Amino acid derangements in patients with sepsis: treatment with branched chain amino acid rich infusions.

Sepsis is a major catabolic insult resulting in modifications in carbohydrate and fat energy metabolism, and leading to increased muscle breakdown and nitrogen loss. Insulin resistance, which develops in sepsis, decreases glucose utilization, but plasma insulin levels are sufficiently elevated to prevent lipolysis, resulting in a further energy deficit. The availability of fuels in sepsis is therefore limited, and the body resorts to muscle breakdown, gluconeogenesis, and amino acid oxidation for energy supply. Previous work has not defined, however, the exact alterations in amino acid metabol

Selective Recovery of Zinc from Metallurgical Waste Materials from Processing Zinc and Lead Ores.

A method for processing of metallurgical waste materials (chemically defined as sulfur-bearing zinc-ferric materials) produced by plants processing zinc ores and their concentrates is proposed. The method proposed is a combination of pyro- and hydrometallurgical treatments of the waste material. The crucial steps in the developed method include: roasting the material at 450 °C to generate sulfur dioxide (SO2), absorption of SO2 in an aqueous system to form sulfuric acid (IV), carbothermic decomposition of zinc ferrite compounds, and leaching of zinc from the roasted material using sulfuric (IV

Structural biology of plant sulfur metabolism: from assimilation to biosynthesis.

Sulfur is an essential element that must be assimilated by all organisms; however, the metabolic pathways for this task vary significantly, even among individual genera of bacteria, and especially so among eukaryotes. While all organisms require sulfurous amino acids, plants require specialized sulfur-containing metabolites, such as glucosinolates and allylsulfur compounds, for protection from herbivory and microbial infection; and the synthesis of specialized peptides (i.e., glutathione and phytochelatins) for protection against reactive oxygen species and exposure to transition metals, such

The Versatile Roles of Sulfur-Containing Biomolecules in Plant Defense-A Road to Disease Resistance.

Sulfur (S) is an essential plant macronutrient and the pivotal role of sulfur compounds in plant disease resistance has become obvious in recent decades. This review attempts to recapitulate results on the various functions of sulfur-containing defense compounds (SDCs) in plant defense responses to pathogens. These compounds include sulfur containing amino acids such as cysteine and methionine, the tripeptide glutathione, thionins and defensins, glucosinolates and phytoalexins and, last but not least, reactive sulfur species and hydrogen sulfide. SDCs play versatile roles both in pathogen perc

Changes in free amino acids and sugars in potatoes due to sulfate fertilization and the effect on acrylamide formation.

To examine how sulfur deprivation may affect acrylamide formation in cooked potatoes, three varieties of potato were grown under conditions of either severe sulfur deprivation or an adequate supply of sulfur. In all three varieties sulfur deprivation led to a decrease in acrylamide formation, even though the levels of sugars, which are acrylamide precursors, were higher in tubers of the sulfur-deprived plants. In one variety the concentration of free asparagine, the other precursor for acrylamide, was also higher. There was a very close correlation between the concentration of asparagine in th

Trichothiodystrophy: sulfur-deficient brittle hair as a marker for a neuroectodermal symptom complex.

Trichothiodystrophy, or sulfur-deficient brittle hair, is a clinical marker for a neuroectodermal symptom complex that usually features mental and physical retardation and may also include nail dystrophy, lamellar ichthyosis, ocular dysplasia, dental caries, and decreased fertility. Cystine-deficient hair is common to all patients. The hairs from two new patients were studied, and the most distinctive microscopic hair findings were striking bright and dark bands seen with polarizing microscopy using crossed polarizers. To date, all hair samples showing this banding have had an abnormally low s

Sulfur compounds: From plants to humans and their role in chronic disease prevention.

Sulfur is essential for the health of plants and is an indispensable dietary component for human health and disease prevention. Its incorporation into our food supply is heavily reliant upon the uptake of sulfur into plant tissue and our subsequent intake. Dietary requirements for sulfur are largely calculated based upon requirements for the sulfur-containing amino acids (SAA), cysteine and methionine, to meet the demands for synthesis of proteins, enzymes, co-enzymes, vitamins, and hormones. SAA are found in abundance in animal sources and are relatively low in plants. However, some plants, p

Close Interspecies Interactions between Prokaryotes from Sulfureous Environments.

Green sulfur bacteria are obligate photolithoautotrophs that require highly reducing conditions for growth and can utilize only a very limited number of carbon substrates. These bacteria thus inhabit a very narrow ecologic niche. However, several green sulfur bacteria have overcome the limits of immobility by entering into a symbiosis with motile Betaproteobacteria in a type of multicellular association termed phototrophic consortia. One of these consortia, "Chlorochromatium aggregatum," has recently been established as the first culturable model system to elucidate the molecular basis of this

Aliphatic Sulfonyl Fluoride Synthesis via Decarboxylative Fluorosulfonylation of Hypervalent Iodine(III) Carboxylates.

We disclose herein a photocatalytic decarboxylative fluorosulfonylation reaction of various hypervalent iodine(III) carboxylates in combination with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-bis(sulfur dioxide) adduct as a sulfonyl source and KHF2 as a desirable fluorine source via a radical sulfur dioxide insertion and fluorination strategy. A one-pot photocatalytic decarboxylative fluorosulfonylation reaction of various carboxylic acids mediated by PhI(OAc)2 was realized, as well. Notably, this transformation can be performed under heating conditions without the need for catalysts.

Palladium-catalyzed conversion of beta,gamma-unsaturated silyl sulfinates into (E)-alkenes: asymmetric synthesis of polypropionate fragments.

