BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and spinal canal stenosis can be frequently observed in the medical history of patients with transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR), both in the hereditary (mt-ATTR) and wild-type (wt-ATTR) form. The aim of this retrospective single-center analysis was to determine the prevalence of these findings, delay to diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis and the prognostic value in a large cohort of patients with wt-ATTR and mt-ATTR amyloidosis.
METHODS: Medical records of 253 patients diagnosed with wt-ATTR, 136 patients with mt-ATTR and 77 asymptomatic gene carriers wer

OBJECTIVE: Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) and knee osteoarthritis (KOA), both of which are age-related degenerative diseases, are independently correlated with increased pain and dysfunction of the lower extremities. However, there have been few studies that investigated whether LSS patients with KOA exhibit poor clinical recovery following lumbar spinal surgery. The aim of this study was to elucidate the surgical outcomes of lumbar spinal surgery for LSS patients with KOA using multiple health-related quality of life (HRQOL) parameters.
METHODS: A total of 865 consecutive patients who un

BACKGROUND: The important pathophysiologic factor of neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) in lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) has been reported to be the reduction in intraneural blood flow and a state of relative ischemia in nerve tissues. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) presumably improves symptoms in patients with LSCS by improving the blood flow in the cauda equina and nerve roots through its vasodilation and antiplatelet aggregation effects. The purpose of the study was to summarize the results of previous studies regarding PGE1 treatment for LSCS and to describe the details of PGE1 trea

STUDY DESIGN: Computed tomography-based anatomical study.
OBJECTIVE: To study the secular changes in lumbar spinal canal dimensions.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Development of symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis, among other factors, is related to the dimensions of the bony canal. The canal reaches its adult size early on in life. Several factors, including protein intake, may influence its final dimensions. As with increases in human stature from improvements of socioeconomic conditions, we hypothesized that adult bony canal size has also grown larger in recent generations.
METHODS: This st

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis is a major cause of impaired quality of life and diminished functional capacity in the elderly. Degenerative spondylolisthesis often involves only one or two level and tend to present with one or two level spinal canal stenosis.
CASE REPORT: The authors describe an unusual case of degenerative spondylolisthesis involving 3 levels of the lumbar spine from L2 to L5. The patient was a 58-year-old woman who suffered chronic back pain and neurogenic claudication. Plain radiography revealed grade I degenerative spondylolisthesis at L2-L3, L3-L4 an

BACKGROUND: Publications concerning the shape of the spinal canal and degenerative changes in the intervertebral joints have not described this issue in full detail to date, especially with regard to the causes of pain syndromes associated with degenerative changes in intervertebral joints. The aim of the study was to assess the shape of the spinal canal and joint surface angles at L3, L4 and L5.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 176 patients with clinical and radiological evidence of spinal canal stenosis confirmed by computed tomography.
RESULTS: Morphometric measurements were condu

Even today, injuries of the spinal column still pose a large challenge for the treating trauma surgeons. In the last century due to more differentiated diagnostics, the concept of predominantly conservative treatment changed to interventional procedures especially in the so-called unstable injuries. Discrepancies still exist in the evaluation of stability. In the last few years, dorsal, ventral, or combined interventional procedures have become established. The narrow spinal canal and neurological deficits represent important factors. Based on the literature, the different procedures and evalu

A young man was found to have multiple synostosis syndrome type I after presenting with a neck injury causing a cervical spinal cord contusion. Neurological symptoms and signs suggested spinal cord compression. Magnetic resonance (MR) and computerized tomography (CT) imaging of the spine showed spinal canal stenosis with cord compression at C3-C6, a deformed spinal canal flattened in the anteroposterior dimension, vertebral fusions and deformed lateral processes of the vertebrae. He had a long broad nose with hypoplasia of the alae nasi, conductive hearing loss requiring hearing aids, muscular

A 30-year-old male presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage, due to a rare peripheral posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysm located in the spinal canal. Angiography and magnetic resonance imaging disclosed the aneurysm of 15 mm diameter at the C-1 level. After aneurysmal neck clipping and ventriculoperitoneal shunt implacement, he was discharged without neurological deficit. Histological examination revealed no layer formation, only hemorrhage and organization in the aneurysmal wall. This case may be an example of giant aneurysm formation caused by repeated bleeding and organization.

