Assessing the experience of dyspareunia in the endometriosis population: the Subjective Impact of Dyspareunia Inventory (SIDI).

STUDY QUESTION: Is the Subjective Impact of Dyspareunia Inventory (SIDI) a reliable tool to examine the experience of dyspareunia in the context of endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER: In this study, the SIDI showed good structural and psychometric properties, and thus can be used as a reliable questionnaire to assess the impact of endometriosis-related dyspareunia on multiple dimensions, such as sexuality and intimate relationships. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: In the endometriosis population, dyspareunia has a tremendous negative impact on psychological health, overall sexual function and couple relat

Defining and advancing education and conservative therapies of underactive bladder.

In contrast to other forms of voiding dysfunction, underactive bladder (UAB) has traditionally received little research or educational attention. This is changing as our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of detrusor dysfunction and other forms of underactive bladder improves. In addition, the impact of UAB on patient symptoms, general and health-related quality of life, and caregiver burden are becoming more recognized. However, there remains a paucity of data on the subject, and an extensive need for additional research and education on the topic. This paper explores the current stat

Sleep disturbances and post-traumatic stress disorder in women.

Sleep disturbances are found in a majority of individuals diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this literature review is to provide information about PTSD, in addition to assessing sleep quality. Current research observes that the lifetime prevalence of PTSD diagnosis in women is increasing. Although there are several studies that have been conducted to assess PTSD and sleep, there is a gap in the research that pertains to women, PTSD, and sleep quality. The current study will compile information on the subject to aid in decreasing the gender disparity in PTSD re

Gulf War Era Veterans' perspectives on research: a qualitative study.

AIMS: Many veterans of the 1990-1991 Gulf War Era (GWE) have experienced poorly understood health issues. In response to challenges recruiting this population for research, we conducted focus groups and semi-structured phone interviews with GWE veterans and subject matter experts (SMEs) to explore GWE veterans' perceptions about research. MAIN METHODS: Transcribed discussions were content-analyzed. Participants discussed research-related motivators and barriers identified among other populations, and nuances that may be specific to GWE veterans. KEY FINDINGS: Examples of motivating factors i

Equivalence of care? A scoping review of prison healthcare experiences of women and non-binary people who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: 'Equivalence of care' refers to the principle that imprisoned people should receive healthcare services that are equivalent in quality and accessibility to those available in the community, including drug related healthcare. We aimed to examine existing evidence about women and non-binary peoples' experiences of prison-based drug-related healthcare, how this relates to the equivalence of care principle, and how researchers have conceptualised this topic. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review by searching Scopus and Web of Science databases to identify qualitative research article

Compensatory latency time delays during consecutive perturbations in older adults with and without kinesiophobia.

BACKGROUND: Fear of movement has been related to lower limb activation patterns in older adults. However, insight into consecutive perturbations on stepping strategy while considering fall-related confidence is unknown. RESEARCH QUESTION: Are there latency time delays following three consecutive slip perturbations between subjects with and without kinesiophobia when considering limb dominance and fall efficacy differences? METHODS: There were 15 older adults with kinesiophobia and 15 age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched control subjects. The subjects stood on the platform during three cons

Prevalence of anxiety disorders in patients with mitral valve prolapse.

Most previous research on mitral valve prolapse investigated its prevalence in patients whose primary diagnosis was one of the anxiety disorders. This study explored the inverse, i.e., the prevalence of anxiety disorders in patients manifesting mitral valve prolapse. There were no significant differences between patients (N = 48) and control subjects (N = 49) in panic disorder, phobic disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder or in the Zung depression score. The patient group scored significantly higher than control subjects on the Zung Anxiety Scale but significantly lower than Zung's patient

Changes in nanomechanical properties of single neuroblastoma cells as a model for oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD).

Although complex, the biological processes underlying ischemic stroke are better known than those related to biomechanical alterations of single cells. Mechanisms of biomechanical changes and their relations to the molecular processes are crucial for understanding the function and dysfunction of the brain. In our study, we applied atomic force microscopy (AFM) to quantify the alterations in biomechanical properties in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) and reoxygenation (RO). Obtained results reveal several characteristics. Cell viability remained at

Tissue adhesives in otorhinolaryngology.

A widespread network of respiratory-related neurons within the brainstem controls the regular respiratory cycle, which is dependent upon unspecific and specific drives like hypoxia or hypercapnia. This respiratory network and its respiratory drives are subjects to typical changes during the transition from wakefulness to sleep and within the various sleep states, which favor a destabilization of breathing during sleep. There is also a respiratory-related innervation of the dilating and stiffening pharyngeal muscles as well as a local reflex control of the basic tone of upper airway muscles, bo

[Ethical problems of research on medical-assisted reproduction].

Research in the field of assisted reproduction technologies (ART) is today very active internationally and is aimed both at improving success chances of already consolidated techniques (in fact these chances are still considerably low), and at elaborating new methods like ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), oocyte cryoconservation, ovary tissue cultures. Some other techniques, connected to ART, are here considered, like preimplantation diagnosis, early sex determination, gene therapy in utero and cloning. All these subjects of research are here briefly mentioned in relation to the ethical

Medium-term outcomes 2 years after laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy: a retrospective cohort study in Japan.

This study was performed to investigate medium-term outcomes and reoperation rates after laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC). We examined 119 patients undergoing LSC for symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The primary outcomes were subjective failure and anatomical failure at 2 years; a score ≥ 2 on question 3 of the PFDI-20 was considered to indicate subjective failure. POP-Q stage 2 or higher in any compartment was considered to indicate anatomical failure. Secondary outcomes were reoperations for POP recurrence, mesh-related complications, and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The rates

Attentional bias in problem gambling: a systematic review.

Attentional bias has been the subject of extensive empirical investigation in connection with chemical addictions, and it has been demonstrated in users of several different substances. The findings show that substance users seem to notice and attend to substance-related stimuli more readily than non-substance-related stimuli. Less is known, however, about attentional bias in pathological gambling. This systematic review investigates the existing empirical evidence on attentional bias in problem and pathological gamblers. Eleven studies were identified and evaluated following a literature sear
