Iatrogenic nerve injury in primary and revision reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Iatrogenic nerve injury in orthopedic surgery can impair functional outcomes. During the last years, a steady increase in the number of performed reverse total shoulder arthroplasties has been reported and complications associated with this procedure are continuously described. Neurological complications, however, remain underreported. The aims of this study were to calculate the incidence of iatrogenic nerve injury after primary and revision reverse total shoulder arthroplasty in a large patient cohort, as well as identify associated patient-and surgery-related risk factors. [Tendon transfers around the shoulder for patient with brachial plexus injury sequels].

Brachial plexus lesions can significantly affect patient function. The type of management will depend on the severity of the injury as well as the anatomical location. Tendon transfers around the shoulder have emerged as an effective treatment alternative, and therefore we should consider them when faced with patients who might require it. There are various transfer techniques, within which the most frequently used are upper trapezium, latissimus dorsi and lower trapezium transfers, each with its specific indications and objectives depending on the type of patient. These surgeries aim to decre

Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA): An Occupational Case Report.

Transient shoulder pain is a common complaint following intramuscular vaccine administration into the deltoid. More severe vaccination-associated shoulder complications comprising of weakness and decreased range of motion are categorized under the construct "shoulder injury related to vaccine administration" (SIRVA) that subsumes both subjective and objective findings consistent with injury. We describe the presentation and management of a case of SIRVA in a health care worker following seasonal influenza vaccine administration as part of a hospital-based employee health program and review the

Risk factors for shoulder pain and injury in swimmers: A critical systematic review.

Swimming is one of the most popular recreational and competitive sporting activities. In the 2013/2014 swimming season, 9630 men and 12,333 women were registered with the National Collegiate Athletics Association in the USA. The repetitive nature of the swimming stroke and demanding training programs of its athletes raises a number of concerns regarding incidence and severity of injuries that a swimmer might experience during a competitive season. A number of risk factors have previously been identified but the level of evidence from individual studies, as well as the level of certainty that t

Spinal cord injury following operative shoulder intervention: A case report.

CONTEXT: Cervical myelopathy is a spinal cord dysfunction that results from extrinsic compression of the spinal cord, its blood supply, or both. It is the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction in patients greater than 55 years of age. FINDINGS: A 57-year-old male with right shoulder septic arthritis underwent surgical debridement of his right shoulder and sustained a spinal cord injury intraoperatively. The most likely etiology is damage to the cervical spinal cord during difficult intubation requiring multiple attempts in this patient with underlying asymptomatic severe cervical steno

Primiparity: a risk factor for brachial plexus injury in the presence of shoulder dystocia?

The objective of the study was to assess the risk factors associated with obstetric brachial plexus injury. It was a retrospective analysis over a 7-year period, of women whose labours were either complicated by shoulder dystocia or had neonates who sustained brachial plexus injury. The 133 women included were divided into two groups: (1) Non-brachial plexus injury (Non-BPI) group: 106 women with labours complicated by shoulder dystocia. (2) Brachial plexus injury (BPI) group: 27 women whose neonates sustained BPI. Comparison of ante-partum, intra-partum and post-partum factors was done. In th

Injury patterns to other body regions and load vectors in nearside impact occupants with and without shoulder injuries.

CIREN and NASS-CDS databases were used to analyze nearside impact injuries. Front seat occupants with and without shoulder injuries were examined on an individual basis in both databases. All vehicles were from model year 2000 or newer. Variables such as the type of collision, change in velocity, principal direction force, demographics, injuries scored by the MAIS and ISS metrics, and injuries to the head, thorax, abdomen and pelvis were included. Shoulder injuries included fractures to the humerus, scapula and clavicle, and associated joint traumas. The median changes in velocities for occupa

A Clinician's Guide to Evaluating and Managing Shoulder Overuse Injury in Softball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one-third of softball pitchers sustain a pitching-related injury across a single season, with the throwing shoulder being the most frequently injured site. Overuse is a commonly proposed mechanism given the repetitive and high-stress placed on the biceps-labral complex. CLINICAL QUESTION: How can clinicians evaluate and manage shoulder overuse injury in softball pitchers? KEY RESULTS: Clinical evaluation of softball pitchers should include a comprehensive patient history, physical examination, and appropriate imaging. Understanding injury mechanisms and risks will hel