The technique of obliquely drilling out the postero-lateral part of the cervical vertebral bodies is described. It uses the antero-lateral (retro carotico-jugular) approach to control and displace the vertebral artery postero-laterally and to expose the lateral aspect of the vertebral bodies. It provides, through a wide field and with minimal retraction of the carotid artery and the internal jugular vein, an extensive view of the anterior aspect of the spinal cord. It has already been used to treat 15 anterior lesions compressing the spinal cord including neurinomas and osteophytes.

Clinical, radiological, surgical and experimental observations make it possible to construct a rational theory of the segmental lumbar instability which explains the pathogenesis of spondylosis, of stenosis and of several cases of disc displacement as well. This theory helps us to choose the right surgical procedure. Spinal stenosis, degenerative spondylolisthesis and some cases of disc displacement are seen as part of a degenerative process with its starting point in regressive changes of the intervertebral disc and lateral joint. This leads to a marked instability of the affected mobile segm

A case of craniopharyngioma with a large cyst extending through the posterior fossa down into the upper cervical spinal canal was reported. The patient is a 14-year-old female who was operated on for the first time in 1970, because of a suprasellar calcified mass. Histological examination verified craniopharyngioma of adamantinomatous type. Since then, she had been operated three times because of deterioration of visual acuity. She was admitted for the fifth time in January, 1977, complaining of severe neck pain radiating bilaterally to the shoulders. Radiological examination demonstrated, bes

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study at a single academic institution.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify imaging risk factors for stenosis in extended neck positions undetectable in preoperative neutral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and improving decompression strategies for cervical spine disorders.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Cervical disorders are influenced by various dynamic factors, with spinal stenosis appearing during neck extension. Despite the diagnostic value of dynamic cervical MRI, standard practice often uses neutral-position MRI, potentially influencing surgical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Dental focal infection-induced ventricular and spinal canal empyema is an extremely rare, severe, acute disease that is clinically associated with extremely high morbidity and mortality. Traditional cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bacterial culture is time-consuming, with a low positive rate, which frequently results in severe irreversible consequences. The next-generation sequencing technique is an emerging pathogenic microorganism detection method that can obtain results in a short time with high accuracy, thus providing great assistance in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of this

OBJECT: Analysis of cervical sagittal deformity in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) requires a thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation to select the most appropriate surgical approach. Angular radiographic measurements, which are commonly used to define sagittal deformity, may not be the most appropriate to use for surgical planning. The authors present a simple straight-line method to measure effective spinal canal lordosis and analyze its reliability. Furthermore, comparisons of this measurement to traditional angular measurements of sagittal cervical alignment are m

Despite the high prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV), little is known about the biomechanics of this condition. In addition, as previous studies have focused solely on symptomatic and elderly LSTV patients, the relationship between LSTV and congenital or developmental spinal stenosis remains uncertain. In the present study, the spinal canal diameters were measured in young subjects in whom degenerative changes have not yet become significant. Seventeen young adults with LSTV and 24 normal controls were included in this study. The spinal canal sagittal diameter, interpedicula

Changes in the canal diameter during physiological motions are important considerations in the treatment of patients who have a burst fracture with the presence of bony fragments, but without neurologic deficit. In this in vitro study, the changes in the soft-canal diameter of the thoracolumbar region, when intact and after different fractures, was investigated under several different loading conditions. The soft-canal diameter was clearly identified on the lateral radiographs by attaching a series of steel balls to the posterior longitudinal ligament and ligamentum flavum in the midsagittal p
