A monoclonal antibody (Ab8) to choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was used to locate structures showing ChAT-like immunoreactivity (ChAT-IR) in the brain of a teleost fish, the midshipman (Porichthys notatus). ChAT is the synthetic enzyme for acetylcholine found in neurons using that neurotransmitter; thus ChAT-IR may be interpreted as indicating putative cholinergic activity. Robust staining is seen in all cranial nerve motor nuclei. In addition, the brainstem of Porichthys is distinguished by two other expansive ChAT-IR zones: a sonic motor nucleus, which innervates swimbladder "drum" muscles,

Androgenic steroids have been implicated in the development of sex differences in Xenopus laevis frogs. In order to determine when neurons first acquire the ability to concentrate androgen, we prepared autoradiograms of CNS in developing frogs following injection of tritiated dihydrotestosterone (DHT). X. laevis tadpoles and juveniles from stage 60 to 2 months post-metamorphosis (PM) were injected with [3H]DHT. Brain and spinal cord autoradiograms from these animals were examined for the presence of labelled cells. The pattern of [3H]DHT labelling in stage-64 tadpoles and in PM juveniles was s

The tetradecapeptide somatostatin has been shown to have a widespread distribution in the rat brain. Except for its role in the inhibition of growth hormone secretion, the function of this molecule in the remainder of the central nervous system is unknown. To address this problem, the distribution of somatostatin-like immunoreactivity in the guinea-pig brainstem was examined systematically. Of 116 nuclei and/or areas, 34 nuclei had somatostatin neurons, 32 did not have any immunoreactivity and the remainder had immunoreactive fibers and/or terminals. Cranial nerve motor nuclei--somatic, branch

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) has been investigated in a series of sections passing through the medulla oblongata and pons of the squirrel brain. A comparison of the two enzymes has given an interesting picture of their selective localization in the different nuclei. Marked AChE activity has been observed in the cranial nerve nuclei. BChE activity in various nuclei of the medulla oblongata and pons is variable and occurs diffusely between the cells. Possible reasons pertaining to marked variation in AChE and BChE contents of various nuclei and

The specific white matter location of all the spinal pathways conveying penile input to the rostral medulla is not known. Our previous studies using rats demonstrated the loss of low but not high threshold penile inputs to medullary reticular formation (MRF) neurons after acute and chronic dorsal column (DC) lesions of the T8 spinal cord and loss of all penile inputs after lesioning the dorsal three-fifths of the cord. In the present study, select T8 lesions were made and terminal electrophysiological recordings were performed 45-60 days later in a limited portion of the nucleus reticularis gi

Vestibular information is essential for the control of posture, balance, and eye movements. The vestibular nerve projects to the four nuclei of the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC), as well as to several additional brainstem nuclei and the cerebellum. We have found that expression of the calcium-binding proteins calretinin (CR) and calbindin (CB), and the synthetic enzyme for nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) define subdivisions of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVe) and the nucleus prepositus (PrH), in cat, monkey, and human. We have asked if the pattern of expression of nonphosphorylated neurofil

The present study describes the location and nuclear organization of the serotonergic system in a representative of the order Crocodylia, the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). We found evidence for serotonergic neurons in three regions of the brain, including the diencephalon, rostral and caudal brainstem, as previously reported in several other species of reptile. Within the diencephalon we found neurons in the periventricular organ of the hypothalamus, but not in the infundibular recess as noted in some other reptilian species. In addition we found serotonergic neurons in the pretectal

In the few reports where electrophysiologic techniques have been used to characterise stimulus-sensitive myoclonus in the setting of a parkinsonian syndrome, the origin of the myoclonus has usually been found to be cortical. We describe a patient with parkinsonism unresponsive to levodopa who had myoclonus that was both spontaneous and induced by somatosensory stimuli. In addition, autonomic symptoms and a marked sleep disturbance were present early in his illness. Results of electrophysiologic investigations including electromyography (EMG) studies, routine electroencephalography (EEG) record

Three patients had longstanding (37 to 50 years), highly disabling narcolepsy, poorly controlled by treatment. The clinical histories were typical, consisting of sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, disturbed nocturnal sleep, and HLA-DR2 tissue typing. Polygraphic findings confirmed the diagnosis. Neurologic examination, spinal fluid, and evoked potentials were normal. On MRI scanning, all three patients showed overlapping bilateral and symmetric brainstem T2 hyperintensities circumscribed to the ventrolateral aspect of the midrostral pons. The nature of the lesio

We present a case of myotonic dystrophy accompanied by alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia. Case history, pulmonary function tests, polygraphic recording, and multiple sleep latency test, concomitant with a restrictive ventilatory abnormality, suggested a central origin of alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia in our case. The most significant neuropathological findings were in the tegmentum of the brain stem. Severe neuronal loss and gliosis were observed in the midbrain and pontine raphe, particularly in dorsal raphe nucleus and superior central nucleus. Pontine and medullary reticul

