Thrombotic microangiopathy due to Viperidae bite: Two case reports.

Snake bite is mainly an occupational hazard and causes serious health problems in rural India. Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in 5-30% cases. Renal pathologic findings include acute tubular necrosis, cortical necrosis, interstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis, and vasculitis. Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) occurrence after a snake bite is reported rarely. Here, we present two patients who developed TMA after viper bite treated with hemodialysis and plasmapheresis. Renal biopsy showed fibrin thrombi in glomeruli and arterioles with cortical necrosis. One patient progressed to end-stage re

Locked-in syndrome as a presentation of snakebite.

Snake bite is a common condition in tropical countries. Neurotoxic features of snake bite vary from early morning neuroparalytic syndrome to various cranial nerve palsies. Locked in syndrome (LIS) is a rare presentation. We present four children that had LIS; three patients had total and one had incomplete LIS. All patients made successful recovery with polyvalent anti-snake venom and supportive management. This case series highlights the importance of early diagnosis of LIS in snake bite.

[The composition, biochemical properties and toxicity of snake venoms].

2.5 million cases of snake bites are noticed in the world every year (within 100,000 is mortal). These bites occur frequently in Asia and Africa. Some reports proved the toxicity and composition changes of well-known venoms from the same snake species according to the climatic zone. Snake venom is a natural source of many biologically active substances, including those with potential therapeutic properties. These substances contain peptides, proteins, and enzymes which are divided into five subfamilies: three-finger toxins, serine protease inhibitors of the Kunitz type, phospholipases A2, seri

An Analysis of Media-Reported Venomous Snakebites in the United States, 2011-2013.

BACKGROUND: Venomous snakebite is a widespread natural hazard in the United States. A common perception exists that the majority of these snakebites are "illegitimate," resulting from deliberate interaction with snakes (such as attempting to move or kill the animal), but there is little quantitative information available regarding the conditions under which bites occur. METHODS: To better understand the circumstances under which victims are bitten, we compiled a dataset of media-reported snakebites in the United States between 2011 and 2013. A total of 332 reported snakebites were recorded. O

Clinical features of puff adder envenoming: case series of Bitis arietans snakebites in Kenya and a scoping review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: The puff adder (Bitis arietans) is a medically important snake species found across much of Africa, yet there is limited literature on the clinical features and pathophysiology of envenoming after a puff adder bite. METHODS: We conducted a case-series study to describe the clinical features of patients with puff adder bites who were treated in two primary healthcare facilities in Kenya and complemented our case-series with a scoping review of all published cases of puff adder envenoming that contained sufficient clinical details to highlight the major features. RESULTS: Between

Snake poisoning in rural Zimbabwe--a prospective study.

Over a period of 2 years (January 1991 to December 1992) 274 cases of snake bite were admitted to hospital in the eight provinces of Zimbabwe. Of these patients, 54% were males and 88% belonged to the 6-40-year age group. Five deaths (1.8% of the total cases) were reported. The majority of snake bites (63%) occurred at night (between 6.30 p.m. and midnight) and over 74% took place during the hot rainy season, i.e. between November and April. In over 58% of the cases the victim accidentally stepped on the snake, the snake being cobra in 37%, puff adder in 20% and the black and green mamba in 18

Diagnosis of envenomation by Russell's and Echis carinatus viper: A clinical study at rural Maharashtra state of India.

BACKGROUND: Envenoming by vipers Russell's and Echis Carinatus are common accidents faced by farmers and labors. Both viper venom toxins alter coagulation mechanism in the victim. The dose of snake antivenin to neutralize the venom is empirical and varies. Though the clinical manifestations in both vipers bite envenoming are nearly similar but dose of antivenin required is more in Russell's viper. We studied in detail about the correlation of clinical manifestations and confirmed species of snake. METHODS: Cases of vipers snake bites admitted for last two successive years were studied. Analys

A Review on Venom Enzymes Neutralizing Ability of Secondary Metabolites from Medicinal Plants.

OBJECTIVES: Medicinal plants are vital sources of bioactive compounds that are useful for the treatment of patients with snake bites or are indirectly applicable for boosting the effects of conventional serum therapy. These plants are being used traditionally by local healers and tribes for the treatment of patients with snake bites and therefore can be used as an alternative against snake envenomation. Scientifically, using the secondary metabolites of plants to neutralize venom enzymes has an extra benefit of being based on traditional knowledge; also, the use of such metabolites for the tre

A rare case of Panophthalmitis due to cobra bite.

