Bedside screening of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae using selective agar plates: A low-cost, laboratory-independent approach for rural healthcare facilities.

The global surge of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) poses a critical threat to patient safety in intensive care units (ICUs). In low- and middle-income countries, routine CRE surveillance is often limited by the lack of microbiology laboratory infrastructure and trained personnel in peripheral healthcare facilities, resulting in reliance on empirical broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and limited capacity to detect silent transmission. This study evaluated the operational feasibility, safety, and phenotypic agreement of a decentralized, laboratory-independent bedside CRE screening

Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Affects Younger People, Too.

Synopsis Although osteoarthritis (OA) has traditionally been considered a disease of older age, hip and knee OA can and does affect younger adults, with a profound impact on psychosocial well-being and work capacity. Obesity and a history of traumatic knee injury (eg, anterior cruciate ligament rupture and/or meniscal tear) are key risk factors for the accelerated development of knee OA, while structural hip deformities (including those contributing to femoroacetabular impingement syndrome) are strong predictors of early-onset hip OA. In view of these associations, rising rates of obesity and

Overview, Control Strategies, and Lessons Learned in the CDC Response to the 2014-2016 Ebola Epidemic.

During 2014-2016, CDC, working with U.S. and international partners, mounted a concerted response to end the unprecedented epidemic of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in West Africa. CDC's response, which was the largest in the agency's history, was directed simultaneously at controlling the epidemic in West Africa and strengthening preparedness for Ebola in the United States. Although experience in responding to approximately 20 Ebola outbreaks since 1976 had provided CDC and other international responders an understanding of the disease and how to stop its spread, the epidemic in West Africa pre

How COVID-19 Changed Our Management of Nasal Bone Fractures and Its Impact on Patient Outcomes-A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal bone fractures are a common presentation to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon. Simple, closed fractures are assessed and considered for closed manipulation under anesthesia (MUA #nasal bones). Most departments perform this under general anesthesia (GA). Our protocol changed in the face of COVID-19, where procedures were alternatively performed under local anesthesia (LA) in the clinic, to cope with lack of elective theater capacity during the pandemic, while still allowing a nasal fracture service to take place. We present postoperative patient outcomes on breathing and

Virtual Wards for Acute Care Patients: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Increasing capacity pressures and overcrowding in hospitals and emergency departments (EDs) have led to a global surge in the adoption of technology-enabled hospital-at-home programs, also known as virtual wards (VWs). These models provide hospital-level care in patients' homes supported by remote monitoring, aiming to shorten or avoid hospital admission. While substantial evidence supports the feasibility of VWs for chronic care, evidence for use in patients with acute conditions remains limited. This scoping review aimed to map existing evidence on VWs for acute medical patients

Sex-specific responses to repeated dose of abamectin in albino rats: a focus on cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and pro-inflammatory signaling.

Abamectin (AB) is a widely used biopesticide in agricultural and public health applications, and its extensive use has heightened the risk of environmental contamination. Although sex is a critical factor influencing toxicant susceptibility, the mechanisms underlying AB toxicity, particularly the role of sex-related differences, remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the toxicological outcomes of repeated oral exposure to AB (1 mg/kg body weight; 1/10 LD50) for 28 days in male and female Wister albino rats, with an emphasis on sex-dependent responses.
