Simulation of the power transmission of bone-conducted sound in a finite-element model of the human head.

Bone conduction (BC) sound is the perception of sound transmitted in the skull bones and surrounding tissues. To better understand BC sound perception and the interaction with surrounding tissues, the power transmission of BC sound is investigated in a three-dimensional finite-element model of a whole human head. BC sound transmission was simulated in the FE model and the power dissipation as well as the power flow following a mechanical vibration at the mastoid process behind the ear was analyzed. The results of the simulations show that the skull bone (comprises the cortical bone and diploë)

The effects of perceived motion on sound-source lateralization.

Lateralization of dichotic click pairs differing in time of onset was studied under conditions of angular acceleration, optokinetic stimulation, and gaze fixation. Data obtained from 20 subjects with normal hearing indicate poorer left-right judgment performance for small time differences, as well as shifts in subjective simultaneity, for all experimental conditions relative to control conditions. In addition, response times increased for the experimental conditions. The results suggest that real or apparent motion may affect an individual's ability to process one of the major cues for sound-s

Peripheral sounds rapidly activate visual cortex: evidence from electrocorticography.

Neurophysiological studies with animals suggest that sounds modulate activity in primary visual cortex in the presence of concurrent visual stimulation. Noninvasive neuroimaging studies in humans have similarly shown that sounds modulate activity in visual areas even in the absence of visual stimuli or visual task demands. However, the spatial and temporal limitations of these noninvasive methods prevent the determination of how rapidly sounds activate early visual cortex and what information about the sounds is relayed there. Using spatially and temporally precise measures of local synaptic a

Analysis of knee joint sound signals for non-invasive diagnosis of cartilage pathology.

The need for a safe, objective, noninvasive tool for the early detection, localization, and quantification of both hyaline articular cartilage and meniscal pathology in the knee is discussed, and the possible use of joint sounds for this purpose is examined. A historical survey of joint sound analysis is given, and the authors' own research is described. The analysis of the knee joint sounds, using time-domain signal plots and three-dimensional spectral plots, supported the authors' assumptions regarding the nature of various degrees of chondromalacia and meniscal lesions, and the associated s

Bone-anchored hearing system, contralateral routing of signals hearing aid or cochlear implant: what is best in single-sided deafness?

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to compare long-term results after 1 year in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) who were fitted with different hearing aids. The participants tested contralateral routing of signals (CROS) hearing aids and bone-anchored hearing systems (BAHS). They were also informed about the possibility of a cochlear implant (CI) and chose one of the three devices. We also investigated which factors influenced the choice of device. METHODS: Prospective study with 89 SSD participants who were divided into three groups by choosing BAHS, CROS, or CI. All participants re

Detection and boundary identification of phonocardiogram sounds using an expert frequency-energy based metric.

This paper presents a new method to detect and to delineate phonocardiogram (PCG) sounds. Toward this objective, after preprocessing the PCG signal, two windows were moved on the preprocessed signal, and in each analysis window, two frequency-and amplitude-based features were calculated from the excerpted segment. Then, a synthetic decision making basis was devised by combining these two features for being used as an efficient detection-delineation decision statistic, (DS). Next, local extremums and locations of minimum slopes of the DS were determined by conducting forward-backward local inve

Phase-aberration-corrected coherence factor beamforming for photoacoustic computed tomography.

SIGNIFICANCE: Coherence factor (CF) beamforming can suppress sidelobes in photoacoustic computed tomography, but phase aberration can make genuine absorbers appear incoherent and cause conventional CF to downweight real signals. AIM: We aim to reduce photoacoustic volume tomography phase-aberration-induced loss of true signals in conventional coherence-factor reconstruction and validate the method using phantom and in vivo experiments. APPROACH: PAC-CF extends an ellipsoidal two-region time-of-flight correction to the angle-weighted channel contributions used for both coherent backprojection

The Effects of Middle-ear Stiffness on the Auditory Brainstem Neural Encoding of Phase.

The middle-ear system relies on a balance of mass and stiffness characteristics for transmitting sound from the external environment to the cochlea and auditory neural pathway. Phase is one aspect of sound that, when transmitted and encoded by both ears, contributes to binaural cue sensitivity and spatial hearing. The study aims were (i) to investigate the effects of middle-ear stiffness on the auditory brainstem neural encoding of phase in human adults with normal pure-tone thresholds and (ii) to investigate the relationships between middle-ear stiffness-induced changes in wideband acoustic i

How reliable is the "scratch test" versus the Weber test after tympanomastoid surgery?

OBJECTIVES: To identify whether the scratch test can be used as an alternative to the Weber's test after tympanomastoid surgery. METHODS: This twin-center prospective study assessed major tympanomastoid surgery patients over a 6-month period. Patients were assessed postoperatively on Day 0 or Day 1 of surgery using a standardized proforma. A Weber's test was performed using a 512-Hz tuning fork, placed midline on the forehead to assess the direction of sound localization. This was directly compared with a scratch test, by asking the patient the following while scratching the head bandage in t

Sound Flexibly Interacts With Dual-Format Templates to Optimize Visual Search.

