Automated identification of ERP peaks through Dynamic Time Warping: an application to developmental dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: This article proposes a method to automatically identify and label event-related potential (ERP) components with high accuracy and precision. METHODS: We present a framework, referred to as peak-picking Dynamic Time Warping (ppDTW), where a priori knowledge about the ERPs under investigation is used to define a reference signal. We developed a combination of peak-picking and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) that makes the temporal intervals for peak-picking adaptive on the basis of the morphology of the data. We tested the procedure on experimental data recorded from a control group and

Enhanced chemiluminescent determination of chloramphenicol and related nitro compounds by 'on-line' photochemical reaction.

The viability of tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection was studied for a heterogeneous family of nitro compounds using chloramphenicol as a test substance. The 'on-line' chemical photodegradation of chloramphenicol was performed in a flow injection assembly by using a photoreactor consisting of a 725 cm x 0.5 mm id piece of PTFE tubing coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded chloramphenicol was detected by oxidizing photo-fragments from the parent compound and their subsequent reaction with a luminol-Co(II) system. The calibration graph was linear up t

Analysis of the coil generated impulse noise in extracranial magnetic stimulation.

An intense impulse noise artifact is generated by the coil used in extracranial magnetic stimulation (EMS) of the brain and cranial nerves. In this study we measured and analyzed the sound pressure level (SPL), spectral content, wave form, and time course of the magnetic coil acoustic artifact (MCAA) impulse noise in the sound field and in the ear canal of life-size models of the human cranium. Two different clinical magnetic stimulators and coils were used. Sound field measurements from both coils showed the MCAA to be a transient impulse noise with a rapid rise-time, brief duration, broad ac

Towards integrating temporal information in capsule endoscopy image analysis.

Analysis of Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (CE) images has become a very active area of research since this novel technology enabled access to previously inaccessible areas of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the small intestine. Art has investigated automatic segmentation of organ boundaries, detection of lesions and bleeding as well as other supervised and unsupervised analysis. However, all of this art has focused on treating the images as individual and independent observations that contribute towards a unique and separate decision. Given the overlap between the images, this is clearly n

A nonrigid registration algorithm for longitudinal breast MR images and the analysis of breast tumor response.

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) can estimate parameters relating to blood flow and tissue volume fractions and therefore may be used to characterize the response of breast tumors to treatment. To assess treatment response, values of these DCE-MRI parameters are observed at different time points during the course of treatment. We propose a method whereby DCE-MRI data sets obtained in separate imaging sessions can be co-registered to a common image space, thereby retaining spatial information so that serial DCE-MRI parameter maps can be compared on a voxel-by-voxel

Speech enhancement method integrating squeeze and excitation channel attention mechanism and improved CGAN.

To avoid the additional computational cost and algorithmic latency introduced by short-time Fourier transformation and waveform reconstruction, we propose CGAN-SECA, which incorporates a squeeze-and-excitation channel attention mechanism to enhance noisy speech directly in the time domain. The generator employs a symmetric encoder-decoder backbone with skip connections to reconstruct waveform samples and reduce information loss during down-sampling and up-sampling. SECA adaptively recalibrates channel-wise feature responses, enabling the network to emphasize speech-relevant representations und

Analysis of superimposed ultrasonic guided waves in long bones by the joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrices algorithm.

The parameters of ultrasonic guided waves (GWs) are very sensitive to mechanical and structural changes in long cortical bones. However, it is a challenge to obtain the group velocity and other parameters of GWs because of the presence of mixed multiple modes. This paper proposes a blind identification algorithm using the joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrices (JADE) and applies it to the separation of superimposed GWs in long bones. For the simulation case, the velocity of the single mode was calculated after separation. A strong agreement was obtained between the estimated veloc

The heart sound classification of congenital heart disease by using median EEMD-Hurst and threshold denoising method.

Heart sound signals are vital for the machine-assisted detection of congenital heart disease. However, the performance of diagnostic results is limited by noise during heart sound acquisition. A limitation of existing noise reduction schemes is that the pathological components of the signal are weak, which have the potential to be filtered out with the noise. In this research, a novel approach for classifying heart sounds based on median ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD), Hurst analysis, improved threshold denoising, and neural networks are presented. In decomposing the heart sound

STORM image denoising and information extraction.

Stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) is extensively utilized in the fields of cell and molecular biology as a super-resolution imaging technique for visualizing cells and molecules. Nonetheless, the imaging process of STORM is frequently susceptible to noise, which can significantly impact the subsequent image analysis. Moreover, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive automated processing approach for analyzing protein aggregation states from a large number of STORM images. This paper initially applies our previously proposed denoising algorithm, UNet-Att, in STORM image

Bayesian MRI denoising in complex domain.

In recent years, several efforts have been done for producing Magnetic Resonance Image scanner with higher magnetic field strength mainly for increasing the Signal to Noise Ratio and the Contrast to Noise Ratio of the acquired images. However, denoising methodologies still play an important role for achieving images neatness. Several denoising algorithms have been presented in literature. Some of them exploit the statistical characteristics of the involved noise, some others project the image in a transformed domain, some others look for geometrical properties of the image. However, the common

Hybrid Transformer for Early Alzheimer's Detection: Integration of Handwriting-Based 2D Images and 1D Signal Features.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative condition where early detection is vital. Handwriting, often affected early in AD, offers a non-invasive and cost-effective way to capture subtle motor changes. State-of-the-art research on handwriting, mostly online, based AD detection has predominantly relied on manually extracted features, fed as input to shallow machine learning models. Some recent works have proposed deep learning (DL)-based models, either 1D-CNN or 2D-CNN architectures, with performance comparing favorably to handcrafted schemes. These approaches, however, overloo

A new technique to control brushless motor for blood pump application.

