The processing of verbal memories after traumatic brain injury.

Objective: Memory dysfunction is a persistent cognitive symptom following traumatic brain injury (TBI), negatively impacting capacity for independent living and productivity. Traditional scoring of neuropsychological memory tests does not allow for differentiation of specific impairments of encoding, consolidation and/or retrieval, or the potential impact of strategy deficits. Method: The current study examined performance of 142 moderate-to-severe TBI participants and 68 demographically matched healthy controls on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) using Item Specific Data Analysis

Multisession anodal transcranial direct current stimulation induces motor cortex plasticity enhancement and motor learning generalization in an aging population.

OBJECTIVES: The present aging study investigated the impact of a multisession anodal-tDCS protocol applied over the primary motor cortex (M1) during motor sequence learning on generalization of motor learning and plasticity-dependent measures of cortical excitability. METHODS: A total of 32 cognitively-intact aging participants performed five consecutive daily 20-min sessions of the serial-reaction time task (SRTT) concomitant with either anodal (n = 16) or sham (n = 16) tDCS over M1. Before and after the intervention, all participants performed the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT) and Transcranial

Chronic administration of isocarbophos induces vascular cognitive impairment in rats.

Vascular dementia, being the most severe form of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), is caused by cerebrovascular disease. Whether organophosphorus causes VCI remains unknown. Isocarbophos (0.5 mg/kg per 2 days) was intragastrically administrated to rats for 16 weeks. The structure and function of cerebral arteries were assayed. The learning and memory were evaluated by serial tests of step-down, step-through and morris water maze. Long-term administration of isocarbophos reduced the hippocampal acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and acetylcholine (ACh) content but did not alter the plasma

Effect of Associative Learning on Memory Spine Formation in Mouse Barrel Cortex.

Associative fear learning, in which stimulation of whiskers is paired with mild electric shock to the tail, modifies the barrel cortex, the functional representation of sensory receptors involved in the conditioning, by inducing formation of new inhibitory synapses on single-synapse spines of the cognate barrel hollows and thus producing double-synapse spines. In the barrel cortex of conditioned, pseudoconditioned, and untreated mice, we analyzed the number and morphological features of dendritic spines at various maturation and stability levels: sER-free spines, spines containing smooth endop

Verbal encoding deficits in a patient with a left retrosplenial lesion.

Over the past decade, memory impairments associated with retrosplenial damage have received increased attention among neuroscientists, although the exact role of the retrosplenial region in memory has not been clearly defined. Evidence from lesion studies and functional neuroimaging has implicated the retrosplenial region in verbal episodic memory, temporal ordering of information, and topographical memory. In addition, recent positron emission tomography studies have shown increased activation of the retrosplenial cortex during tasks involving both the encoding and retrieval of episodic infor

A machine learning framework for multimodal temporal prediction of neurological outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Neurological prognostication after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains challenging. Existing clinical scores rely on static, single-timepoint assessments and fail to capture the dynamic interplay among coagulation derangement, systemic inflammation, brain injury, and evolving neurological status. Whether integrating serial multimodal data through machine learning can meaningfully improve prediction over established approaches has not been systematically evaluated. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 414 consecutive OHCA patients treated with targeted temperature management (

Atypical connectivity in the cortico-striatal network in NF1 children and its relationship with procedural perceptual-motor learning and motor skills.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is considered a model of neurodevelopmental disorder because of the high frequency of learning deficits, especially developmental coordination disorder. In neurodevelopmental disorder, Nicolson and Fawcett formulated the hypothesis of an impaired procedural learning system that has its origins in cortico-subcortical circuits. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between cortico-striatal connectivity and procedural perceptual-motor learning performance and motor skills in NF1 children. METHODS: Seventeen NF1 and 18 typically developing childr

Impaired sequence learning in dystonia mutation carriers: a genotypic effect.

Abnormalities in motor sequence learning have been observed in non-manifesting carriers of the DYT1 dystonia mutation. Indeed, motor sequence learning deficits in these subjects have been associated with increased cerebellar activation during task performance. In the current study, we determined whether similar changes are also present in clinically manifesting DYT1 carriers as well as in carriers of other primary dystonia mutations such as DYT6. Additionally, we determined whether sequence learning performance and associated brain activation in these subjects correlate with previously describ

Reduced Learning of Sound Categories in Dyslexia Is Associated with Reduced Regularity-Induced Auditory Cortex Adaptation.

A main characteristic of dyslexia is poor use of sound categories. We now studied within-session learning of new sound categories in dyslexia, behaviorally and neurally, using fMRI. Human participants (males and females) with and without dyslexia were asked to discriminate which of two serially-presented tones had a higher pitch. The task was administered in two protocols, with and without a repeated reference frequency. The reference condition introduces regularity, and enhances frequency sensitivity in typically developing (TD) individuals. Enhanced sensitivity facilitates the formation of "

Subtype-specific enhancement of implicit statistical learning in migraine: insights from BOLD signal variability.

