Prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen 1 in a population of dogs tested in California.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have evaluated the breed-specific prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen (DEA) 1 in various geographic regions. However, few large-scale studies exist that describe breed prevalence of DEA 1 in the United States. KEY FINDINGS: From January 2000 to October 2020, 6469 dogs had their RBC antigen type determined and were included in the study. The overall prevalence of DEA 1 in all dogs was 61.2%. Of 50 breeds with sample sizes ≥20, 8 breeds had a high prevalence (≥90%) of DEA 1-positive blood type: Basset Hound, Bernese Mountain Dog, Brittany, Dachshund, Miniature Pin

Alternative Molecular Tools for the Fight against Infectious Diseases of Small Ruminants: Native Sicilian Sheep Breeds and Maedi-Visna Genetic Susceptibility.

Maedi-visna (MV) is a disease caused by small ruminant lentiviruses. It is included in the list of notifiable terrestrial animal diseases due to economic losses and animal welfare harm in the sheep sector. To date, control programs remain the onliest approach to avoiding infection. The allelic variant p.Glu35Lys (E35K) of the TMEM154 gene has been strongly associated with host vulnerability to MV illness. The present study aimed to investigate the association of TMEM154 E35K allele frequencies with MV susceptibility in native Sicilian sheep breeds. More than 400 animals from 14 local sheep wer

Teat morphology across five buffalo breeds: a multi-country collaborative study.

The buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is a species of worldwide importance, raised to produce milk, meat, and hides, and often used as a working animal in rural contexts with low access to hi-tech solutions. In the present study, 100 lactating buffaloes (50 primiparous and 50 pluriparous) of five popular breeds were recruited to characterize and compare teat morphology. In particular, the focus was put on the Nili Ravi, Mediterranean, Egyptian, Bulgarian Murrah, and Azeri buffaloes raised in Pakistan, Italy, Egypt, Bulgaria, and Iran, respectively. In all countries, a longitudinal cross-section ultras

Consequence of evolutionary loss of seasonal breeding by humans for prostate cancer chemoprevention.

During mammalian evolution, circulating levels of gonadotropins [i.e., luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)] acquired regulation by environmental (e.g., light, temperature, water, food, predators, etc.), and social (e.g., sound, sight, aggression, crowding, etc.) inputs that determine the level of testosterone production and secretion by the testis and systemic levels in the blood. This regulation became coordinated by interaction between the retinohypothalamic-pineal and the hypothalamic-pituitary neural axes, which resulted in androgen levels and its ligand-depende

Investigating the potential for genetic improvement of nitrogen and phosphorus efficiency in a Swiss large white pig population using chemical analysis.

Pig production contributes to environmental pollution through excretion of phosphorus and nitrogenous compounds. European pig production requires annual imports of currently 36 million tons of soya bean, because domestic plant protein sources often do not meet the required protein quality. Most of the mineral phosphate sources are also imported. It is therefore desirable to improve nutrient deposition efficiency through selective breeding, that is to realise similar growth rates and carcass compositions as currently achieved but with a lower intake of dietary crude protein or phosphate. For a

Ulcerative dermatitis in the rat.

Ulcerative dermatitis observed in several shipments of rats was found to be limited to one strain (Sprague Dawley) provided by one supplier from two specific breeding areas. The incidence of lesions was higher in males than in females. Rats receiving an agar base diet also appeared to have a higher incidence of the lesions. The lesion consisted of a moist ulcer usually involving the lateral aspect of the shoulder and often the sides of the neck. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from lesions of affected rats and from the skin of unaffected rats. Inoculation of S aureus into susceptible animal

Gene action, combining ability, heterotic grouping and hybrid performance of tropical maize inbred lines from a public breeding program in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Single-cross hybrids are the predominant type of cultivar planted by maize growers worldwide. The clear understanding of both the inheritance of target traits and the heterotic patterns of breeding germplasm is essential for the development of heterotic and high-yielding single-cross hybrids in maize breeding programs. Therefore, our objectives were to determine the inheritance of agronomic traits in improved tropical maize germplasm; estimate the general and specific combine abilities (GCA and SCA) effects for these traits among 15 selected inbred lines; group these lines into h

Impact of breed and sex on porcine endocrine transcriptome: a bayesian biometrical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transcriptome variability is due to genetic and environmental causes, much like any other complex phenotype. Ascertaining the transcriptome differences between individuals is an important step to understand how selection and genetic drift may affect gene expression. To that end, extant divergent livestock breeds offer an ideal genetic material. RESULTS: We have analyzed with microarrays five tissues from the endocrine axis (hypothalamus, adenohypophysis, thyroid gland, gonads and fat tissue) of 16 pigs from both sexes pertaining to four extreme breeds (Duroc, Large White, Iberian

Genomic selection in United States dairy cattle.