PURPOSE: Ocular manifestations of snake bite are rare, ranging from direct injury to the eye from snake venom or indirect injury due to antivenom. We report a rare case of cobra bite causing panophthalmitis due to indirect injury as a result of snake venom toxin related tissue necrosis and susceptibility to secondary infections. METHODS: Observational case report. External photographs, slit lamp photos, ultrasonography of the eye and histopathology of the eviscerated eye were used to characterize and describe the clinical findings. Thirty-nine-years-old male farmer presented with history of c

Local envenoming by the Schokari sand racer, Psammophis schokari Forskål, 1775 (Serpentes, Psammophiidae) and a brief review of reported bites by sand racers (Psammophis spp.).

A recent case of a bite by a psammophiid snake, Psammophis schokari, is described and analyzed. This is the first report of local envenoming by this species. The 1 m long P. schokari inflicted a protracted bite on the third digit, right hand of the male 59 year-old victim who developed mild, but locally progressive edema and persistent pain; full resolution required almost three months. All documented cases of bites by snakes of the genus Psammophis are briefly reviewed and discussed. Finally, we encourage the use of a standardized method to describe the observed symptoms of bites by non-front

Studies on the venom of Oxyuranus microlepidotus.

The Australian Small-scaled Snake, Oxyuranus microlepidotus , recently rediscovered, is the world's most venomous snake, with a murine LD50 of 0.01 mg/kg. Recently developed immunological techniques, combined with a whole animal model, have enabled us to measure accurately the mass of venom actually injected by a striking snake. The venom of this species contains at least six identified protein fractions, and one or more of these possesses potent neurotoxic action. An initial assessment of the molecular weights of each of these is reported. This study describes field biting experiments applica

Viber Snakebite Presenting with Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: A Very Rare Case Report from Somalia.

Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is an uncommon and potentially life-threatening neurological disorder that is often missed because its clinical and radiological symptoms are not specific. Snake bites are a rare cause of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis that must be recognized and treated promptly to improve survival. Here, we present a case of a 30-year-old male patient who had cerebral venous thrombosis after snake bite in the rural area of southern Somalia. After close monitoring with anticoagulation, the condition of the patient improved and discharged from the hospital with full of

Bites by Xenodon merremii (Wagler, 1824) and Xenodon neuwiedii (Günther, 1863) (Dipsadidae: Xenodontini) in São Paulo, Brazil: a retrospective observational study of 163 cases.

Despite the biological relevance and abundance of non-front-fanged colubroid snakes, little is known about their medical significance. Here, we describe the clinical, epidemiological, and biological aspects of bites by two colubroid species. We retrospectively analyzed cases of Xenodon merremii and Xenodon neuwiedii bites in which the offending snake was clearly identified. Analyses included variables related to the snake and the patient, including demographic data, clinical findings, and treatments. Of the 163 cases, 123 were bites by X. merremii and 40 by X. neuwiedii. Most bites occurred in

Bites and stings from venomous animals: a global overview.

Venomous and poisonous animals are a significant cause of global morbidity and mortality. This Seminar will cover selected aspects of these animals, their venoms/poisons, and their clinical impact on humankind, from a global perspective, but with a distinctive Australian flavor and a clinical emphasis. Venomous snakes are found throughout most of the world, including many oceans, and have evolved a variety of highly effective toxins and methods of delivery. Their impact on humans is considerable, most current data suggesting they cause in excess of 3 million bites per year with more than 150,0

Snakebite Causing Facial and Lingual Tremors: A Case Report.

Snakebite is a significant public health problem causing around 2.7 envenomations and 138,000 deaths globally. History may sometimes be unclear or misleading, which can cause a delay in diagnosis. Neuroparalytic, hemotoxic, and myotoxic are the common snake bite manifestations. Neuroparalytic snake bites rarely cause involuntary movements. Here we report a case of a 26-year-old female patient who sustained a snake bite and developed tremors in the face and tongue. She improved with mechanical ventilation, anti-snake venom, atropine-neostigmine, and calcium gluconate. She was discharged after s

A rare case of acute myocardial infarction with heart failure following hump-nosed viper bite in a Sri Lankan female.

BACKGROUND: Hump-nosed viper (Hypnale species) bites are an important cause of mortality and morbidity in southern India and Sri Lanka, accounting for 27 and 77% of venomous snake bites, respectively. Previously, we knew them to be moderately venomous snakes, primarily causing local envenomation. However, recent reports have indicated severe systemic envenomation incidents, which include hemostatic dysfunction, microangiopathic hemolysis, kidney injury, myocardial toxicity, and even death. The literature rarely reports cardiac manifestations from hump-nosed viper bites, and all reported cases
