Survey on coenurosis in sheep and goats in Egypt.

A total of 75 sheep and goats from apparently healthy and from clinically affected flocks were examined for Coenurus cerebralis cysts from different localities in Egypt. Of 25 animals examined from clinically diseased sheep and goats, 25 (100%) revealed the presence of infestation with one to four coenuri in the brain. The sites of predilection were the left hemisphere (48%), followed by the right hemisphere (40%) and the cerebellum (12%). There was no apparent effect of the age of sheep and goats on susceptibility to infestation with C. cerebralis. Another 50 animals from apparently healthy s

Tracheal replacement with a bioabsorbable scaffold in sheep.

BACKGROUND: A significant native tracheal approximation phenomenon was observed in our previous study [Tsukada H, Ernst A, Gangadharan S, et al. Tracheal replacement with a silicone-stented fresh aortic allograft in sheep. Ann Thorac Surg 2010;89:253-8], in which sheep trachea was replaced with an allogenic aortic graft in order to attempt transplantation. Because an appropriate tracheal replacement graft has yet to be determined, other means to repair or replace tracheal tissue have to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to test a bioabsorbable scaffold for temporary tracheal grafting. M

Osteopenia in the maxillofacial area: a study in sheep.

UNLABELLED: Osteoporosis is a major public health problem worldwide. Its significance in the fields of traumatology and implantology of the maxillofacial area requires investigation. A large animal model was used to assess bone loss in the lumbar spine and mandible. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a prevalent disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue. Osteoporosis-related fractures represent a major public health burden. The presence and relevance of osteoporosis in the maxillofacial area remain controversial. Research in humans is limited by dif

Molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium in Brazilian sheep.

Feces were collected from 125 sheep between January and December 2007, on ten farms in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium. Ninety samples were collected from lambs 2 to 6 months of age, and 35 were from sheep over 12 months of age. All samples were subjected to molecular analysis by polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR) in two steps of the SSU rRNA. Two samples (1.6%) from the lambs were positive, and after sequencing were identified as Cryptosporidium ubiquitum. This species has been reported worldwide and it is considered a zoonotic pathoge

Insulin alters the permeability of sheep pleura.

AIM: Insulin promotes ion transportation across epithelia, mainly kidneys, leading to water and electrolyte abnormalities, possibly causing 'insulin oedema syndrome', which rarely presents as pleural effusion. Direct stimulation of sheep pleura by insulin and the possible electrophysiology mechanisms involved were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sheep visceral and parietal pleural specimens were mounted between Ussing chambers. Insulin solutions (10 (-9) to 10 (-5) M), L-NAME, Nitroprussid sodium, amiloride and ouabain were used. Trans-mesothelial Resistance was determined. Immunohistoche

Pathology of inherited rickets in Corriedale sheep.

A skeletal disease with features of rickets and simple autosomal recessive inheritance has been discovered in Corriedale sheep in New Zealand. The clinical signs resemble rickets in other species and include decreased growth rate, thoracic lordosis and angular limb deformities. Gross lesions include segmental thickening of physes, growth arrest lines, collapse of subchondral bone of the humeral head, thickened cortices and enthesophytes around distal limb joints. Microscopically, there is persistence of hypertrophic chondrocytes at sites of endochondral ossification, inappropriate and excessiv

Coevolution of endogenous betaretroviruses of sheep and their host.

Sheep betaretroviruses offer a unique model system to study the complex interaction between retroviruses and their host. Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) is a pathogenic exogenous retrovirus and the causative agent of ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The sheep genome contains at least 27 copies of endogenous retroviruses (enJSRVs) highly related to JSRV. enJSRVs have played several roles in the evolution of the domestic sheep as they are able to block the JSRV replication cycle and play a critical role in sheep conceptus development and placental morphogenesis. Available data strongly suggest

Distribution of Cryptosporidium species in sheep in the UK.

There have been few studies of the distribution of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in sheep, and the anthropozoonotic potential has been questioned since one of the major human pathogens, Cryptosporidium parvum, is not always found. To investigate the situation in the UK we undertook three studies: a reactive sampling programme of flocks identified as exposures for human cases of cryptosporidiosis; investigation of neonatal cryptosporidiosis in lambs; and a screening programme of lambs at an open farm. C. parvum was the only species found in neonatal lambs with cryptosporidiosis and pred

Sheep management and cryptosporidiosis in central Mexico.

To establish the association between sheep farm management practices and cryptosporidiosis in Central Mexico, 37 farms were invited and questionnaires answered by owners. Faeces samples were taken from lambs under 3 months old and ewes in the farms. Parasites were identified by modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain. Questionnaire included: general farm information, facilities characteristics, facilities cleaning measures, water use and farm and animal management practices. Farms were grouped in a low ( Pound 3,37%), medium (3.38-49.9%) and high basis ((3)50%) according to prevalence. Associations (OR)

D-aspartate and reproductive activity in sheep.