Previous studies indicate that the dual formats of templates recursively operate in tandem during visual search tasks. The guiding template with coarse features supports target localization, whereas the target template with precise features supports target identification. However, whether a sound that provides target-consistent identity information would flexibly interact with these two templates to optimize search behavior remains unclear. Across two experiments, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants searched for and identified a visual target letter ("V" or "K"). I

Multisensory vestibular, vestibular-auditory, and auditory network effects revealed by parametric sound pressure stimulation.

Multisensory convergence and sensorimotor integration are important aspects for the mediation of higher vestibular cognitive functions at the cortical level. In contrast to the integration of vestibulo-visual or vestibulo-tactile perception, much less is known about the neural mechanism that mediates the integration of vestibular-otolith (linear acceleration/translation/gravity detection) and auditory processing. Vestibular-otolith and auditory afferents can be simultaneously activated using loud sound pressure stimulation, which is routinely used for testing cervical and ocular vestibular evo

Binaural hearing aid intervention for a patient with nonserviceable hearing loss after surgery for vestibular schwannoma: A case report.

A vestibular schwannoma is a benign tumor; however, the schwannoma itself and interventions can cause sensorineural hearing loss. Most vestibular schwannomas are unilateral tumors that affect hearing only on one side. Attention has focused on improving the quality of life for patients with unilateral hearing loss and therapeutic interventions to address this issue have been emphasized. Herein, we encountered a patient who was a candidate for hearing preservation surgery based on preoperative findings and had nonserviceable hearing after the surgery, according to the Gardner-Robertson classific

Assessment of time-frequency representation techniques for thoracic sounds analysis.

A step forward in the knowledge about the underlying physiological phenomena of thoracic sounds requires a reliable estimate of their time-frequency behavior that overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional spectrogram. A more detailed time-frequency representation could lead to a better feature extraction for diseases classification and stratification purposes, among others. In this respect, the aim of this study was to look for an omnibus technique to obtain the time-frequency representation (TFR) of thoracic sounds by comparing generic goodness-of-fit criteria in different simulated tho

Wavelet-based segmentation and feature extraction of heart sounds for intelligent PDA-based phonocardiography.

OBJECTIVES: Many pathological conditions of the cardiovascular system cause murmurs and aberrations in heart sounds. Phonocardiography provides the clinician with a complementary tool to record the heart sounds heard during auscultation. The advancement of intracardiac phonocardiography combined with modern digital signal processing techniques has strongly renewed researchers' interest in studying heart sounds and murmurs. The aim of this work is to investigate the applicability of different spectral analysis methods to heart sound signals and explore their suitability for PDA-based implementa

Unilateral Hearing Loss: Understanding Speech Recognition and Localization Variability-Implications for Cochlear Implant Candidacy.

OBJECTIVES: At a minimum, unilateral hearing loss (UHL) impairs sound localization ability and understanding speech in noisy environments, particularly if the loss is severe to profound. Accompanying the numerous negative consequences of UHL is considerable unexplained individual variability in the magnitude of its effects. Identification of covariables that affect outcome and contribute to variability in UHLs could augment counseling, treatment options, and rehabilitation. Cochlear implantation as a treatment for UHL is on the rise yet little is known about factors that could impact performan

Acoustic cues of keyboard mechanics enable auditory localization of upright piano tones.

Piano tone localization at the performer's listening point is a multisensory process involving audition, vision, and upper limb proprioception. The consequent representation of the auditory scene, especially in experienced pianists, is likely also influenced by their memory about the instrument keyboard. Disambiguating such components is not obvious, and first requires an analysis of the acoustic tone localization process to assess the role of auditory feedback in forming this scene. This analysis is complicated by the acoustic behavior of the piano, which does not guarantee the activation of

Training-induced plasticity of auditory localization in adult mammals.

Accurate auditory localization relies on neural computations based on spatial cues present in the sound waves at each ear. The values of these cues depend on the size, shape, and separation of the two ears and can therefore vary from one individual to another. As with other perceptual skills, the neural circuits involved in spatial hearing are shaped by experience during development and retain some capacity for plasticity in later life. However, the factors that enable and promote plasticity of auditory localization in the adult brain are unknown. Here we show that mature ferrets can rapidly r

Left frontal eye field encodes sound locations during passive listening.

Previous studies reported that auditory cortices (AC) were mostly activated by sounds coming from the contralateral hemifield. As a result, sound locations could be encoded by integrating opposite activations from both sides of AC ("opponent hemifield coding"). However, human auditory "where" pathway also includes a series of parietal and prefrontal regions. It was unknown how sound locations were represented in those high-level regions during passive listening. Here, we investigated the neural representation of sound locations in high-level regions by voxel-level tuning analysis, regions-of-i
