Inglorious glorification and attachment: National and European identities as predictors of anti- and pro-immigrant attitudes.

Anti-immigrant attitudes are not only widespread among Eurosceptic nationalists, but also among people who feel that immigration threatens European values and identity. We therefore assumed that the connection between nationalism and xenophobia can only partially explain the rise of hostile attitudes in the post-2015 period. In two online surveys (N = 1,160), we compared how (a) glorification versus attachment and (b) national versus European identity can predict anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim attitudes in Hungary. In the first study, national and European glorification predicted higher anti-i

"Two souls, two thoughts," two self-schemas: double consciousness can have positive academic consequences for African Americans.

African Americans can experience a double consciousness-the two-ness of being an American and an African American. The present research hypothesized that: (a) double consciousness can function as 2 self-schemas-an independent self-schema tied to mainstream American culture and an interdependent self-schema tied to African American culture, and (b) U.S. educational settings can leverage an interdependent self-schema associated with African American culture through inclusive multicultural practices to facilitate positive academic consequences. First, a pilot experiment and Studies 1 and 2 provid

"What are you?" Multiracial individuals' responses to racial identification inquiries.

OBJECTIVES: Guided by a racial microaggression framework and utilizing a mixed-method approach, this study explores multiracial individuals' interpersonal experiences and perceptions of racial identification inquiries--queries directed toward them as others attempt to determine their racial background (e.g., "What are you?"). METHODS: As part of an online study, multiracial college students (n = 40) were presented with a hypothetical situation in which racial identification inquiries were delivered by a White, racial minority, or racially unspecified communicator. Qualitative analyses identif

Testing new identity models and processes in French-speaking adolescents and emerging adults students.

Developing a sense of identity is a crucial psychosocial task for young people. The purpose of this study was to evaluate identity development in French-speaking adolescents and emerging adults (in France and Switzerland) using a process-oriented model of identity formation including five dimensions (i.e., exploration in breadth, commitment making, exploration in depth, identification with commitment, and ruminative exploration). The study included participants from three different samples (total N = 2,239, 66.7 % women): two samples of emerging adult student and one sample of adolescents. Res

Stereotype threat and female communication styles.

A large body of research has documented the performance-debilitating effects of stereotype threat for individuals, but there is a paucity of research exploring interpersonal consequences of stereotype threat. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that stereotype threat would change the style in which women communicate. Results indicate that women who experience stereotype threat regarding leadership abilities react against the stereotype by adopting a more masculine communication style. Study 2 provides evidence that self-affirmation eliminates this effect of stereotype threat on women's commu

Becoming a vampire without being bitten: the narrative collective-assimilation hypothesis.

We propose the narrative collective-assimilation hypothesis--that experiencing a narrative leads one to psychologically become a part of the collective described within the narrative. In a test of this hypothesis, participants read passages from either a book about wizards (from the Harry Potter series) or a book about vampires (from the Twilight series). Both implicit and explicit measures revealed that participants who read about wizards psychologically became wizards, whereas those who read about vampires psychologically became vampires. The results also suggested that narrative collective

Cooperation versus competition in a mass emergency evacuation: a new laboratory simulation and a new theoretical model.

Virtual reality technology is argued to be suitable to the simulation study of mass evacuation behavior, because of the practical and ethical constraints in researching this field. This article describes three studies in which a new virtual reality paradigm was used, in which participants had to escape from a burning underground rail station. Study 1 was carried out in an immersion laboratory and demonstrated that collective identification in the crowd was enhanced by the (shared) threat embodied in emergency itself. In Study 2, high-identification participants were more helpful and pushed les

The clothes make the trans: region and geography in experiences of the body.

Written as an autoethnographic essay, the article explores the relationship between LGBT experience and geographic differences. The author discusses her experiences of forming a butch self while living in a suburban, subtropical environment and comparing herself to images of urban lesbian pop culture. If gender is performative, how do clothes permit us to or impede us from envisioning the body or being seen by others as butch/trans/masculine/multiple-gendered/diverse? Does the fashion uniform of the urban tranny boi and the publicizing of urban youth movements as the measure of LGBT experience

Adolescent aggression and differentiation of self: guided mindfulness meditation in the service of individuation.

This paper presents adolescent aggression as mediated by the level of differentiation of self. No research has directly addressed Bowen's notion that level of differentiation impacts child functioning including aggression. Level of differentiation is discussed in conjunction with social, gender and cultural norms as manifested in aggressive behavior. Female adolescent aggression is described as mainly relationship focused and expressed via verbal threats, intimidation and manipulation, while male aggression is described mainly as overt physical violence involving dominance and competitiveness.

Application of social identity theory in group therapy with stigmatized adults.

Social identity theory was applied in group therapy for adults with mild mental retardation. Social identity theory suggests that social group membership, also called collective identity, has an impact on self-esteem. Individuals will try to maintain self-esteem by viewing their social groups positively. This may not be possible for individuals who are members of a stigmatized group. However, it may be possible to enhance self-esteem by broadening one's awareness of collective identity. Furthermore, being able to positively view other individuals who are co-members of one's own stigmatized gro

Masculinity, femininity, academic performance, and health: further evidence concerning the androgyny controversy.