D-aspartic acid (D-Asp) has been isolated from neuroendocrine tissues of many invertebrates and vertebrates. Recently, it has been demonstrated that this D-amino acid may be converted to N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA), a neuromodulator associated with sexual activity. In this study, we determined D-Asp and NMDA concentrations in endocrine glands and other tissues in ewes after D-Asp administration and in controls. We also evaluated the effects of d-Asp administration on the reproductive activity of ewes by determining either progesterone concentrations or LH pulses in the presence or absence

Immunity to experimental neosporosis in pregnant sheep.

Neospora caninum is an important cause of fetal loss in cattle but has also infrequently been shown to cause disease in sheep and goats. Experimental infection of pregnant sheep with N. caninum causes clinical and pathological changes very similar to those of neosporosis in cattle. An experiment in sheep was undertaken to examine whether infection with N. caninum before pregnancy conferred immunity to subsequent challenge with the parasite during pregnancy. Primary inoculation of NC1 tachyzoites subcutaneously, either before or during pregnancy, caused a significant temperature response in ewe

Strategies for the avoidance of faeces by grazing sheep.

Experiments were conducted to investigate which environmental cues were used by sheep when discriminating against patches of pasture contaminated with faeces. The influence of the spatial distribution of contaminated patches and the parasite infection status of sheep on avoidance of contaminated patches and ingestion of parasite larvae was also investigated. In experiment 1, sheep infected with the parasite Ostertagia circumcincta were given the opportunity to graze in uncontaminated or aggregated contaminated patches. Patch contamination comprised of either faeces from sheep infected with O.

Surgical treatment of coenurosis (gid) in sheep.

During the past six years 623 cases of coenurosis (gid) in sheep have been treated surgically. Cysts were removed successfully from 573 of them (92 per cent) and 517 (83 per cent) were able to return to their flocks, although 36 showed no clinical improvement In 37 cases, the cyst could not be localised, and postmortem examinations showed that in nine cases the cyst was in the brainstem, and in 28 cases it was in the cerebellum. Fifty-six cases deteriorated gradually after surgery and in these cases more than one cyst was found postmortem. Thirteen cases died during surgery.

Contagious ecthyma associated with myiasis in sheep.

A severe outbreak of contagious ecthyma (orf) is described in sheep in Saudi Arabia. In some of the affected sheep, the condition was highly aggravated by myiasis which appeared to have been favoured by the abundance of flies during the hot season. The outbreak is discussed in relation to the epidemiology of the disease in Saudi Arabia.

Status of Dorper sheep as hosts of ectoparasites.

Seventeen ixodid tick species or subspecies have been collected from Dorper sheep in South Africa. The diseases transmitted or the conditions caused by these ticks in sheep are discussed. Although Dorper sheep may be infested with the scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, this does not seem to cause production losses. These sheep may, however, serve as a source of mite infestation for woolled sheep. The majority of Dorper sheep are infested with the larvae of the nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis, they may also be subject to myiasis caused by the larvae of two calliphorid flies. In certain regions of the count

Ileoileal intussusception associated with coccidiosis in sheep.

Postmortem examination of a 3-year-old male Iranian native sheep with a history of anorexia and severe colic, revealed an intussusception of the small intestine, 30 cm proximal to the ileocaecal junction. Scattered hyperplastic lesions were present in the jejunal and ileal mucosa especially in intussuscipien. Microscopic examination of these lesions showed severe papillary hyperplasia of the epithelium associated with developmental stages of coccidia in the epithelial cells. An unusual type of intussusception and the presence of the proliferative nodular form of coccidiosis in the intestinal w

Elaeophorosis in bighorn sheep in New Mexico.

Two bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in New Mexico (USA) were found to be naturally infected with Elaeophora schneideri. An adult ram examined in 1997 in the Fra Cristobal Mountains had 26 nematodes in the carotid and iliac arteries, and microfilariae were present in the skin, nasal mucosa, brain, and lungs. This ram was markedly debilitated prior to euthanasia and extensive crusty, scabby lesions were observed on its head. In 1998, a yearling ewe found dead adjacent to Watson Mountain near the Gila Wilderness area was found to have 13 nematodes present in its heart. This is the first report of

Tularemia: a case transmitted from a sheep.

Tularemia is an arthropod-borne infectious disease caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative microorganism that normally resides in a wide range of wild and domestic animals. The disease is characterized by a sudden onset with high fever, headache, malaise, chills, myalgia, and arthralgia. A short time after exposure, an inflamed and ulcerated lesion rapidly appears at the site of entry. A regional lymphadenopathy follows the cutaneous presentation. Cultures from the lesions or blood generally give negative results. Histopathologic examination reveals either a nonspecific inflammatory
