Splenic infarction following conventional open gastrectomy in patients with gastric malignancy: a CT-based study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this CT-based study was to investigate the frequency of splenic infarction (SI) following conventional open gastrectomy performed for gastric malignant neoplasms. METHODS: 20 patients who underwent subtotal or total gastrectomy, omentectomy, and D2 lymph node dissections preserving the spleen for gastric malignant neoplasms were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with postoperative CT scans within 3 months were enrolled in this study. CT imaging was performed with a 64-row multidetector CT scanner. Abdominal CT scan with precontrast and postcontrast portal phase images was

Imaging findings of extensive splenic infarction after cyanoacrylate injection for gastric varices--a case report.

Endoscopic injection of N-Butyl-2-cyanoacrylate is a widely accepted treatment for esophagogastric varices. This procedure is commonly associated with minor complications which include transient pyrexia and abdominal discomfort. Serious vascular complications secondary to systemic embolization of cyanoacrylate have rarely been reported. We describe the CT findings of extensive splenic infarction in a patient following cyanoacrylate injection for gastric varices.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection presenting with complete splenic infarction and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Animal bites are typically harmless, but in rare cases infections introduced by such bites can be fatal. Capnocytophaga canimorsus, found in the normal oral flora of dogs, has the potential to cause conditions ranging from minor cellulitis to fatal sepsis. The tendency of C. canimorsus infections to present with varied symptoms, the organism's fastidious nature, and difficulty of culturing make this a challenging diagnosis. Rarely, bacterial cytotoxins such as those produced by C. canimorsus may act as causative agents of TTP, further complicating the diagnosis. Early recognition i

Splenic infarction, warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia and antiphospholipid antibodies in a patient with infectious mononucleosis.

An 18-year-old woman with infectious mononucleosis developed splenic infarction and severe anemia. Evaluation of her anemia revealed a warm autoantibody and a persistently prolonged partial thromboplastin time that ultimately led to the identification of antiphospholipid antibodies. Although the warm autoantibody disappeared after 2 months, the antiphospholipid antibodies remained persistently positive. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature of this specific constellation of findings, with infectious mononucleosis, warm antibody hemolytic anemia, splenic infarction a

Computed tomographic diagnosis of superior mesenteric artery embolic thrombosis associated with renal and splenic infarction.

We describe a case of apparent embolic thrombosis of the superior mesenteric artery that on computed tomography (CT) was noted unexpectedly, making the diagnosis of ischemic bowel disease straightforward. It occurred together with the typical CT findings of renal and splenic infarction. This diagnosis was verified by angiography that provided more information and was confirmed at surgery.

Laparoscopic management of splenic infarct in polysplenia with situs inversus - Case report and review literature.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital abnormality, characterised by mirror imaging of visceral organs. Polysplenia is a subset of this, where multiple splenules are present. Splenic infarcts, in such conditions, can cause diagnostic uncertainty and significant surgical challenge. We report a case of a 35-year-old male with SIT and polysplenia who presented with right upper abdominal pain, fever and vomiting. Imaging showed multiple splenules in the right hypochondrium, with a peripheral splenic infarction. Laparoscopic splenectomy was done with modified port placement to accommodat

Splenic Infarction as a Rare Complication of Acute Brucellosis: A Case Report and Brief Review of Literature.

Brucellosis, a zoonotic infection caused by Brucella species, typically manifests as a febrile illness with systemic involvement. Rare complications, such as splenic infarction, are less commonly encountered. We present a case of a 48-year-old female with prolonged fever and left hypochondrial pain. Diagnostic imaging and blood culture confirmed the diagnosis of brucellosis with splenic infarction. A tailored antibiotic regimen resulted in significant improvement. This case underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and management in endemic regions to prevent severe complications.

Splenic infarction in a 12-year-old female leading to the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune inflammatory disease with extremely variable presentations. While a facial rash is the most common finding, other symptoms can include arthralgias, fatigue, and cytopenias. Abdominal symptoms are much less common presentations of lupus. Antiphospholipid syndrome is a related autoimmune disorder causing vascular thrombosis. Children with lupus frequently have antiphospholipid antibodies. We present a rare case of a 12-year-old female with a splenic infarction leading to a new diagnosis of lupus with associated antiphospholipid syndrome.

