Effects of Moisture Content on the Acoustic Vibration and Modal Characteristics of Jinghu Soundboxes.

Bamboo is a renewable material widely used in traditional Chinese musical instruments, but its vibration behavior is sensitive to moisture. This study investigated how moisture content affects the vibration behavior of Jinghu bamboo soundboxes. Three Xipi and three Erhuang specimens were conditioned by soaking and drying to obtain 11 moisture states (M0-M10). Time domain responses, frequency response functions, natural frequencies, damping ratios, mode shapes, and a frequency-mass-based estimated structural stiffness index were evaluated using impact hammer testing and experimental modal analy

Interaction of Gd(III) MRI contrast agents with membranes: a review of recent EPR studies.

Rational development of new selective paramagnetic contrast agents (PCAs) requires a detailed understanding of their interactions with biological macromolecules. This report shows how some of these interactions can be studied with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) through examples of Gd3+ complexes interactions with model phospholipid membranes. It is shown that the spin label EPR method can be used to detect: (i) presence and possible location of lipophilic contrast agents in the model membranes, (ii) changes and distortions in membrane organization upon interaction with the PCAs, and (ii

Computational analysis of a flapping uvula on aerodynamics and pharyngeal wall collapsibility in sleep apnea.

Studying the airflows and the resultant aerodynamic pressure/force in the pharyngeal airway is critical for understanding the pathophysiology of snoring and sleep apnea. In this work, an experiment-driven computational study was conducted to examine the aerodynamics in human pharyngeal airway. An anatomically accurate pharynx model associated with different uvula kinematics was reconstructed from human magnetic resonance image (MRI) and high-speed photography. An immersed-boundary-method (IBM)-based direct numerical simulation (DNS) flow solver was adopted to simulate the corresponding unstead

Investigating the predictive value of different resting-state functional MRI parameters in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Previous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have facilitated our understanding of OCD pathophysiology based on its intrinsic activity. However, whether the group difference derived from univariate analysis could be useful for informing the diagnosis of individual OCD patients remains unclear. We aimed to apply multivariate pattern analysis of different rs-fMRI parameters to distinguish drug-naive patients with OCD from healthy control subjects (HCS). Fifty-four drug-naive OCD patients and 54 well-matched HCS were recruit

Resonance frequency versus fixed 0.1 Hz breathing in HRV biofeedback: a four-week randomized comparison.

Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is increasingly examined as an adjunctive method for reducing psychological symptoms. Standard protocols involve identifying each participant's resonance frequency (RF); however, it remains unclear whether this individualized calibration offers advantages over training at a fixed breathing rate of 0.1 Hz. We conducted a randomized trial with three groups (RF, 0.1 Hz, Control) to compare the effectiveness of a four-week HRVB intervention using an individually determined RF versus a fixed breathing frequency of 0.1 Hz. Participants (N = 88) completed pre

Altered regional spontaneous neuronal activity in blepharospasm: a resting state fMRI study.

The resting state amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is believed to reflect spontaneous cerebral neural activity. The pathophysiology of blepharospasm (BSP), which is characterized by motor symptoms and also sensory symptoms, remains unclear. The present study aims to localize possible cerebral functional abnormalities in BSP patients using resting state fMRI, and explore their possible associations with clinical variables. Voxel-based analysis was used to characterize the difference of ALFF between eighteen BSP patients and eighteen

Super-resolution imaging using surface plasmon resonance cavity lithography.

Surface plasmonic lithography (SPL) utilizes the lateral propagation of light on the surface of metals, which generates transverse excitation, resulting in evanescent waves that participate in imaging to break the diffraction limit. However, a challenge is the difficulty in achieving stable evanescent wave imaging. This paper proposes a surface plasmon resonance cavity lithography (SPRCL) technique, which achieves super-resolution imaging and explores the effects of various factors on this technique. The general dispersion relation for surface plasmon polaritons in a double-resonator cavity st

Centrifuge shaking table test studies on mechanically biologically treated waste.

The dynamic properties of mechanically biologically treatment (MBT) waste are vital for the seismic design of landfills. This study employs a centrifuge shaking table to experimentally investigate the behaviour of MBT waste using sinusoidal and Taft waves. The results reveal the following key findings: (1) MBT waste exhibits a certain degree of dilatancy under low confining pressure. (2) The natural frequency range of MBT waste is determined to be 1-7 Hz, with pronounced resonance effects observed at frequencies of 1.506, 2.97, 4.028 and 6.226 Hz. (3) The dynamic amplification factor decreases

Shared oscillatory mechanisms of alpha-band activity in prefrontal regions in eyes open and closed state using a portable EEG acquisition device.

Alpha oscillations are associated with various psychiatric disorders, with many studies focusing on the prefrontal cortex, where transcranial alternating current stimulation (TACS) is applied in the alpha frequency band. This approach often involves selecting individualized alpha frequencies to resonate with their endogenous alpha oscillations. While strong alpha oscillations (8-13 Hz) are typically induced when the eyes are closed, they can also occur during the resting state with eyes open. However, it remains unclear whether these alpha oscillations share a common neural generation mechanis

Differential Effects of 10 and 20 Hz Brain Stimulation in Chronic Stroke: A tACS-fMRI Study.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation technique, which could be potentially applied to enhance stroke rehabilitation. In this study, we aimed to characterize the frequency-specific effects of tACS in chronic stroke. Therefore, concurrent tACS and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were conducted in 13 chronic stroke individuals. Resting-state and task-based fMRI were collected for each subject under different frequencies (10 Hz, 20 Hz, Sham). Task-based fMRI showed that increased activation was found in the ipsilesional precen

Measurements of short distances between trityl spin labels with CW EPR, DQC and PELDOR.

Trityl based spin labels are emerging as a complement to nitroxides in nanometer distance measurements using EPR methods. The narrow spectral width of the trityl radicals prompts us to ask the question at which distance between these spin centers, the pseudo-secular part of the dipolar coupling and spin density delocalization have to be taken into account. For this, two trityl-trityl and one trityl-nitroxide model compounds were synthesized with well-defined interspin distances. Continuous wave (CW) EPR, double quantum coherence (DQC) and pulsed electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR) spec
