A self-supervised language model selection strategy for biomedical question answering.

Large neural-based Pre-trained Language Models (PLM) have recently gained much attention due to their noteworthy performance in many downstream Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. PLMs can be categorized as either general-purpose, which are trained on resources such as large-scale Web corpora, and domain-specific which are trained on in-domain or mixed-domain corpora. While domain-specific PLMs have shown promising performance on domain-specific tasks, they are significantly more computationally expensive compared to general-purpose PLMs as they have to be e

Longitudinal Transcriptomic Remodeling of Adipose Tissue After Bariatric Surgery Revealed by Differential Expression and Explainable Machine Learning.

Background: Bariatric surgery improves metabolic health, but long-term transcriptomic remodeling of white adipose tissue (WAT) after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) remains incompletely defined. This study aimed to characterize longitudinal WAT gene-expression patterns after RYGB and prioritize candidate signatures of post-surgical adaptation using a publicly available dataset. Methods: We analyzed subcutaneous WAT transcriptomic data from women with obesity who underwent RYGB, with samples collected before surgery and at 2 and 5 years after surgery. Differential expression analysis was integr

Traffic Sign Recognition Evaluation for Senior Adults Using EEG Signals.

Elderly people are not likely to recognize road signs due to low cognitive ability and presbyopia. In our study, three shapes of traffic symbols (circles, squares, and triangles) which are most commonly used in road driving were used to evaluate the elderly drivers' recognition. When traffic signs are randomly shown in HUD (head-up display), subjects compare them with the symbol displayed outside of the vehicle. In this test, we conducted a Go/Nogo test and determined the differences in ERP (event-related potential) data between correct and incorrect answers of EEG signals. As a result, the wr

Machine Learning Algorithms for Classification of MALDI-TOF MS Spectra from Phylogenetically Closely Related Species Brucella melitensis, Brucella abortus and Brucella suis.

(1) Background: MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS) is the gold standard for microbial fingerprinting, however, for phylogenetically closely related species, the resolution power drops down to the genus level. In this study, we analyzed MALDI-TOF spectra from 44 strains of B. melitensis, B. suis and B. abortus to identify the optimal classification method within popular supervised and unsupervised machine learning (ML) algorithms. (2) Methods: A consensus feature selection strategy was applied to pinpoint from among the 500 MS features those that yielded the best ML model and that may play a role

A preliminary evaluation of still face images by deep learning: A potential screening test for childhood developmental disabilities.

Most developmental disorders are defined by their clinical symptoms and many disorders share common features. The main objective of this research is to evaluate still facial images as a potential screening test for childhood developmental disabilities, which is free of any biases of subjective judgments of human observers. Via supervised machine learning, a classifier of convolution neural network (CNN) was built by using 908 facial images, half of those were photos of children labeled with "autism", which may include some developmental disorders with autism-like features. Then face images wer

Neural activity during affect labeling predicts expressive writing effects on well-being: GLM and SVM approaches.

Affect labeling (putting feelings into words) is a form of incidental emotion regulation that could underpin some benefits of expressive writing (i.e. writing about negative experiences). Here, we show that neural responses during affect labeling predicted changes in psychological and physical well-being outcome measures 3 months later. Furthermore, neural activity of specific frontal regions and amygdala predicted those outcomes as a function of expressive writing. Using supervised learning (support vector machines regression), improvements in four measures of psychological and physical healt

Support vector machine classification of irritable bowel syndrome patients based on whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity features.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder characterized by signaling dysregulation between the brain and gut, leading to gastrointestinal dysfunction. Symptoms such as abdominal pain and constipation can manifest periodically or persistently, and negative emotions may exacerbate the symptoms. Previous studies have shown that the pathogenesis of IBS is closely related to the brain-gut axis and brain function, but there are still difficulties in disease diagnosis. Therefore, this study applied a machine-learning approach based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging

Using artificial intelligence to overcome over-indebtedness and fight poverty.

This research examines how artificial intelligence may contribute to better understanding and to overcome over-indebtedness in contexts of high poverty risk. This research uses Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) in a field database of 1654 over-indebted households to identify distinguishable clusters and to predict its risk factors. First, unsupervised machine learning using Self-Organizing Maps generated three over-indebtedness clusters: low-income (31.27%), low credit control (37.40%), and crisis-affected households (31.33%). Second, supervised machine learning with exhaustive grid search h

Learning from Limited phenotype-level annotations for promoting multiple instance learning in endoscopic helicobacter pylori infection diagnosis.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a major risk factor for gastric carcinogenesis, requiring holistic endoscopic assessment of distributed mucosal abnormalities. While patient-level diagnostic labels are accessible, obtaining large-scale fine-grained annotations is constrained due to high inter-observer variability and the labor-intensive nature of the process. This naturally formulates the task as a multiple instance learning (MIL) problem. Existing image-level approaches often rely on noisy supervisory signals without modeling sequence context, while standard embedding-based MIL me

Weakly supervised artificial intelligence for multi-cancer detection of lymph node metastasis on whole slide images.

