Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis following a Streptococcus pyogenes Toxic Shock Syndrome in a Previously Healthy Patient: A Case Report.

Mucormycosis is an uncommon opportunistic infection and the gastrointestinal form is the rarest. Rhizopus sp. is the most frequent pathogen and infection occurs almost exclusively in immunocompromised patients. We describe the first case of intestinal mucormycosis occurring after a Streptococcus pyogenes toxic shock syndrome in a previously healthy patient caused by Rhizopus microsporus var. azygosporus.

Angioinvasive mucormycosis and paradoxical stroke: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Rhizopus typically results in acute, aggressive and angioinvasive infection, particularly in immunosuppressed individuals. Risk factors include immunosuppression in haematologic malignancy, uncontrolled hyperglycemia, iron overload states, and older chelator agents such as deferoxamine. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a 33-year-old female with transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia who was started on intravenous deferiprone therapy and subsequently presented with a retropharyngeal abscess. Despite intravenous broad spectrum antibiotics, she continued to deteriorate and

Mucormycosis during deferoxamine therapy is a siderophore-mediated infection. In vitro and in vivo animal studies.

This study investigates the pathophysiology of mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus, which has been reported in 46 dialysis patients, while treated with deferoxamine (DFO). This drug aggravates mucormycosis, which we experimentally induced in guinea pigs and which lead to a shortened animal survival (P < or = 0.01). The drug's effect on Rhizopus is not mediated through the polymorphonuclear cells. Fe.DFO, the iron chelate of DFO, abolishes the fungistatic effect of serum on Rhizopus and increases the in vitro growth of the fungus (P < or = 0.0001). This effect is present at Fe.DFO concentrations >

Activity of posaconazole in treatment of experimental disseminated zygomycosis.

Three isolates of zygomycetes were used to produce a disseminated infection in nonimmunocompromised mice. Against all zygomycete strains, amphotericin B significantly prolonged survival. Itraconazole was inactive against Rhizopus microsporus and Rhizopus oryzae but was partially active against Absidia corymbifera. Posaconazole had no beneficial effects against R. oryzae but showed partial activity against A. corymbifera. Posaconazole had a clear dose-response effect against R. microsporus.

Occupational asthma in a coal miner.

Occupational asthma in coal miners is hardly recognised. A report is presented of a coal miner whose clinical picture suggested a respiratory allergy which occurred only in the mine where he worked. Serum specific IgE levels, skin tests, and bronchial provocation tests with different commercial extracts showed sensitisation to Rhizopus nigricans. Rhizopus spp were found inside the mine, as demonstrated by cultures on petri plates.

Development and evaluation of an immunodiffusion test for diagnosis of systemic zygomycosis (mucormycosis): preliminary report.

An antigen analysis with filtrate and homogenate precipitinogens of single isolates of the zygomycetes Absidia corymbifera, Mucor pusillus, Rhizopus arrhizus, and Rhizopus oryzae demonstrated the presence of common antigens among the three genera as well as antigens which permit their differentiation. Selected homogenate antigens were valuable in developing a diagnostic immunodiffusion (ID) test for systemic zygomycosis. When sera from 43 patients with various proven mycoses other than zygomycosis were tested against each of the antigens, none formed precipitin bands identical to those formed

Mycetohabitans rhizoxinica bacteremia in the setting of invasive fungal disease in an immunocompromised patient.

BACKGROUND: Mycetohabitans [Burkholderia] rhizoxinica is an endosymbiotic bacteria of Rhizopus microsporus that normally causes rice seedling blight. In our case report, we present one of the first known cases of concomitant bacteremia with M. rhizoxinica and invasive mold infection due to Rhizopus spp. in an immunocompromised child. CASE SUMMARY: A 3 year old male recently diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia developed febrile neutropenia. His workup was significant for invasive fungal sinusitis due to Exserohilum spp. based on histopathology and culture, a right middle lobe in

Outbreaks of zygomycosis in hospitals.

Zygomycosis refers to a group of uncommon and frequently fatal mycoses caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes, the organisms of which are usually found in decaying organic matter. Disease can be transmitted by the inhalation of spores or by direct inoculation on disrupted skin or mucosa. For rare diseases such as zygomycosis, two or more cases occurring in a short time should be investigated as a probable epidemic. Twelve hospital outbreaks and two pseudoepidemics caused by Zygomycetes have been cited in the English literature. The first epidemic was recorded in 1977 and the last in 2008. Ou

Zygomycosis in a renal allograft recipient.

Invasive fungal infections can cause considerable morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Zygomycosis is a type of invasive fungal infection with a rapid course and grave prognosis. Renal transplant recipients with concomitant diabetes mellitus are most susceptible to this infection. We report here a case of disseminated zygomycosis (Rhizopus sp.) in a renal allograft recipient with posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM). This is the first reported case of zygomycosis caused by Rhizopus species.

Anti-CotH3 antibodies protect mice from mucormycosis by prevention of invasion and augmenting opsonophagocytosis.

