STUDY OBJECTIVES: We examined electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral power to study abnormalities in regional brain activity in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during sleep. We aimed to identify sleep EEG markers of PTSD that were reproducible across nights and subsamples of our study population.
METHODS: Seventy-eight combat-exposed veteran men with (n = 31) and without (n = 47) PTSD completed two consecutive nights of high-density EEG recordings in a laboratory. We performed spectral-topographical EEG analyses on data from both nights. To assess reproducibility, we used the first 47 cons

Periventricular leukomalacia is the most common type of brain injury in premature infants. Our aim is to describe the frequency and the features of epilepsy in a single-center population of 137 children with periventricular leukomalacia. Forty-two of the 137 (31%) patients presented epilepsy. Twelve percent of these patients presented West syndrome, whereas 19% showed a pattern of continuous spike-waves during slow sleep syndrome. In the latter group, outcome was frequently unfavorable, with a greater number of seizures and more drug resistance. A significant association was found between epil

Background: An electroencephalogram (EEG) is an accepted method in neurophysiology with a wide application. Different types of brain rhythms indicate that simultaneous activity of the brain cortex neurons depend on the person's mental state. Method: we have focus on reviewing the existing literature pertaining to changes of the brain's bioelectrical activity that recorded from the scalp in different conditions such as cognition and some mental disorders. Result: The frequency of brain waves may indicate sleep, consciousness, cognition, and some mental disorders. Slow brain waves are seen in so

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Animal sleep deprivation (SDEP), in contrast to human SDEP, is involuntary and involves repeated exposure to aversive stimuli including the inability of the animal to control the waking stimulus. Therefore, we explored intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS), an operant behavior, as a method for voluntary SDEP in rodents.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with electroencephalography/electromyography (EEG/EMG) recording electrodes and a unilateral bipolar electrode into the lateral hypothalamus. Rats were allowed to self-stimulate, or underwent gentle handling-ind

Previously, we found that regular sleep fragmentation, similar to that found in patients with sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS), impairs daytime function. Apnoeas and hypopnoeas occur in groups in patients with REM or posture related SAHS. Thus, we hypothesised that clustered sleep fragmentation would have a similar impact on daytime function as regular sleep fragmentation. We studied 16 subjects over two pairs of 2 nights and 2 days. The first night of each pair was for acclimatisation. On the second night, subjects either had their sleep fragmented regularly every 90 s, or fragmented ev

PURPOSE: The objective was to determine the separate and combined effects of hypoxia and inactivity/unloading on sleep architecture during a 10-day period of confinement.
METHODS: Ten subjects participated in three 10-day trials in random order: hypoxic ambulatory (HAMB), hypoxic bedrest (HBR), and normoxic bedrest (NBR). During the HAMB and HBR trials, subjects were confined to a hypoxic facility. The hypoxia profile was: simulated altitude of 2,990 m on day 1, 3,380 m on day 2, and 3,881 m on day 3. In the NBR and HBR trials, subjects maintained a horizontal position throughout the confinem

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep degrades with age, and more severely in Alzheimer's disease (AD). REM sleep comprises about twenty percent of adult sleep, alternates between phasic and tonic periods, and includes delta waves (1-4Hz) in two forms: fast sawtooth waves and slower, NREM-like waves, whose expression dynamically varies across REM periods. Yet, the functional relevance of these REM sleep delta waves remains unknown. Here, using two independent cohorts, we show that aging is associated with a shift from fast sawtooth to slow NREM-like delta waves, particularly during phasic REM sleep-a

In summary, the classical sleep disorders of nocturnal enuresis, somnambulism, the nightmare, and the sleep terror occur preferentially during arousal from slow-wave sleep and are virtually never associated with the rapid-eye-movement dreaming state. Original data are reported here which indicate that physiological differences from normal subjects, of a type predisposing the individual to a particular attack pattern, are present throughout the night. The episode, at least in the case of enuresis, appears to be simply a reinforcement of these differences to a clinically overt level. A number of

Cortical slow waves are hallmark oscillations of deep sleep and certain anesthetic conditions, yet the neurobiological mechanisms controlling their dynamics remain incompletely understood. Here, we investigated the effects of local near-infrared (NIR) stimulation on slow-wave activity in ketamine/xylazine-anesthetized rats. Using a silicon-based multimodal optrode, we simultaneously delivered NIR light and recorded local field potentials (LFPs) and multi-unit activity (MUA) across cortical layers in the primary somatosensory (S1Tr) and parietal association (PtA) cortices. NIR stimulation induc

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Objective physiologic data on sleep and nocturnal breathing at initial exposure and during acclimatization to high altitude are scant. We tested the hypothesis that acute exposure to high altitude induces quantitative and qualitative changes in sleep and that these changes are partially reversed with acclimatization.
DESIGN: Prospective observation.
SETTING: One night in a sleep laboratory at 490 meters, the first and the third night in a mountain hut at 4559 meters.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen healthy mountaineers.
INTERVENTION: Altitude exposure.
MEASUREMENTS: Polysomnography

Previous history of activity and learning modulates synaptic plasticity and can lead to saturation of synaptic connections. According to the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis, neural oscillations during slow-wave sleep play an important role in restoring plasticity within a functional range. However, it is not known whether slow-wave oscillations-without the concomitant requirement of sleep-play a causal role in human synaptic homeostasis. Here, we aimed to answer this question using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to induce slow-oscillatory activity in awake human participan

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic central sleep apnea (ICSA) is categorized as a type of nonhypercapnic central sleep apnea (CSA). Recurrent cessation and resumption of respiration leads to sleep fragmentation, which causes excessive daytime sleepiness, frequent nocturnal awakenings, or both. ICSA has been described in the adult population but there is limited information in children. The purpose of this study was to describe clinical manifestations and polysomnographic findings in children with ICSA.
METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records and polysomnograms was performed for 14 pediat

Severe obstructive sleep apnea in a patient with achondroplasia syndrome was found to result in a definitive deficiency of overnight growth hormone secretion related to absence of slow-wave sleep. Resolution of the apnea by tracheostomy resulted in normalization of growth hormone release and normal growth rates postoperatively. Sleep-related growth hormone deficiency may contribute to the short stature so often seen in a variety of craniofacial syndromes. Furthermore, this short stature may be reversible.