The accurate identification of lymph node metastasis is critical for cancer diagnosis/treatment but remains time-consuming and error-prone for pathologists. We develop MambaMIL+HiLA-MIL, a multiple instance learning model combining Vision Mamba with high-low attention separation mechanism. This model is compared against six baselines under four feature extractors (ResNet, UNI, Virchow, and GigaPath). Ten-fold cross-validation is employed for model evaluation. Our model significantly outperforms all baselines. It exhibits strong performance in detection of isolated tumor cells and micro-metasta

Extraction of Novel Features and Diagnosis Prediction in Myelodysplastic Neoplasm Using a Weakly Supervised Artificial Intelligence Model Based on Normal Megakaryocytes.

Evaluation of bone marrow pathology can be challenging for nonspecialist pathologists due to its morphological complexities. Despite advances in artificial intelligence for other organ systems, research in bone marrow biopsy field remains limited. This study presents an artificial intelligence model developed to classify myeloid diseases based on morphologically normal megakaryocytes in hematoxylin-eosin-stained bone marrow biopsy specimens. The model integrates two deep learning components: one for detecting bone marrow regions, and the other for identifying megakaryocytes, along with an XGBo

Multi-Label Chest X-Ray Image Classification With Single Positive Labels.

Deep learning approaches for multi-label Chest X-ray (CXR) images classification usually require large-scale datasets. However, acquiring such datasets with full annotations is costly, time-consuming, and prone to noisy labels. Therefore, we introduce a weakly supervised learning problem called Single Positive Multi-label Learning (SPML) into CXR images classification (abbreviated as SPML-CXR), in which only one positive label is annotated per image. A simple solution to SPML-CXR problem is to assume that all the unannotated pathological labels are negative, however, it might introduce false n

Revisiting the dynamic risk profile of cardiovascular/non-cardiovascular multimorbidity in incident atrial fibrillation patients and five cardiovascular/non-cardiovascular outcomes: A machine-learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) usually have a heterogeneous co-morbid history, with dynamic changes in risk factors impacting on multiple adverse outcomes. We investigated a large prospective cohort of patients with multimorbidity, using a machine-learning approach, accounting for the dynamic nature of comorbidity risks and incident AF. METHODS: Using machine-learning, we studied a prospective US cohort using medical/pharmacy databases of 1 091 911 patients, with an incident AF cohort of 14 078 and non-AF cohort of 1 077 833 enrolled in the 4-year study. Diagnosis of Sacroiliitis Through Semi-Supervised Segmentation and Radiomics Feature Analysis of MRI Images.

BACKGROUND: Sacroiliitis is a hallmark of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and early detection plays an important role in managing the condition effectively. MRI is commonly used for diagnosing sacroiliitis, traditional methods often depend on subjective interpretation or limited automation which can introduce variability in diagnoses. The integration of semi-supervised segmentation and radiomics features may reduce reliance on expert interpretation and the need for large annotated datasets, potentially enhancing diagnostic workflows. PURPOSE: To develop a diagnostic model for sacroiliitis and bo

Machine learning based models for prediction of subtype diagnosis of primary aldosteronism using blood test.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases, especially in unilateral subtype. Despite its high prevalence, the case detection rate of PA is limited, partly because of no clinical models available in general practice to identify patients highly suspicious of unilateral subtype of PA, who should be referred to specialized centers. The aim of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to develop a predictive model for subtype diagnosis of PA based on machine learning methods using clinical data available in general practice. Overall, 91 patients

Self-Supervised Learning for Intuitive Control of Prosthetic Hand Movements via Sonomyography.

As a primary effector of humans, the hand plays a crucial role in many aspects of daily life. Recognizing multidegree-of-freedom hand movements from muscle activity helps infer human motion intentions. Solving this problem has direct applications in prosthetic and exoskeleton control. Here, we propose a self-supervised learning algorithm inspired by muscle synergies to achieve simultaneous estimation of wrist rotation (supination/pronation) and hand grasp (open/close) from sonomyography-the muscle deformation detected by a wearable ultrasound array. Unlike conventional methods collecting both

A new weakly supervised deep neural network for recognizing Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that mainly affects older adults, causing memory loss and decline in thinking skills. In recent years, many traditional machine learning and deep learning methods have been used to assist in the diagnosis of AD, and most existing methods focus on early prediction of disease on a supervised basis. In reality, there is a massive amount of medical data available. However, some of those data have problems with the low-quality or lack of labels, and the cost of labeling them will be too high. To solve above problem, a new Weakly Superv

Adaptive feature fusion based semi-supervised federated learning system for ECG arrhythmia detection.

Automatic cardiac arrhythmia detection using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals is essential for early diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions. Most of the previously existing systems for arrhythmia detection depend on fully supervised learning approaches. In addition to that, since the ECG patient data is centrally stored, it can raise concerns like privacy and security in healthcare environments. To address these issues, this work explores a semi-supervised federated learning framework that detects arrhythmia using ECG signals. The MIT-BIH Arrhythmia dataset is used from which the heartbeat segm