The laryngeal peripheral nervous system is presented on the basis of our results in the cat, following 10 years of investigation using mainly tracer techniques. The present paper focused on the localization of each laryngeal motoneuron, the myotopical arrangements of motoneurons innervating the pharyngeal and esophageal striated muscles within the nucleus ambiguus in the motor nerve supply, and also on the location of neurons, the distribution and density of nerve fibers, the area and laterality of the innervation, and the pathway to the larynx in the sensory and sympathetic nerve supplies. Four patients with focal brainstem ischemic strokes and various types of horizontal oculomotor disturbances have been studied clinically and radiologically. One had a six nerve palsy, one a unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, one a Fisher's one-and-a-half syndrome, and one a paramedian pontine reticular formation syndrome with a sixth nerve palsy. In all patients a C.T. Scan and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were obtained. The MRI study was performed on a CGR Magniscan 5000 with a superconducting magnet of 0.5 Tesla. In all patients a hypersignal in T2 weighted images was shown and c

The purpose of the present study is to clarify the effects of destruction and stimulation of the brain-stem on intracranial pressure (ICP) in experimentally induced subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Using 23 cats, blood pressure (BP), ICP and local cerebral blood volume (CBV) were continuously measured. Acute SAH was produced by injection of autogenous blood (3 to 7 ml) into the cisterna magna. The animals were divided into two groups. Group A: those in which hypothalamic dorsomedial nucleus (DM) and reticular formation of the midbrain (MBRF) were coagulated bilaterally one hour after SAH and Gro

Three of six siblings presented with sleep apnea between 18 and 26 months of age. Twin females and a male had normal growth and development without antecedent neurologic or apparent metabolic disorder. The females presented at 25 and 27 months respectively with irregular respiration and episodes of apnea. Twin A succumbed to an apneic episode while sleeping. Central sleep apnea was diagnosed in twin B at the Stanford Sleep Clinic. She died following an apneic episode three months after evaluation. The male presented at 18 months with fatal sleep apnea. A fourth child was evaluated for sleep ap

Recordings were made from 132 raphe- and reticulospinal tract neurons in the medial part of the lower brain stem in 32 anesthetized monkeys. Recording sites were in the nucleus raphe magnus, the rostral nucleus raphe obscurus, and the reticular formation adjacent to the raphe. The neurons were identified by antidromic activation from the upper lumbar spinal cord. Of the population sampled, 83 cells were activated antidromically from the left dorsal lateral funiculus (DLF), 32 from the right DLF, and 17 from both sides. The mean latency for antidromic activation was 8.2 +/- 7.1 ms, correspondin

Spinal neurons antidromically activated from either the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) or immediately adjacent areas were identified in the rat lumbar spinal cord. In agreement with previous anatomical work (60), these neurons were widely distributed in both the dorsal and ventral horns of the spinal cord and could be subdivided into three main groups according to their location: a) deep ventromedial (DVM) cells, which project more substantially to the LRN than to other supraspinal targets; b) cells of the median portion of the neck of the dorsal horn (mNDH), which project exclusively to the

Quantitative electro-oculographic recording techniques were used to analyze four characteristic eye movement abnormalities in 21 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). The frequency of each of the abnormalities was determined to suggest a pattern that is the most sensitive in detecting the syndrome of INO. Slowing of the adducting saccade was the most frequently found abnormality, being present in all patients. The other characteristic eye movement disorders were found less frequently: dissociated nystagmus at 30 degrees of eccentric gaze, dysmetria of the abducting eye, and limitat

Responses of accessory motoneurons to electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral nucleus gigantocellularis of medullary reticular formation were recorded intracellularly in cats under chloraloze-nembutal anesthesia. The stimulation evoked in the accessory motoneurons monosynaptic EPSPs with latency from 0.6 to 1.0 ms, maximal amplitude 4.0 mV and duration 10 ms. Weak facilitation of EPSPs and absence of action potentials were demonstrated using paired shocks and rhythmic stimulation of the nucleus.

The course of somatic afferents to caudate nucleus (CN) was investigated. In curaized cats discrete lesions in intralaminar nuclei, n. centralis medialis (NCM) affect evoked response (ER) in CN to radial nerve stimulation. NCM lesions totally abolish these somatic responses, while after subthalamic lesions ER appear only when a high stimulus intensity is used. Lesions in the specific relay nuclei, ventralis posterior lateralis (VPL) have no effect on somatic ER in CN. Barbiturates (10 mg/kg) abolish somatic ER in CN. Neocortical and hippocampal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity were recorded from rats during: (a) spontaneous activities, (b) paralysis produced by curare or gallamine neuromuscular blockade, and (c) urethane anesthesia. All of the patterns of EEG recorded from normal rats were obtained from paralyzed rats including: (a) atropine resistant neocortical desynchronization and fast (6--12 Hz) hippocampal rhythmical slow activity (RSA) normally associated with overt Type I or voluntary movement, (b) atropine sensitive and urethane resistant slow (4--6 Hz) RSA which can be recorded from immobil
