Morphological aspects of the euphonic voice.

The high quality of a euphonic voice is the result of complex interactions between many organs and systems. Vibrating vocal folds play a crucial role in this process. Their physiological motion is conditioned by the presence of the layered structure of laryngeal mucosa. In this study, we assessed the degree of dysphonia according to the Union of European Phoniatrics (UEP) scale. Videoendoscopy (VLS) and videostroboscopic (VLSS) examination of the larynx was used to visualize the vibration of the vocal folds. Morphological assessment of the inter-membranous part of the vocal fold mucosa was car

Evaluation of voice acoustic parameters related to the vocal-loading test in professionally active teachers with dysphonia.

INTRODUCTION: Teachers are at risk of developing voice disorders. A clinical battery of vocal function tests should include non-invasive and accurate measurements. The quantitative methods (e.g., voice acoustic analysis) make it possible to objectively evaluate voice efficiency and outcomes of dysphonia treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify possible signs of vocal fatigue, acoustic waveform perturbations during sustained phonation were measured before and after the vocal-loading test in 51 professionally active female teachers with functional voice disorders, using IRIS software. [Stroboscopic assessment of chronic laryngitis].

INTRODUCTION: The laryngostroboscopy allows analysis of the vocal fold vibrations during phonation. Disruption of normal viscoelastic properties of the superficial lamina propria results in aberrant vocal fold vibration and mucosal wave propagation. Therefore, an investigation was performed to relate the stroboscopic results with the anatomopathologic results of chronic laryngitis and glottic cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study, which included 30 direct laryngoscopies with biopsy of 25 patients and their corresponding laryngostroboscopies. RESULTS: 60% of the cas

Complications of collagen injection of the vocal fold: report of several unusual cases and review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: Injection laryngoplasty is one of the most frequently performed procedures in patients with voice complaints. Various biomaterials have been used to medialize vocal folds or to treat symptoms of vocal fold scar. The ideal biomaterial would be easily injected through a fine-gauge needle, well tolerated, and long lasting. Injectable collagen preparations fulfill at least two of these criteria, and collagen has been used widely for vocal fold injections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a retrospective review of two unusual complications of collagen injection and a review of the rel

Submucosal Thyroarytenoid Myectomy with Arytenoidectomy in Treating Bilateral Vocal Fold Immobility.

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for bilateral vocal fold immobility (BVFI) aims to establish a patent airway while maintaining voice and swallow function, a unique dilemma. Current techniques display unfavorable healing vectors, and exposed endolaryngeal tissue results in substantial airway granulation requiring postoperative care. We present a novel technique to improve glottic airway patency by preserving laryngeal mucosal lining and harnessing lateral retraction of glottic tissue to reduce revisions for granulation tissue and laryngeal scar. METHODS: Case-series analysis was performed on eight BVFI pat

Arytenoid vertical height discrepancy in predicting outcomes after unilateral vocal cord medialization.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis is a structural abnormality that often occurs secondary to dysfunction of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and typically presents as a breathy voice. Medialization laryngoplasty is a constellation of procedures that improves apposition of the vocal cords. Many patients, however, fail to experience sufficient improvement in vocal quality postoperatively despite apparent glottic closure on stroboscopy. This suggests that asymmetry in other cord characteristics may also have acoustic consequences. Our hypothesis is that arytenoid height symmetry

Wildfire Smoke and the Human Larynx: Preliminary Evidence of Functional and Molecular Change.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Air pollution is a major public health burden. Wildfires are a known source of air pollution in their production of smoke, containing fine particulate matter (PM2.5). PM2.5 is known to induce respiratory inflammation, but its effects on the human larynx remain poorly understood. This case report provides a preliminary investigation into the impact of wildfire-related air pollution on vocal function and laryngeal tissue biology in an adult participant exposed to elevated PM2.5 during a wildfire event. METHODS: Comprehensive voice and laryngeal assessments were conducted

The effect of breathing exercises combined with manual therapy on muscle tension dysphonia in traditional singers: a blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is common in traditional singers and can lead to serious complications, but there is inconclusive evidence about how MTD should be treated in singers as professional voice users. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of breathing exercises combined with manual therapy versus breathing exercises and manual therapy on voice quality in traditional singers suffering from MTD. METHODS: In this blinded randomized clinical trial, 60 patients with MTD were randomly allocated to four groups: (1) breathing exercises, (2) manual therapy, (3) combi

Aerodynamically driven phonation of individual vocal folds under general anesthesia in canines.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We previously developed an instrument called the Aerodynamic Vocal Fold Driver (AVFD) for intraoperative magnified assessment of vocal fold (VF) vibration during microlaryngoscopy under general anesthesia. Excised larynx testing showed that the AVFD could provide useful information about the vibratory characteristics of each VF independently. The present investigation expands those findings by testing new iterations of the AVFD during microlaryngoscopy in the canine model. STUDY DESIGN: Animal model. METHODS: The AVFD is a handheld instrument that is positioned to cont

Development of laryngeal video stroboscope with laser marking module for dynamic glottis measurement.

Physicians clinically use laryngeal video stroboscope as an auxiliary instrument to test glottal diseases, and read vocal fold images and voice quality for diagnosis. As the position of vocal fold varies in each person, the proportion of the vocal fold size as presented in the vocal fold image is different, making it impossible to directly estimate relevant glottis physiological parameters, such as the length, area, perimeter, and opening angle of the glottis. Hence, this study designs an innovative laser projection marking module for the laryngeal video stroboscope to provide reference parame

Glottal space segmentation from motion estimation and Gabor filtering.

Obtaining the glottal space segmentation is essential to characterize morphological disorders of vocal folds. In this study, the tested images are been acquired by direct optical inspection of the glottis using an endoscope and most of them are very poor quality. The application of motion estimation is very useful to segment the vocal folds endoscopic videos without user interaction. This approach involves three process steps: 1) Wiener motion estimator--to shift the measurement the next frame regarding to the current frame, and look for similarities between them. The best matching will accura
