Dynamic accuracy measurement method for star trackers using a time-synchronized high-accuracy turntable.

Star trackers are typically used in a spacecraft to provide absolute attitude information to the on-board attitude control system so as to promote high accuracy. The performance of the star tracker is rather important. Attitude incorrectness provided by star trackers may lead to bad navigation with big deviations, even failure of satellites. Therefore, how to realize and verify the accuracy is crucial. As a matter of fact, it is difficult to validate accuracy of star trackers on the ground, especially for star trackers under highly dynamic conditions. In this paper, an accuracy measurement met

An Effective Sensor Architecture for Full-Attitude Determination in the HERMES Nano-Satellites.

The High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) is a constellation of 3U nano-satellites for high energy astrophysics. The HERMES nano-satellites' components have been designed, verified, and tested to detect and localize energetic astrophysical transients, such as short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events, thanks to novel miniaturized detectors sensitive to X-rays and gamma-rays. The space segment is composed of a constellation of CubeSats in low-Earth orbit (LEO), ensuring an accurate transient localization in a field

Accelerator-Based Tests of Shielding Effectiveness of Different Materials and Multilayers using High-Energy Light and Heavy Ions.

The roadmap for space exploration foresees longer journeys and further excursions outside low-Earth orbit as well as the establishment of permanent outposts on other celestial bodies, such as the Moon or Mars. The design of spacecrafts and habitats depends heavily on the mission scenario and must consider the radiation protection properties of the structural components as well as dedicated shielding. In fact, short- and long-term effects caused by exposure to cosmic radiation are now considered among the main health risks of space travel. One of the current strategies is to find multifunctiona

Meteorological and urban landscape factors on severe air pollution in Beijing.

UNLABELLED: Air pollution gained special attention with the rapid development in Beijing. In January 2013, Beijing experienced extreme air pollution, which was not well examined. We thus examine the magnitude of air quality in the particular month by applying the air quality index (AQI), which is based on the newly upgraded Chinese environmental standard. Our finding revealed that (1) air quality has distinct spatial heterogeneity and relatively better air quality was observed in the northwest while worse quality happened in the southeast part of the city; (2) the wind speed is the main determ

Phase-Separation-Engineered Porous Polyimide Fibers via Wet Spinning for Superior Thermal Insulation.

Personal thermal management (PTM) textiles can reduce building energy consumption and improve personal comfort, yet their practical application is constrained by the inherent trade-off between flexibility, thermal insulation, and mechanical strength. Herein, porous single-component polyimide (PI) fibers were fabricated via coagulation bath-modulated wet spinning of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA)-4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) poly(amic acid) (PAA). By tuning the EtOH/H2O ratio (20/80-60/40) and winding speed (2.6-13.1 mm/s), the fiber cross-sectional morphology evolves from

Bacterial Growth in Brines Formed by the Deliquescence of Salts Relevant to Cold Arid Worlds.

Hygroscopic salts at Mars' near-surface (MgSO4, (per)chlorates, NaCl) may form brines by absorbing moisture from the atmosphere at certain times through the process of deliquescence. We have previously shown strong bacterial growth in saturated MgSO4 (∼67% w/v as epsomite) at room temperature, and growth was observed at the MgSO4 eutectic point (43% w/v at -4°C). Here, we have investigated the growth of salinotolerant microbes (Halomonas, Marinococcus, Planococcus) from Hot Lake, Washington; Basque Lake, British Columbia; and Great Salt Plains, Oklahoma under deliquescing conditions. Learning to live on a Mars day: fatigue countermeasures during the Phoenix Mars Lander mission.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To interact with the robotic Phoenix Mars Lander (PML) spacecraft, mission personnel were required to work on a Mars day (24.65 h) for 78 days. This alien schedule presents a challenge to Earth-bound circadian physiology and a potential risk to workplace performance and safety. We evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of a fatigue management program to facilitate synchronization with the Mars day and alleviate circadian misalignment, sleep loss, and fatigue. DESIGN: Operational field study. SETTING: PML Science Operations Center. PARTICIPANTS: Scienti

Toxicokinetics of inhaled bromotrifluoromethane (Halon 1301) in human subjects.

Bromotrifluoromethane (CBrF3), commonly known as Halon 1301, is used as a fire extinguishant in the Space Shuttle. Several scenarios, such as a fire or a faulty alarm, could lead to its discharge resulting in a Halon 1301 concentration of up to 1% in the spacecraft cabin atmosphere. To examine the effects of Halon 1301 on mental performance and physiologic function, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sponsored a human inhalation study. Four pairs of adult male subjects were each exposed in a double-blind fashion for 24 hr to 1% (10,000 ppm or 60,875 mg/m3) Halon 1301 and to air

Visual blur and motion sickness in an optokinetic drum.