This article presents a back-electromotive force (BEMF)-based technique of detection for sensorless brushless direct current motor (BLDCM) drivers. The BLDCM has been chosen as the energy converter in rotary or pulsatile blood pumps that use electrical motors for pumping. However, in order to operate properly, the BLDCM driver needs to know the shaft position. Usually, that information is obtained through a set of Hall sensors assembled close to the rotor and connected to the electronic controller by wires. Sometimes, a large distance between the motor and controller makes the system susceptib

MSHANet: A Multiscale Hybrid Attention Network for Motor Imagery EEG Decoding.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has significant applications in neurorehabilitation and motor function restoration, especially for patients with stroke or spinal cord injury. Motor imagery electroencephalography (MI-EEG) is widely used in BCIs, but its nonlinear dynamics and inter-subject variability limit decoding accuracy. In this paper, a multiscale hybrid attention network (MSHANet) for MI-EEG decoding, which consists of spatiotemporal feature extraction (STFE), talking head self-attention (THSA), dynamic squeeze-and-excitation attention (DSEA), and a temporal convolutional netwo

Assessment of pain expression in infant cry signals using empirical mode decomposition.

BACKGROUND: The presence of decoupling, i.e. the absence of coupling between fundamental frequency variation and intensity contour during phonetic crying, and its extent, reflects the degree of maturation of the central nervous system. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to evaluate whether Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is a suitable technique for analyzing infant cries. We hereby wanted to assess the existence and extent of decoupling in term neonates and whether an association between decoupling (derived from EMD) and clinical pain expression could be unveiled. METHODS: To assess dec

Transmission of crackles in patients with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, congestive heart failure, and pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) often have diffusely abnormal findings on chest radiographs, making it difficult to detect evidence of superimposed congestive heart failure (CHF) or pneumonia. The goal of this study was to determine whether the crackles of IPF differed in their transmission and frequency from crackles of CHF and pneumonia in the hope of improving diagnosis and monitoring of these patients. METHODS: A multichannel lung sound analyzer was used to collect 20-s samples of sound from 25 patients with pneumonia, 17 patients with CHF, and 19 patients w

Testing a signal-processing image analysis technology in hospital on suspicious pigmented naevi referred for biopsy.

Four versions of the novel Moletest on-device signal-processing analysis software, delivered on a single-application iPadPro11, were evaluated in pigmented skin lesions of patients sent for biopsy comparing its results with the lesion histology. The primary objective was to demonstrate that the nomela® test provided at least 95 ± 2% sensitivity for not-melanoma. Proprietary software recognised the lesion perimeter, rejecting images with uncertain border, and performed analysis using non-scalar metrics of the image within the perimeter. From five algorithms any one reading outside the predefine

Application of nonlinear methods to discriminate fractionated electrograms in paroxysmal versus persistent atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAE) may contain information concerning the electrophysiological substrate of atrial fibrillation (AF); therefore they are of interest to guide catheter ablation treatment of AF. Electrogram signals are shaped by activation events, which are dynamical in nature. This makes it difficult to establish those signal properties that can provide insight into the ablation site location. Nonlinear measures may improve information. To test this hypothesis, we used nonlinear measures to analyze CFAE. METHODS: CFAE from several atrial s

Detecting mutual awareness events.

It is quite common that multiple human observers attend to a single static interest point. This is known as a mutual awareness event (MAWE). A preferred way to monitor these situations is with a camera that captures the human observers while using existing face detection and head pose estimation algorithms. The current work studies the underlying geometric constraints of MAWEs and reformulates them in terms of image measurements. The constraints are then used in a method that 1) detects whether such an interest point does exist, 2) determines where it is located, 3) identifies who was attendin

Assessment of pulmonary artery stenosis using freehand "flock of birds" digital color three-dimensional echocardiographic reconstruction.

Pulmonary artery (PA) trunk or branch PA stenosis is commonly found in patients with congenital heart disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the freehand "Flock of Birds" color Doppler three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction on a modeled-segment imitating PA stenosis. First, a PA model was created from latex tubes to simulate the main PA and its main branches with baseline cross-sectional areas (CSA) of 0.7 cm2. A series of narrowed segments in the right and left PA were created. The cross-sections of the smallest area ranged from 0.13 to 0.59 cm2 and stenotic segmental length ran

Phantom evaluation of small-pixel effect in ultra-high-resolution photon-counting CT: Noise texture and high-contrast spatial resolution.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-high-resolution (UHR) photon-counting CT (PCCT) with small-pixel detectors improves resolution and noise, but its dependence on diverse imaging conditions remains insufficiently characterized. PURPOSE: To systematically evaluate the small-pixel effect in UHR PCCT by assessing noise properties and high-contrast spatial resolution under varying acquisition and reconstruction conditions. METHODS: Images of an ACR CT accreditation phantom with a body ring simulating a medium-sized patient were acquired on a clinical PCCT system (NAEOTOM Alpha.Peak, Siemens Healthineers, Germany