Spence and Helmreich's (1978) claim that individual differences in four components of achievement motivation (mastery, work, competitiveness, and personal unconcern) are attributable to masculinity and femininity rather than to gender was generally supported, with one exception: Masculinity was associated with competitiveness for males but not for females. Furthermore, competitive women were more likely than noncompetitive women to have mental and physical health problems, but there was no such difference for males. In general, masculinity emerged as a beneficial constellation of traits for bo

Inducing and measuring identity levels in professional rugby players during immersion in an interactive virtual environment.

During a game, players experience substantial affective fluctuations, particularly through cognitive appraisal processes, which notably involves self-categorisation process. However, designing a mental training programme using the contextual elements of a game is still a challenge. Moreover, social contexts can be recreated in virtual reality and it has been demonstrated that people tend to have realistic affective and behavioural reactions to it. In this study, we recreated, in virtual reality, one of the key contexts that players can encounter during a rugby game, a try. After an embodiment

Reconstructing professional identity under acculturative stress: A longitudinal case study of a transnational language teacher.

As global teacher mobility increases, transnational educators often encounter acculturative stress and challenges to their professional identity. However, the psychological processes through which adaptation unfolds over time remain underexplored. Drawing on Ecological Systems Theory and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, this study examines intercultural adaptation as a dynamic process shaped by changing environmental demands, cognitive appraisals, and coping responses. Using a longitudinal phenomenological case study design, the study followed an Asian English language teacher ove

Longitudinal Effects of Negative Ethnic-Racial Identity Affect on Internalizing Symptoms in Youth of Latiné Background Exposed to Interpersonal Trauma.

Objectives: Latiné youth in the US are at elevated risk for trauma exposure, but factors that contribute to their symptoms are not well studied. We examined the effects of interpersonal trauma (IPT) burden and negative affect about ethnic-racial identity (NERI-A) on internalizing symptoms following trauma exposure. Method: Participants were 1,006 US-born youth of Latiné background (mean age 15.4 years, 60% female at birth, and 70% identified as White) from the Childhood Trauma Research Network, a research consortium examining long-term outcomes of childhood trauma in Texas. Social Identity and Power: Older Adults as "Care Recipients" in Media Content on Family Care.

In the context of normalized forms of elder abuse and neglect in Canada, it is important to examine how constructions of family caregivers in the public sphere (re)produce potentially harmful assumptions. In this paper, we examine mainstream media construction of the "caregiver" identity in advocacy-related coverage over a 6-year time period (2016-2021). Relying on abductive formal analysis, we explore how care for older adults is presented as largely burdensome and linked to what are labeled the "complex care needs" of a growing aging population that is erroneously presented as largely incapa

Future orientation among young adult Arabs in Israel following the October 7 events.

In this exploratory study, we examined the future orientation of young adult Arabs in Israel, considering their sociocultural context and the ongoing sociopolitical tensions exacerbated by the October 7 events. Future orientation, defined as individuals' perceptions, aspirations, and plans for their future, plays a critical role in personal development and goal achievement. However, little research has focused on how discrimination, ethnonational identity, and political conflict shape future orientation among young adult Arabs in Israel. Through in-depth interviews with 34 participants aged 18

Ethnic-racial identity modulates emotion dysregulation and alcohol use among an adult sample of Asian Americans.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the moderating role of racial-ethnic identity in the relation between emotion dysregulation and alcohol use and related harms among Asian Americans. METHOD: An adult sample of Asian Americans (N = 105, 67.6% women) participated in a study examining emotional experiences across different racial and ethnic groups that assessed emotion dysregulation (Difficulties With Emotion Regulation; Difficulties With Emotion Regulation-Positive), alcohol use and related harms (Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test), and ethnic-racial identity (Et

Football belongs to the people: A social identity perspective on attitudes toward the European Super League in the English Premier League.

The announcement of the European Super League (ESL) led to massive protests in England. While the ESL is officially being reshaped and may resurface, there is a dearth of empirical studies on the motives associated with attitudes toward the ESL. In this research, we explored attitudes toward the ESL among Premier League fans by conducting an online survey 36 h after the ESL announcement (N = 1,346 fans of Premier League clubs, among which 832 fans of the Big Six clubs involved in the ESL). Fans of the Big Six held more positive attitudes toward the ESL compared to fans of the Other 14 Premier

Cultural identity in Siberia and in analytical practice.

This paper discusses the main features of Siberian identity formed throughout the historical development of Siberia under the influence of social, economic, geographical, climatic, and other factors. Siberian cultural identity is closely connected with the mythology and ancient religion of the indigenous peoples of Siberia - shamanism, whose rituals, images, symbols, and motifs are often manifested in the clients' dreams. Following an in-depth study of Siberian history and culture, I formulate a complex of homelessness rooted in a deep collective trauma that left its imprint on people's psyche

The Indirect Effect of Ethnic Identity on Marijuana Use Through School Engagement: An African American High School Sample.

BACKGROUND: African American marijuana use is associated with many negative social, emotional, and health-related consequences. Of significance, over recent years this population has shown an increase in use. In the literature, ethnic identity and school engagement are prominent protective factors against substance use. OBJECTIVE: This study will examine how these protective factors are related, specifically whether ethnic identity mitigates risk through school engagement to reduce marijuana use. METHOD: A path analysis was conducted with 437 African American high school students (41% male)
