glasses. A basic requirement for determining suitable reading glasses is measurement of the patient's accommodation, which describes the change in the eye's optical power caused by the attempt to clearly focus on an object at a certain distance. The maximum accommodation performance of a person already begins to decline from the age of 40 onwards. When it becomes increasingly difficult to adjust to the typical reading distance of 40 cm, one speaks of presbyopia: age-related farsightedness. This contribution describes two appropriat

A case for the sentence in reading comprehension.

PURPOSE: This article addresses sentence comprehension as a requirement of reading comprehension within the framework of the narrow view of reading that was advocated in the prologue to this forum. The focus is on the comprehension requirements of complex sentences, which are characteristic of school texts. METHOD: Topics included in this discussion are (a) evidence linking sentence comprehension and syntax with reading, (b) syntactic properties of sentences that make them difficult to understand, (c) clinical applications for the assessment of sentence comprehension as it relates to reading,