Mucorales are fungal pathogens that cause mucormycosis, a lethal angioinvasive disease. Previously, we demonstrated that Rhizopus, the most common cause of mucormycosis, invades endothelial cells by binding of its CotH proteins to the host receptor GRP78. Loss of CotH3 renders the fungus noninvasive and attenuates Rhizopus virulence in mice. Here, we demonstrate that polyclonal antibodies raised against peptides of CotH3 protected diabetic ketoacidotic (DKA) and neutropenic mice from mucormycosis compared to mice treated with control preimmune serum. Passive immunization with anti-CotH3 antibo

Identification of acid- and thermotolerant extracellular beta-glucosidase activities in Zygomycetes fungi.

Extracellular beta-glucosidase activity of 94 strains, representing 24 species of the genera Gilbertella, Mucor, Rhizomucor , and Rhizopus was evaluated in submerged culture and under solid state fermentation on wheat bran. Gilbertella persicaria G1 isolate showed the highest activity (70.9 U ml -1 ) followed by other Gilbertella (58.6-59.0 U ml -1 ) and Rhizomucor miehei isolates (29.2-42.0 U ml -1 ). Optimum temperature for enzyme production was 25 degrees C for Gilbertella and Mucor , and 30 degrees C for Rhizomucor and Rhizopus strains. Enzymes of R. miehei strains proved to be thermotoler

Monotherapy or combination therapy of isavuconazole and micafungin for treating murine mucormycosis.

OBJECTIVES: Previously we demonstrated the benefit of isavuconazole in treating murine mucormycosis due to Rhizopus. We wanted to determine the efficacy of isavuconazole in treating murine mucormycosis caused by Mucor, the second most common cause of the disease. Furthermore, because we previously determined that Rhizopus possesses the target enzyme for echinocandins and micafungin has activity against murine mucormycosis, we compared the activity of combination therapy (isavuconazole + micafungin) with placebo, either drug alone or standard therapy of liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB) in treati

First Molecular Identification of Three Clinical Isolates of Fungi Causing Mucormycosis in Honduras.

Mucormycoses are rare but serious opportunistic fungal infections caused by filamentous organisms of the order Mucorales. Here we report the first molecular identification of Rhizopus oryzae (heterotypic synonym Rhizopus arrhizus), R. delemar, and Apophysomyces ossiformis as the etiological agents of three cases of severe mucormycosis in Honduras. Conventional microbiological cultures were carried out, and DNA was extracted from both clinical samples and axenic cultures. The ITS ribosomal region was amplified and sequenced. Molecular tools are suitable strategies for diagnosing and identifying

Biochemical changes in micro-fungi fermented cassava flour produced from low- and medium-cyanide variety of cassava tubers.

Comparative studies were carried out on the ability of pure strain of Rhizopus oryzae and Saccharomyces cerevisae to alter the nutritional quality of cassava flour produced from low- and medium-cyanide variety of cassava tuber. Low- and medium-cyanide variety of cassava tubers were collected from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. These tubers were washed, peeled, grated and aseptically inoculated with pure strains of Rhizopus oryzae and Saccharomyce cerevisae in nutrient solution respectively, before allowing them to ferment aerobically for 3 days. Epidemiology of Mucormycosis in India.

Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive disease caused by saprophytic fungi of the order Mucorales. The exact incidence of mucormycosis in India is unknown due to the lack of population-based studies. The estimated prevalence of mucormycosis is around 70 times higher in India than that in global data. Diabetes mellitus is the most common risk factor, followed by haematological malignancy and solid-organ transplant. Patients with postpulmonary tuberculosis and chronic kidney disease are at additional risk of developing mucormycosis in this country. Trauma is a risk factor for cutaneous mucormycosis. I

Mucormycosis: A new threat to Coronavirus disease 2019 with special emphasis on India.

The main reason for the growth of mucormycosis in people with Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is mainly produced by Rhizopus spp. The infective mechanisms and issues recognized in Rhizopus spp. are the cell wall, germination proteins, and enzymes assisted to iron sequestration, CotH protein, and positive regulation of the GRP78 cell receptor. Mucormycosis is mainly caused by the Rhizopus spp. such as R. oryzae, R. microsporus, R. arrhizus, R. homothallicus, etc. that are gifted to numerous host defense mechanisms and attribute to the endothelium via specific receptors, GRP78 simplifying th

Invasive synergistic fungal infection after motor vehicle collision.

Primary invasive fungal infections occur after direct contact or direct inoculation of the skin with fungal spores. Rhizopus species and Aspergillus terreus are opportunistic fungal species that rarely cause disease in immunocompetent hosts. In susceptible patients, infection may progress rapidly. Aggressive surgical debridement and use of systemic antimycotic agents may successfully control disease and prevent systemic dissemination. We describe the case of a patient with a scalp infection, caused by Rhizopus species and A. terreus, that occurred after contact with pavement during a motor veh

[Treatment review in rhinocerebral mucormycosis].

The rhinocerebral mucormycosis is the more common form produced by Rhizopus, a genus of fungi. It's a serious infective disease with high mortality, that needs a precocious medical treatment. Amphotericin B is the choice medical treatment, but liposomal amphotericine B in recent years is a better drug, due to minor renal toxicity and greater tisular diffusion. Even can not to treat all affected areas it's necessary an extensive surgical treatment according to individual characteristics and disease evolution.