OBJECTIVES: Migraine is associated with distinct cognitive alterations even during the interictal phase, yet the underlying mechanisms of implicit learning processes remain unexplored. Previous research has shown that the temporal variability of the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal reliably predicts clinical symptoms in migraine. Building on these findings, the present study aims to investigate how implicit statistical learning processes relate to this resting-state functional imaging marker in episodic migraine. We hypothesized that implicit statistical learning would differ between

Evaluation of GPT-4 concordance with north American spine society guidelines for lumbar fusion surgery.

BackgroundConcordance with evidence-based medicine (EBM) guidelines is associated with improved clinical outcomes in spine surgery. The North American Spine Society (NASS) has published coverage guidelines on indications for lumbar fusion surgery, with a recent survey demonstrating a 60% concordance rate across its members. GPT-4 is a popular deep learning model that receives knowledge training across public databases including those containing EBM guidelines. There is prior research exploring the potential utility of artificial intelligence (AI) software in adherence with spine surgery practi

Exploratory evaluation of baseline cognition as a predictor of perceived benefit in a study of behavioral therapy for urinary incontinence in Parkinson disease.

AIMS: While behavior-based pelvic floor muscle exercise therapy is an effective treatment for overactive bladder in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, cognitive function may be a predictor of rehabilitation outcomes. METHODS: In a planned exploratory analysis, participants who had a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with a score ≥18 who were randomized in a clinical trial to behavioral treatment were classified by perceived improvement (Benefit vs. No Benefit) as reported on a validated Satisfaction and Benefit Questionnaire. General cognition (MoCA), motor procedural learning (Serial reac

Recurrent Takotsubo syndrome in a boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A case report.

Takotsubo syndrome is a rare cause of reversible ventricular dysfunction that imitate an acute coronary syndrome. The entity is unusual among pediatric populations and a recurrent episode is extremely rare. We report a case of recurrent takotsubo syndrome in an eight-year-old boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). His chest pain episodes were aggravated by a strong emotional stimuli. During episodes of chest pain, electrocardiograms (ECG) showed ST elevation while echocardiograms showed left ventricle apical ballooning; however, a coronary angiography was normal. Serial ECG and echocardio

Three-dimensional analysis of junctions between efferent and epididymal ducts in the human caput epididymis.

BACKGROUND: Due to the scarcity of studies using human tissues, the limited information is currently available on the gross structure of the caput epididymis in humans, at which efferent ducts connect to the epididymal duct. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the three-dimensional structures of efferent and caput epididymal ducts in humans, with a focus on junctions between the former and the latter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined three sets of human efferent and caput epididymal ducts in specimens obtained from prostatic carcinoma patients. They were reconstructed from serial par

Personalized statistical learning algorithms to improve the early detection of cancer using longitudinal biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing screening for early detection of cancer have serial biomarker measurements that are not traditionally being incorporated into decision making when evaluating biomarkers. OBJECTIVE: We discuss statistical learning algorithms that have the ability to learn from patient history to make personalized decision rules to improve the early detection of cancer. These artificial intelligence algorithms are able to learn in real time from data collected on the patient to identify changes in the patient that could signal asymptomatic cancer. METHODS: We discuss the paramet

Network-level mechanisms underlying effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on visuomotor learning in schizophrenia.

Motor learning is a fundamental skill to our daily lives. Dysfunction in motor performance in schizophrenia (Sz) has been associated with poor social and functional outcomes. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive electrical brain stimulation approach, can influence underlying brain function with potential for improving motor learning in Sz. We used a well-established Serial Reaction Time Task (SRTT) to study motor learning, in combination with simultaneous tDCS and EEG recording, to investigate mechanisms of motor and procedural learning deficits in Sz, and to develop

Preclinical diagnosis of wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy in a patient undergoing carpal tunnel release.

Wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTRwt-CM) has received increased attention because of its novel treatment options. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is known as early symptoms in transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) preceding cardiac involvement and one of the "red flags" for ATTR-CM. A 64-year-old man underwent carpal tunnel release for carpal tunnel syndrome at 62 years. He was diagnosed with wild-type ATTR due to deposition of transthyretin (TTR) amyloid in flexor tenosynovium specimens and no TTR gene mutation. Examination for detection of cardiac involvement was performed after th

Contextual interference enhances vertical transfer of fine motor skill from upper to lower limbs.

BACKGROUND: While contextual interference (CI) is known to facilitate motor learning, its role in promoting interlimb transfer-particularly from the upper to the lower limb-remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study examined how different practice schedules (random vs. serial) influence the transfer of fine force control both horizontally (to the contralateral hand) and vertically (to the contralateral ankle). METHODS: Thirty healthy young adults (N = 30; Male = 21, Female = 9; Mean age: 21.9 ± 1.6 years) were divided equally into a random (RTG: N = 15) or serial (STG: N = 15) schedule gro

Story recall performance and AT classification via positron emission tomography: A comparison of logical memory and Craft Story 21.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the critical components of the global response to the growing dementia crisis. Analysis of serial position performance in story recall tests has yielded sensitive metrics for the prediction of AD at low cost. In this study, we examined whether serial position markers in two story recall tests (the logical memory test, LMT, and the Craft Story 21 test, CST) were sensitive to cross-sectional biomarker-based assessment of in vivo neuropathology. METHODS: Participants were selected from the Wisconsin Registry of Alzheimer's Prevent