BACKGROUND: The most commonly cited hypotheses for motion sickness (MS) focus on inconsistent sensory inputs. Visual/vestibular conflicts may lead to MS, but visual input from retinal regions/neural pathways that are sensitive to motion might bear more weight in MS etiology. We hypothesized that inducing blurred vision in an optokinetic drum would attenuate the influence of foveal (parvocellular) input, but not peripheral (magnocellular) input that is sensitive to motion. Increased relative influence of peripheral visual input was predicted to subsequently lead to more visual/vestibular confli

Satellite vegetation index data as a tool to forecast population dynamics of medically important mosquitoes at military installations in the continental United States.

The United States faces many existing and emerging mosquito-borne disease threats, such as West Nile virus and Rift Valley fever. An important component of strategic prevention and control plans for these and other mosquito-borne diseases is forecasting the distribution, timing, and abundance of mosquito vector populations. Populations of many medically important mosquito species are closely tied to climate, and historical climate-population associations may be used to predict future population dynamics. Using 2003-2005 U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine mosquito sur

Calculation of quality factors for space radiation at low Earth orbit: Monte Carlo-based microdosimetric approach.

This study aims to calculate quality factors (Q) for the radiation environment at low Earth orbit using Monte Carlo-based microdosimetric techniques. This study considers Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) ions (Z= 1-28), trapped protons, and albedo neutrons.Qis calculated with (2.8 g cm-2polyethylene and 10 g cm-2thick aluminum) and without shielding. FLUKA code is used to model a uniform radiation environment incident on a spherical spacecraft having the above shielding material while a spherical tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) is positioned at the center of this spherical envelope. Ocular toxicity of authentic lunar dust.

BACKGROUND: Dust exposure is a well-known occupational hazard for terrestrial workers and astronauts alike and will continue to be a concern as humankind pursues exploration and habitation of objects beyond Earth. Humankind's limited exploration experience with the Apollo Program indicates that exposure to dust will be unavoidable. Therefore, NASA must assess potential toxicity and recommend appropriate mitigation measures to ensure that explorers are adequately protected. Visual acuity is critical during exploration activities and operations aboard spacecraft. Therefore, the present research

Pharmacology in space: pharmacotherapy.

This chapter summarized the information available on the pharmacological kits onboard spacecraft and on the use of drugs in space, while the next chapter is dedicated to the impacts of weightlessness on drug pharmacokinetics. The need of a selected group of drugs for the use of astronauts during short-term and long-term spaceflights has been discussed. Recommendations are made for a Space Pharmacopoeia as well as for the areas of research needed to adapt medication to the weightlessness of the space environment. Although the usefulness of these drugs has been clearly demonstrated, their use al

Changes in the vestibular function during space flight.

An analysis of observations and investigations carried out in space flight has shown that some cosmonauts and astronauts have experienced vestibular disorders during the transition to weightlessness. Vestibular-sensory disorders include: Spatial illusions (the feelings of falling down, being in an upside-down position, the sensations of rotation of the craft or the body) and vertigo occurring during the onset of the orbital flight and head movements; Feelings, similar to those experienced in response to Coriolis accelerations on the Earth, which occasionally develop in weightlessness during th

Highly porous nature of a primitive asteroid revealed by thermal imaging.

Carbonaceous (C-type) asteroids1 are relics of the early Solar System that have preserved primitive materials since their formation approximately 4.6 billion years ago. They are probably analogues of carbonaceous chondrites2,3 and are essential for understanding planetary formation processes. However, their physical properties remain poorly known because carbonaceous chondrite meteoroids tend not to survive entry to Earth's atmosphere. Here we report on global one-rotation thermographic images of the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu, taken by the thermal infrared imager (TIR)4 onboard the spacecra

Layperson Physiological Tolerance and Operational Performance in Centrifuge-Simulated Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: Prior study has indicated that individuals of varied age, medical history, and limited-to-no experience tolerate spaceflight conditions. We sought to expand upon the understanding of layperson response to hypergravity conditions expected in commercial spaceflight by exposing subjects, following minimal training, to centrifuge-simulated, high-fidelity commercial spaceflight profiles. We further explored how these individuals perform in simulated operational activities during and following hypergravity.METHODS: Volunteer subjects participated in up to five centrifuge runs (maximum

Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO).

TEMPO was selected in 2012 by NASA as the first Earth Venture Instrument, for launch between 2018 and 2021. It will measure atmospheric pollution for greater North America from space using ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy. TEMPO observes from Mexico City, Cuba, and the Bahamas to the Canadian oil sands, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific, hourly and at high spatial resolution (~2.1 km N/S×4.4 km E/W at 36.5°N, 100°W). TEMPO provides a tropospheric measurement suite that includes the key elements of tropospheric air pollution chemistry, as well as contributing to carbon cycle knowledge. M