Splenic Infarctions and Sepsis Secondary to Ceftriaxone-Associated Acute Pancreatitis: A Case of Interdisciplinary Collaboration.

The spleen plays a crucial role in filtering aging blood cells and defending against encapsulated microorganisms. While not essential for survival, splenic dysfunction can lead to severe complications, including organ failure, infection, and death. This case study examines a rare presentation of drug-induced splenic septic thrombophlebitis secondary to pancreatitis caused by an adverse reaction to ceftriaxone. While pancreatitis is a known, common cause of splenic infarction and sepsis, there have only been two reported cases of ceftriaxone-induced pancreatitis in the past decade. This case fo

Staphylococcus hominis Infective Endocarditis Presenting with Embolic Splenic and Renal Infarcts and Spinal Discitis.

Staphylococcus hominis (S. hominis) is a Gram-positive, coagulase-negative bacteria that occurs as a normal commensal organism on the skin and may rarely cause native valve endocarditis (NVE). We present a 62-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and hypertension presenting with fever and abdominal pain. CT (computerized tomography) of the abdomen revealed splenic and renal infarcts; further imaging with MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) revealed enhancements consistent with discitis in T5-6 and L1-2. Three sets of blood cultures were positive for S. hominis sens

COVID-19 as a trigger for splenic infarction in a patient with sickle cell trait: A case report.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is the carrier state for sickle cell disease (SCD) and is usually perceived as a mild condition; however, previous studies have shown that hypoxemia may trigger sickle-cell related complications in these patients, including splenic infarction. Hypoxemia is a common finding in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. We present the case of a 19-year-old male with a history of epilepsy who presented to the emergency room due to abdominal pain in the left flank that appeared after presenting generalized tonic-clonic seizures and fever. SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing in nasopharyngeal

The unexpected finding of a splenic infarction in a patient with infectious mononucleosis due to Epstein-Barr virus.

The authors present a case of a 24-year-old man with infectious mononucleosis (IM) due to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Among his symptoms, he reported abdominal pain in the upper left quadrant. An abdominal ultrasound and CT revealed an extensive splenic infarction. During the acute stage of this disease, the thrombophilic screening revealed reduced free protein S and elevated factor VIII, with normalisation on re-evaluation 6 weeks later. Splenic infarction is a very rare complication of IM due to EBV but should be considered in patients presenting abdominal pain. A hypercoagulability state shou

Renal and splenic micro-infarctions following bronchial artery embolization with tris-acryl microspheres.

A bronchial artery embolization (BAE) is an important therapeutic method used to control acute and chronic hemoptysis. We report a case of multiple micro-infarcts involving both the kidneys and spleen, following a BAE with 500-700 microm crossed-linked tris-acryl microspheres (Embospheres) in a patient with bronchial artery pulmonary vein shunts. The superior penetration characteristics of the microspheres may have resulted in the greater tendency to cross the bronchial artery pulmonary vein shunts, which subsequently caused the systemic infarcts in our patient. We propose the use of larger si

[Splenic infarcts in Goodpasture's syndrome: its significance for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment (author's transl)].

Necrotising splenic arteritis with numerous extensive anaemic splenic infarcts was found in four cases of Goodpasture's syndrome with the necrotising variant of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. The disease was rapidly fatal. Early scanning of splenic infarcts for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic purposes of the fulminating form of Goodpasture's syndrome is recommended.

A Rare Presentation of Babesia-Associated Splenic Infarction in an Immunocompetent Young Male With Mild Parasitemia.

Babesiosis is a vector-borne protozoal disease primarily transmitted by the Ixodes scapularis tick, though it can also be transmitted through blood transfusions from infected donors. The illness can be asymptomatic or present with mild flu-like symptoms. Still, in severe cases, it can lead to disseminated intravascular coagulation and severe hemolytic anemia, sometimes necessitating management in the intensive care unit. Traditionally, severe babesiosis has been linked to individuals over 50 years old, asplenia, and those who are immunocompromised. Notably, parasitemia levels greater than 10%
