A rational approach to luminescence turn-on sensing of cyanide by a dicyanovinyl-substituted acetylide Pt(II) complex, which primarily relies on the nucleophilic addition reaction of cyanide anions to the α-position of the dicyanovinyl group, is described. The CpFe(indenyl)-functionalized borane {η(5)-(4-dimesitylboryl)indenyl}(η(5)-cyclopentadienyl)iron is available in two simple steps from organic precursors (in ca. 50% yield) and binds cyanide in protic media (1:1 thf-H2O) with an accompanying green to red/pink colour change. Extremely high selectivity over fluoride and hydroxide and a detection limit of ca. 10 ppm represent a highly desirable combination among borane derived cyanide receptors.

This paper discussed the quantitative influence of Cu(II) on the interaction between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and sulfite (SO3(2-)), which is a derivate of sulfite dioxide in human bodies, by using fluorescence spectrum and ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrometry in vitro. In this paper we present the first study of the VUV photoabsorption spectrum of condensed phase SO(2) recorded over the VUV region 120 to 320 nm (10.33 to 3.64 eV). Distinct spectral features were observed that can be used to distinguish between the formation of amorphous and crystalline ice structures. These signatures may then be used to probe the formation of different ice structures as a function of both deposition rate and substrate temperature.

The photophysics of 3-benzoxazol-2-yl-chromen-2-one was studied in different solvents. High molar absorptivities, between 14,800 and 22,900 dm3/mol cm, were observed for the absorption peak related to the S0 --> S1 transition which suggests a pi --> pi* character. This compound presents a limited solvatochromism, attributed to the benzoxazole group, and high fluorescence quantum yields, phi(f). A conformational study on Barbituric (BA) and Thiobarbituric (TBA) acids was performed at ab initio MP2/6-31G** level on the neutral, protonated, mono- and di-anionic forms. Acid-base equilibria were studied by comparing the electronic transitions evaluated for the most stable conformations and the experimental spectra at different pH values.
