Changes in Major Retinal Blood Vessel Position Outside the Optic Nerve Head in Glaucomatous Eyes.

PURPOSE: Vascular changes along with loss of the neural rim at the optic nerve head (ONH) are established hallmarks of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. The current study investigates changes in the position of major retinal vessels outside the ONH in eyes with definite or suspected glaucoma and reports its clinical associations. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study was conducted on a dataset of 2390 patients with definite or suspected glaucoma and serial photographic documentation from 2015 to 2022. Images were overlaid chronologically and examined for vascular displacement (VD) outsi

Unveiling potential retinal and choroidal markers with SS-OCTA in detecting cerebral small vessel disease.

To investigate the potential retinal and choroidal markers in identifying cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) through Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (SS-OCTA). Participants were enrolled from the FRESH-CSVD study, and underwent multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and SS-OCTA. CSVD patients were identified on multimodal MRI based on STRIVE-2 criteria. SS-OCTA parameters were captured using the VG200I device. The association between SS-OCTA parameters and CSVD imaging features was analyzed based on a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-derived

Retinal Blood Vessel Tracking and Diameter Estimation via Gaussian Process With Rider Optimization Algorithm.

Retinal blood vessels structure analysis is an important step in the detection of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Accurate tracking and estimation of retinal blood vessels in terms of their diameter remains a major challenge in retinal structure analysis. In this research, we develop a rider-based Gaussian approach for accurate tracking and diameter estimation of retinal blood vessels. The diameter and curvature of the blood vessel are assumed as the Gaussian processes. The features are determined for training the Gaussian process using Radon transf

Retinal Blood Vessel Formation in the Macula Following Intravitreal Ranibizumab Injection for Aggressive Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood blindness. Recently, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs have been widely used for ROP to inhibit abnormal retinal angiogenesis. However, there is a concern that such drugs potentially also affect normal retinal vascular development. We report a case of blood vessel growth across the macula after anti-VEGF treatment for zone I aggressive ROP. A 25-week-old female infant was administered 0.2 mg of ranibizumab for bilateral aggressive ROP in both eyes at 33 weeks of postmenstrual age. Under normal development, reti

Vascular insult in neonatal retinal hemorrhage: computational analysis of a fundus-segmented blood vessel network.

Common hypotheses for the biomechanical cause underlying neonatal retinal hemorrhage include elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) inducing venous outflow obstruction and retinal deformation. A finite element computational model of the eye, optic nerve, and orbit was simulated with particular attention to the retinal vessels to analyze stress and strain on these structures during external head compression associated with normal vaginal delivery. Pressure from maternal contractions displaced the eye backward into the orbit, and the stiff optic nerve sheath provided localized resistance to this p

Comparison of Retinal Imaging Techniques in Individuals with Pulmonary Artery Hypertension Using Vessel Generation Analysis.

(1) Background: Retinal vascular imaging plays an essential role in diagnosing and managing chronic diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, sickle cell retinopathy, and systemic hypertension. Previously, we have shown that individuals with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a rare disorder, exhibit unique retinal vascular changes as seen using fluorescein angiography (FA) and that these changes correlate with PAH severity. This study aimed to determine if color fundus (CF) imaging could garner identical retinal information as previously seen using FA images in individuals with PAH. (2) Meth

Polarization properties of retinal blood vessel walls measured with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography.

A new method based on polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is introduced to determine the polarization properties of human retinal vessel walls, in vivo. Measurements were obtained near the optic nerve head of three healthy human subjects. The double pass phase retardation per unit depth (DPPR/UD), which is proportional to the birefringence, is higher in artery walls, presumably because of the presence of muscle tissue. Measurements in surrounding retinal nerve fiber layer tissue yielded lower DPPR/UD values, suggesting that the retinal vessel wall tissue near the optic

Cerebral cavernous malformation type 1 with retinal blood vessel tortuosity and KRIT1 gene mutation.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) represent a relatively rare and heterogeneous clinical entity with mutations identified in three genes. Both sporadic and familial forms have been reported. We present a young female patient with episodic paresthesia and headaches, but without acute neurological deficits. Her mother had a hemorrhaged cavernoma surgically removed 21 years ago. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple cavernous malformations in the size of a few millimeters and the ophthalmologic exam detected retinal blood vessel tortuosity in the proband. Systemic features of retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations: a monogenic small vessel disease.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations (RVCL-S) is a small vessel disease caused by C-terminal truncating TREX1 mutations. The disease is typically characterized by vascular retinopathy and focal and global brain dysfunction. Systemic manifestations have also been reported but not yet systematically investigated. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we compared the clinical characteristics of 33 TREX1 mutation carriers (MC+) from three Dutch RVCL-S families with those of 37 family members without TREX1 mutation (MC-). All participants we