The genomic selection program for dairy cattle in the United States has doubled the rate of genetic gain. Since 2010, the average annual increase in net merit has been $85 compared to $40 during the previous 5 years. The number of genotypes has been rapidly increasing both domestically and internationally and reached over 6.5 million in 2022 with 1,134,593 submitted in 2021. Evaluations are calculated for over 50 traits. Feed efficiency (residual feed intake), heifer and cow livability, age at first calving, six health traits, and gestation length have been added in recent years to represent t

Policies to promote breeding for lice-resistant salmon: Incentives designed for resilient and sustainable growth in aquaculture.

Sea lice represent a persistent and growing problem, challenging the resilience and growth of the salmon aquaculture industry. In this Norwegian case study, we studied and discuss how the absence of policy instruments directed at stimulating breeding for lice resistance (LR) might be explained. We found well-documented opportunities for selection progress for LR. Hence, breeding on LR appears with an untapped potential. We discuss how market-based, legal, institutional and interest-based factors can explain the absence of policy instruments stimulating LR breeding. Methodologically, we obtaine

Genomic Prediction of Resistance to Pasteurellosis in Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) Using 2b-RAD Sequencing.

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is a species of paramount importance to the Mediterranean aquaculture industry, with an annual production exceeding 140,000 metric tons. Pasteurellosis due to the Gram-negative bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (Phdp) causes significant mortality, especially during larval and juvenile stages, and poses a serious threat to bream production. Selective breeding for improved resistance to pasteurellosis is a promising avenue for disease control, and the use of genetic markers to predict breeding values can improve the accuracy of selection, and a

A note on the reproductive success of primiparous blue fox vixens in social groups.

Our aim was to compare traditional breeding system, i.e. artificial insemination with singly-housing, to alternative breeding systems in farmed blue fox (Alopex lagopus or Vulpes lagopus) vixens. At the age of 7 weeks (i.e. at weaning), 48 randomly selected female blue fox cubs were divided into four experimental groups: (1) artificially inseminated singly-housed vixens in cages (AI-SC), (2) artificially inseminated pair-housed vixens in double-cages (AI-PC), (3) naturally bred pair-housed vixens with a male in triple-cages (NB-PC), and (4) naturally bred pair-housed vixens with a male in outd

Transcriptome profiling of mantle tissue reveals candidate genes associated with growth variation in Asian hard clam (Meretrix meretrix).

Growth rate is an important economic trait in the Asian hard clam Meretrix meretrix, yet the molecular basis underlying growth variation remains poorly understood. In this study, fast- and slow-growing individuals from the same breeding cohort and cultured under identical pond conditions were selected for comparative transcriptomic analysis of mantle tissue. Differential expression and functional enrichment analyses identified genes and biological pathways potentially associated with growth variation. The identified differentially expressed genes were mainly involved in muscle development, she

Cell adhesion and immune response, two main functions altered in the transcriptome of seasonally regressed testes of two mammalian species.

In species with seasonal breeding, male specimens undergo substantial testicular regression during the nonbreeding period of the year. However, the molecular mechanisms that control this biological process are largely unknown. Here, we report a transcriptomic analysis on the Iberian mole, Talpa occidentalis, in which the desquamation of live, nonapoptotic germ cells is the major cellular event responsible for testis regression. By comparing testes at different reproductive states (active, regressing, and inactive), we demonstrate that the molecular pathways controlling the cell adhesion functi

DESIGN: a framework for generative AI-enabled crop molecular design-driven breeding.

Crop breeding is shifting from selecting naturally occurring variants to actively designing genetic features. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) provides a computational foundation for this transition; however, its application in crop systems remains limited. This review bridges this gap by systematically evaluating the translational potential of GenAI for crop molecular design breeding. We examine four major computational architectures and their applications across six key areas relevant to crop breeding: gene regulatory element design, protein engineering, small-molecule generation,

Genetic analysis of prolactin gene in Pakistani cattle.

Prolactin (PRL) is a polypeptide hormone, secreted mainly by the anterior pituitary gland. It is involved in many endocrine activities. The key functions of PRL are related to reproduction and lactation in mammals. To ascertain the presence of polymorphisms in the bovine PRL gene (bPRL), the bPRL gene was sequenced. Five mutations were identified in exonic region and eleven in associated intronic regions in 100 cattle from four Pakistani cattle breeds. Haplotype of predicted amino acid changes represent a common alteration at codon 222 from R-Arginine into K-Lysine in all four breeds. Signific

Variability of laying hen behaviour depending on the breed.

OBJECTIVE: For many generations, most species of farm animals have been subjected to intense and strictly targeted selection for improvement of their performance traits. This has led to substantial changes in animal anatomy and physiology, which resulted in considerable differences between the current animal breeds and their wild ancestors. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is breed-specific variability in behaviour as well as differences in emotional reactivity and preferences of laying hens. METHODS: The investigations involved 50 Green-legged Partridge, 50 Polbar, and 50