At low temperature, 1-alkoxy-1,3-dienes add to sulfur dioxide activated by a Lewis or protic acid generating zwitterionic intermediates that can be quenched by enoxysilanes. The resulting beta,gamma-unsaturated silyl sulfinates can be desilylated by 1:1 Pd(OAc)(2)/PPh(3) catalyst, liberating the corresponding beta,gamma-unsaturated sulfinic acids that undergo smooth and highly stereoselective retro-ene eliminations of sulfur dioxide. The method has been applied to generate enantiomerically pure polypropionate fragments.

Conversion mechanisms between organic sulfur and inorganic sulfur in surface sediments in coastal rivers.

Geochemical processes of sulfur (S) in river aquatic systems play a crucial role in environmental evolution. In this study, the distributions and sources of reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) and organic sulfur (OS) in coastal river surface sediments were investigated. The results indicated that OS dominated total S (80%), and OS (i.e., humic acid sulfur, HAS; fulvic acid sulfur, FAS) correlated with the availability of labile organic matter (OM) and reactive iron (Fe). Terrigenous inputs and sulfurization contributed to the enrichment of FAS through the S reduction. Autochthonous biological input

Insertion into Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Carbon-Sulfur Moieties Derived from Sulfoxonium Ylides and Elemental Sulfur.

The (3 + 2) cycloaddition of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (DACs) with carbon-sulfur 2π components has become an emerging method to rapidly assemble tetrahydrothiophenes. Starting materials donating the carbon-sulfur unit are often isolated from thionation of carbonyls or carboxylic acid derivatives. Herein we report a method for the cycloaddition of DACs with carbon-sulfur moieties presumably formed in situ via β-sulfuration of α-carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides with elemental sulfur. The insertion occurred without the assistance of Lewis acid, perhaps due to the strongly polarized carbon-sulfur-co

[Current situation and impact factors of acid deposition in main cites of Shandong Province].

Based on the monitoring data for years in Shandong Province, current situation of acid rain in every city was assessed, and the temporal distribution of the dry, wet and total sulfur deposition in Jinan and Qingdao were studied. The results showed that Qingdao which had the largest precipitation acidity was the single city whose annul average precipitation pH was below 5. 60. The precipitation acidities in the main cities of Shandong Province were in a descent tendency. The total sulfur desposition in Jinan and Qingdao was basically stable or in a descent tendency, but also reached 10 t/(km(2)

A thiotrophic microbial community in an acidic brine lake in Northern Chile.

The endorheic basins of the Northern Chilean Altiplano contain saline lakes and salt flats. Two of the salt flats, Gorbea and Ignorado, have high acidic brines. The causes of the local acidity have been attributed to the occurrence of volcanic native sulfur, the release of sulfuric acid by oxidation, and the low buffering capacity of the rocks in the area. Understanding the microbial community composition and available energy in this pristine ecosystem is relevant in determining the origin of the acidity and in supporting the rationale of conservation policies. Besides, a comparison between si

Photoinduced Decarboxylative Sulfonylation of Carboxylic Acids with Sodium Sulfinates.

We report photoinduced decarboxylative sulfonylation of carboxylic acids with sodium sulfinates for synthesizing sulfones. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, directly utilizing carboxylic acids without prefunctionalization, with copper acetate as the oxidant and sodium acetate as the base at room temperature. This method demonstrates excellent substrate compatibility, accommodating simple carboxylic acids, and drug molecules successfully converted into the corresponding sulfones. Furthermore, we developed a photoinduced two-step, one-pot protocol that integrated two carboxylic acids

Generation of sulfonated 1-isoindolinones through a multicomponent reaction with the insertion of sulfur dioxide.

A four-component reaction of 2-vinylbenzoic acids, aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, the sulfur dioxide surrogate DABCO·(SO2)2, and nitriles under photocatalysis in the presence of visible light is developed. This multicomponent reaction works efficiently, promoted by BF3·OEt2 with the insertion of sulfur dioxide under mild conditions, leading to sulfonated 1-isoindolinones in moderate to good yields. This route is highly selective, and several competitive pathways are not observed under these conditions. A possible mechanism involving photocatalysis and a Lewis acid is proposed.

Neuroprotective Roles of the Reverse Transsulfuration Pathway in Alzheimer's Disease.

The reverse transsulfuration pathway has emerged as a central hub that integrates the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids and redox homeostasis. Transsulfuration involves the transfer of sulfur from homocysteine to cysteine. Cysteine serves as the precursor for several sulfur-containing molecules, which play diverse roles in cellular processes. Recent evidence shows that disruption of the flux through the pathway has deleterious consequences. In this review article, I will discuss the actions and regulation of the reverse transsulfuration pathway and its links to other metabolic pathwa

Adsorption of SO2 on sewage sludge-derived materials.

Sewage sludge-derived materials carbonized at temperatures between 400 and 950 degrees C were used for adsorption of sulfur dioxide from dry and moist air. The materials were characterized using sorption of nitrogen and thermal analysis. The sulfur dioxide capacity was measured according to a laboratory-developed breakthrough test. It was found that the capacity of the adsorbents increases with increasing temperature of carbonization. It is likely that during carbonization at high temperatures such catalytic metals as calcium become active. They play a significant role in the SO2 removal proce

Evolution of water chemistry in natural acidic environments in Yangmingshan, Taiwan.

In Yangmingshan National Park, located in the northern part of the Taiwan Island, there is a very rare area where fish (Channa asiatica) live in spite of acid environments. The origin of the acid in local acid ponds and rivers and the evolution of the water chemistry are discussed on the basis of sulfur stable isotope ratios and chemical equilibria. One of the sources of the acid is sulfuric acid, which is derived from the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in volcanic gas gushing out from fumaroles around the area and from acid deposition supplied from Taipei City. It is also derived from the oxid
