Rapid and non-invasive detection of malaria parasites using near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Novel and highly sensitive point-of-care malaria diagnostic and surveillance tools that are rapid and affordable are urgently needed to support malaria control and elimination. METHODS: We demonstrated the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technique to detect malaria parasites both, in vitro, using dilutions of infected red blood cells obtained from Plasmodium falciparum cultures and in vivo, in mice infected with P. berghei using blood spotted on slides and non-invasively, by simply scanning various body areas (e.g., feet, groin and ears). The spectra were analysed u

Near infrared spectroscopy detection of hemispheric cerebral ischemia following middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats.

Timely and sensitive in vivo estimation of ischemic stroke-induced brain infarction are necessary to guide diagnosis and evaluation of treatments' efficacy. The gold standard for estimation of the cerebral infarction volume is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is expensive and not readily accessible. Measuring regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is the status quo for confirming reduced blood flow in experimental ischemic stroke models. However, rCBF reduction following cerebral artery occlusion often does not correlate with subsequent infarct volume. In

Relationship Between Brain Tissue Oxygen and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Patients with Nontraumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Continuous monitoring of cerebral oxygenation is one of the diagnostic tools used in patients with brain injury. Direct and invasive measurement of cerebral oxygenation with a partial brain oxygen pressure (PbtO2) probe is promising but invasive. Noninvasive assessment of regional transcranial oxygen saturation using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) may be feasible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the interchangeability between PbtO2 and NIRS over time in patients with nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. METHODS: This retrospective study was performed in a neurocritical c

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Intravascular-Ultrasound-Guided Intervention in Minimal Coronary Artery Stenosis: A Case Report.

Near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasounds (NIRS-IVUSs) can identify high-risk plaque morphologies associated with future event risk. However, the usage of NIRS-IVUSs is not universal. We report a case with insignificant coronary angiography (CAG) and high-risk NIRS-IVUS findings. A 58-year-old man with exertional dyspnea was admitted for a CAG evaluation. The CAG of the patient demonstrated mild angiographic stenosis in the mid-left anterior descending artery. However, NIRS-IVUS revealed a high maximum lipid core burden index at 4 mm (MaxLCBI4mm) and an intraluminal calcific protrus

Near-infrared spectroscopy device selection affects intervention management for cerebral desaturation during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Currently, several near-infrared spectroscopy oximetry devices are used for detecting cerebral ischemia during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery. We investigated whether two different models of near-infrared spectroscopy oximetry devices affect the assessment of cerebral ischemia and its management during CPB. METHODS: From January 2017 to August 2017, 70 adult cardiovascular surgery cases were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 different near-infrared spectroscopy oximetry devices. The devices were INVOS 5100C (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) (group I; n = 35) and FORE-SIGHT ELITE (C

Cerebral haemodynamics during simulated driving: Changes in workload are detectable with functional near infrared spectroscopy.

Motor vehicle operation is a complicated task and substantial cognitive resources are required for safe driving. Experimental paradigms examining cognitive workload using driving simulators often introduce secondary tasks, such as mathematical exercises, or utilise simulated in-vehicle information systems. The effects of manipulating the demands of the primary driving task have not been examined in detail using advanced neuroimaging techniques. This study used a manipulation of the simulated driving environment to test the impact of increased driving complexity on brain activity. Fifteen parti

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy brain imaging predicts symptom severity in youth exposed to traumatic stress.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique with the potential to enable the assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) brain biomarkers in an affordable and portable manner. Consistent with biological models of PTSD, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and fNIRS studies of adults with trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms suggest increased activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and ventrolateral PFC (vlPFC) in response to negative emotion stimuli. We tested this theory with fNIRS assessment among youth exposed to trauma

Shedding light on the frontal hemodynamics of spatial working memory using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex has been shown to be a key functional network within the middle frontal gyrus in regards to working memory processing. A commonly used paradigm in this line of research is the n-back task. The standard variant of the task requires participants to state whether the current item has been presented n trials prior (or not). Two possible strategies could be used to complete the task. Participants may either actively uphold the last n items in working memory or they may use item familiarity as basis for a decision. Previous functional near infrared spectroscopy stu

Regional heterogeneity of cerebral hemodynamics in mild neonatal encephalopathy measured with multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Neuromonitoring at the bedside is the key to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of brain injury associated with neonatal encephalopathy. The current practice is to monitor the forehead using a noninvasive cerebral oximetry-it remains unknown to what extent cerebral hemodynamics in other brain regions is different to the frontal region. METHOD: A multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system was used to monitor neonates (n = 14) with fetal acidosis and mild neonatal encephalopathy at four brain regions (the frontal, posterior, left temporal, and right temporal lob

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Measured Cerebral Blood Flow from Spontaneous Oxygenation Changes in Neonatal Brain Injury.

Neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic (HI) brain injury were monitored using a broadband near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system in the neonatal intensive care unit. The aim of this work is to use the NIRS cerebral oxygenation data (HbD = oxygenated-haemoglobin - deoxygenated-haemoglobin) combined with arterial saturation (SaO2) from pulse oximetry to calculate cerebral blood flow (CBF) based on the oxygen swing method, during spontaneous desaturation episodes. The method is based on Fick's principle and uses HbD as a tracer; when a sudden change in SaO2 occurs, the change in HbD represents a chang

Tourniquet-induced tissue hypoxia characterized by near-infrared spectroscopy during ankle surgery: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatic tourniquet inflation during extremity surgery leads to profound and prolonged tissue ischemia. Its effect on tissue oxygenation is inadequately studied. METHODS: Patients undergoing elective ankle surgery with tourniquet application participated in this observational cohort study. Somatic and cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SstO2 and SctO2) were monitored using tissue near-infrared spectroscopy. Oxygenation was monitored distally (SstO2-distal) and proximally to the tourniquet, on the contralateral leg, and the forehead (a total of 4 tissue beds). Tissue oxygenation a

Dynamic changes in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) findings in first-episode schizophrenia: a case report.

The clinical course of schizophrenia is characterized by recurrence and chronicity and has a large burden on society. Nevertheless, diagnosis of schizophrenia is based only on distinctive symptoms and the disease course. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a useful method for measuring changes in the hemoglobin concentration in the cortical surface area and reflects brain function. We measured NIRS four times during the clinical course in a patient with first-episode schizophrenia.A 17-year-old woman admitted to our hospital because of hallucinations, delusions and appetite loss. After treatm

Indocyanine green kinetics with near-infrared spectroscopy predicts cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome after carotid artery stenting.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (HPS) is a potentially life-threatening complication following carotid artery stenting (CAS) and carotid endoarterectomy (CEA). Early prediction and treatment of patients at risk for HPS are required in patients undergoing CAS because HPS occurs significantly earlier after CAS than CEA. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is often used for monitoring, and indocyanine green (ICG) kinetics by NIRS (ICG-NIRS) can detect reductions in cerebral perfusion in patients with acute stroke. However, whether ICG-NIRS can predict postoperative hyperperfusion pheno
